Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out new videos every week! We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

We have someone in our neighborhood who feeds the squirrels peanuts. Well, guess what? They bury them in our planting containers on our front porch. It took a long time to figure out a hy we were seeing them out there, but when we started to plant the containers, we found them growing.

We have 2-2 1/2 weeks of rain in our forecast right now 🤪 we have raised beds also. In the last 30+ years our garden has became a hodgepodge of raised beds with landscaping fabric under half of them not very pretty but it works. Your garden is beautiful 🤩

Nasturtiums would look great cascading off the ends of those planters, and would give you salad fixings all summer. Can't say for sure this is why, but I have had no tomato worms the past couple of years when I've planted nasturtiums and marigolds.

I`m surprised that more food isn`t being grown on trellises. It seems to me that standing up in the garden is more practical to get the work done. Harvesting is the hardest part. That is probably why more people are doing raised beds.

I am going to grow courgettes vertically this year, planted in an old wheelbarrow with rust holes in it, placed next to a trellis 😂. Seeds were planted this week indoors as our last frost date is 31st May.

I really appreciate how well you to work together. Especially how you take turns presenting the material., rarely interrupt each other or talk over one another. It seems so natural too. I watched another channel where this wasn’t the case. The disc courtesy was so distracting and disturbing to me that I discontinued watching their channel. You two are great together. Well I’m sure things aren’t perfect all the time, you genuinely seem very happy together. Very inspiring. May the Lord continue to bless you. 🌻

    A TIP.....
If magnets will stick to your raised beds, you can use tulle or row cover to protect plants from insects or sun. Just make a frame to hold up the tent part and place the fabric on tightly, then hold down the loose ends with the super strong magnets that you can purchase at any big box store. It holds the thin fabric down even against strong winds. NO DRILLING HOLES! 😀😃😄

I am about to buy some sheet metal. 12ft long. Each one cost $39 If you split it long ways it should make one 8ft by 4 ft bed, 1 ft tall. I suspect thats 25% of the cost of these maybe 15%. Yes Im cheap and there will be some edges you have to watch out for but If you are frugal I think the sheet metal is the way to go. Im getting the kind that is flat with only 4 Vs per sheet. Not the corrigated.

If you haven't tried them sun sugar are awesome bite-size tomatoes. My little grandsons strip my Vines every time they come over. And the peanuts just brought back a good memory. One year I had a mystery plant in one of my raised beds and I let it grow and at the end of the summer I just pulled it out to throw it away assuming it was a weed and lo and behold I had peanuts in the ground. A blessing plant from my squirrels😊

Thank you for my 117-63-66 BP this morning! In my eighth decade, it's such a pleasure to tell my Dr. "Nope, not taking BP meds."
    Couple of things.
My minds eye sees "Calendar Picture" garden this year. Next level beautiful. Can't wait!
Also, with 25 year preservation from freeze drying, please share your long term menus you have planned. For instance, this year you have dill. That's about 5 years worth per plant. Oregano next year? You're inventory of preserves must dictate some of next seasons needs. With fruit jars one, you can see what you're running low on and two, they don't last 25 years.
It strikes me you've changed that game quite a bit. I'm interested in your new logistics.
Thanks again, y'all are a blessing.

Years ago, my parents planted Kentucky Wonder beans in part of the corn field. They got so loaded with beans they were starting to bend the corn stalks over. If I remember right, they picked seven bushels of beans that year. That made for a lot of canning. I don't think they ever raised them again.

The 3rd squash you planted, white ones, we called them button squash. My husband, Bill, grandparents and parents used to grow the button squash. My husband loved them. My mother-in-law lightly floured them then fried them until crisp and served with some salt. This was back in 1950, 1960, and 1970. Good Luck. Love your videos…….

We have our tomatoes in wicking tubs. So we built a trellis out of cattle panels. Then we bought a 40% shade cloth from growers solution to drape over it. Saved my tomatoes from the heat.
They thrived. Those trellises are a life saver.

She diced & parboiled them in a little water & evaporated milk, then seasoned with butter, salt & a little pepper. So yummy! She said that was the way her mother cooked them when she was little growing up in rural Kansas, my dad said the same thing growing up farming in Indiana.

We had to switch to raised bed gardens about 7 years ago. I love it and my back loves it too! Fun to see your garden coming to life. ❤️😊

I loved this video so much!! I have raised beds and I crowd mine with companion plants, lol. I want to use every bit of growing area that I can because they are the only space I have to grow a garden. Your raised bed garden is so very beautiful. We have installed a few cattle panels for beans, cucumbers, and sugar baby watermelons. They are great to throw shade cloth on too. I love the idea for cherry tomatoes!!! I have been praying for your family members and both of you. My husband had a quadruple heart bypass in August 2019, he was back to work in October full time, God is a healing God! Thanks for the update on what you have planted so far, looking great and so exciting! God bless you both! ❤

Now that you are growing in raised beds, rather than in the ground, you might want to try adding some beneficial herbs and dwarf flowers to most of the beds. I find that my raised beds do better when I do that. It attracts the right kinds of insects, and keeps my soil cooler having more foliage covering the soil, but I am in a hot dry climate. Perhaps, it's different in your area. I can't wait to see your garden results. I've learned so much from you both over the last several years.
Prayers for your father, and God bless you both!🙏🙏

So exicited for you! I'm a little behind this year. My tomatoes germinated, but I didn't get them off the heat mats and the covers off in time, and they fizzled out. I decided to give them another shot. They are doing well, but I'll be a few weeks behind in planting. I'll buy a slicer and cherry start or 2 from the nursery so my husband doesn't have to wait too long for tomatoes.
Meanwhile, I'm hardening off my other starts to plant at the end of the week. This is such a fun and exciting time for gardeners.

I tried peanuts a couple of years ago here in IL. It was a fun project. I only harvested a coffee can full but may try again.

We have 2 tall beds 32" or 34", I don't remember now. In those beds we have asparagus, deep planted roots (12") and strawberries, shallow planted roots (get no deeper than 12"). They are growing so well in the same bed together! The first asparagus to come up are allowed to go to fern and provide some shade from the very hot summer E TN sun for the strawberries, which work well as a ground cover for the soil. I tell you, 2 perennial crops in the same bed, 4'X4' is absolutely amazing. The taller beds were a little more expensive but, absolutely worth it in the long run. 2 beds planted out needing very little attention year after year with almost guaranteed harvests - let's face it, nothing is 100%. We use the other high bed for other root harvests, potatoes, ginger, sun choke, turmeric, etc.) Also, I plant carrots on the edge under the beans, cucumber and tomato trellises. The leaves make a perfect shade garden. We've actually had lettuces and herbs last through most of the summer in those areas as well.

Oh!!! You should plant some herbs in the second planter on the sides! I can never plant enough herbs! They are fun to grow and I share them with family and friends! If I have too much, I share them with whoever wants them for free! I just put them in the front yard, in cleaned milk gallon containers that I cut the tops off, filled with water and they go very quickly! It’s just makes me really happy to share my extras! You have a beautiful garden! I absolutely love the hoop trellises!!! You both did an awesome job!

You will love the pole beans! They seemed to take forever before putting on beans, but when they did, there were clusters of beans, and just on our 8 foot trellis, we picked a 5 gallon bucket full! They are delicious fresh or canned.

We grew Heavy Hitter okra last year. It was more of a bush and we got tons! The “tree” was only about 5 feet tall. We got the seeds from Baker Creek.

You will enjoy growing plants in your raised beds. Last year, I only grew dwarf tomatoes, 6 varieties. One variety was Geranium Kiss. The tomato plant grew about 4 feet tall. There are a lot of tomatoes in a cluster. I found the flavor to be so-so, as were most of the dwarf tomato flavors. The yellow and dark purple tomatoes had the best flavors. The tomatoes have a pointy end, which I didn't like when eating them. I didn't grow them again this year. This year, I am only growing indeterminate tomatoes, 11 varieties, in potato grow bags that are 16" tall by 14" wide. The tomatoes are dark purple, yellow, red and orange and are cherry, grape and small slicers. I'm growing your favorite, Juliet.
I'm growing yellow patty pan squash for the 1st time in 7 gallon grow bags, Sunburst variety. Planted 3 seeds, all germinated. Interestingly, 2 plants are producing yellow patty pans, and 1 plant is producing only green patty pans even though they are supposed to be yellow. Must be the hybrid factor. Have harvested 1 squash so far. It was tasty. Is best to harvest the squash when about 4 inches wide. If larger, I've read the flavor isn't as good and they become tougher. I put insect covers with zippers/drawstrings over the squash plants to keep out vine borer moths. Because of the covers, I have to pollinate the female flowers by hand, which is fun and interesting. Seem to be getting more male flowers than female flowers though, and they don't always open at the same time.
Prayers for your dad's heart surgery. 🙏🙏🙏 My husband had open heart surgery 2 years ago, aortic valve replacement and one bypass. Recovery took a while but he's doing very well now. It is amazing the medical advances available for heart surgery. God blessed us with a great surgical doctor, and the cardiac ICU team was superb in the hospital. God bless.
