Completely agree Mark. Managed to blend the comedy and the horrific elements very well, and the two lead performance were as you said very good. Would definitely recommend this film.

I hope Mark reviews Boots Riley's Sorry to Bother You. It'd be interesting to see what he makes of the pieces seen side by side as approaches to similar problems but through very different lenses.

Just got back from a viewing of Blackkklansman and found it incredibly powerful. The whole audience stayed for a few minutes into the credits almost processing what they had just seen. So glad Mark found it as enjoyable and horrifying as I did.

Did anyone else have a slight moment of panic when the theme for another Spike Lee movie played near the end of the film? I honestly thought that it was going to transition into announcing a sequel for that movie, Split style. The Spike Lee Cinematic Universe

It had a great opening with Alec Baldwin and a ridiculously powerful ending starting with the pull down the hall to the cross burning leading into modern news footage also the true story told by the old man was gut wrenching but i thought everything else was was a bit disjointed and relied more on style over substance.

Thought it was a good film, well shot, great period detail and quite emotionally resonant at points. I'm not gonna pretend it didn't have problems though, the script is quite clunky, quite a lot of unnatural lines that pulled me out of the moment. It's been criticized as well for portraying a simplified version of race relations, especially in regard to the police and I've got to be honest, the film falls down at this hurdle. There is one nasty, overtly racist cop while every other cop oscilates between ambivalent and on side, only Adam Drivers character has an arc in this regard.
There is one quite comical moment where a previously disinterested cop becomes an expert on race relations all so he can deliver a painful fourth wall break regarding Trump. It's not that this couldn't of worked but it's delivered quite terribly, with no set up regarding the cop who says the line.
    Overall I'd give it a 7/10.

It started off quite slow for me, but after the first 30 mins I was sold. The highly disturbing subject matter and the sometimes light-hearted comedy work incredibly well. The performances were incredible from absolutely everyone involved. Every character is written with great attention to detail. The overall production doesn't beat you over the head with the fact it's set in the 70s, but at the same time it gives the period the respect it deserves. It feels so much like a film made in the 70s, for the 70s.
I never liked Spike Lee. Always thought we was another Hollywood hack. But this has completely changed my perception of him.
Highly enjoyable film, would recommend it to just about everyone.

The ending was a little bit uneven. It seemed like there were another 20-30 minutes of film but the studio told Lee that he had to cut it down to 10 minutes. There was the finale, then the congratulations at the police station, then the announcement of funding cuts, then the scene when they make fun of the clan leader, then the scene with Stallworth and his girlfriend at home and then the real scenes of racist protests in 2017.

Am I the only person who thought this movie was terrible? It went on and on for so long, there are so many ridiculous moments in it (why does the guy sit at the dinner when he has clearly been made). The movie also couldn't decide if it wanted to be an action movie or a documentary (i honestly wish it had just been a documentary). I couldnt stand it.

BBC world service broadcast a doc about this about a year ago. I shared it with friends at the time as a fascinating listen. I didn't know Lee was then in the process of adapting the story but listened to it again with a friend before going to see the film. Both of us found the comedy in the film fell flat; we agreed it was good but think the radio show was far more revelatory.

BlacKkKlansman (5 out of 10, 44th out of 80 films viewed year-to-date) starts hilariously, but is over a half-hour too long and ultimately tries too hard to make an anti-Trump statement - more to the point, it does so ineffectively. The acting overall is very strong, the soundtrack is good and it looks great, but there are massive plausibility issues, particularly towards the end. Would be interested to hear from those who have seen both this and 3 Billboards, as I think people's personal opinion of both will be the same. Overall Verdict : OK Check out Damo's No-Nonsense Film Reviews page on FaceBook for more no-nonsense reviews. My verdicts and those of MK normally are closely aligned but he's definitely a couple of points higher on this one.

Eh.... It's got good moments but I found it pretty poorly edited, massively disjointed at times and seemed like a bunch of scenes stuck together rather than a fluid piece. Some solid performances by the two lead actors and strangely enough, Ryan Eggold who I think is going to be huge. Misses many beats but still entertaining enough whilst completely unapologetically socking it to the Trump administration, which is a major plus point imo.

This movie had issues and the Academy was wiling to look over it. And so was Mark Kermode. It is not wrong to criticize the movie, that does not mean you don't support the message that racism is a problem.

Felt this film drifted quite often...solid but nothing special. In the cinema I was in I counted 6 who left before the end and I could totally understand that as the whole thing felt a little "nnneee"...it ended up not being one thing or another...surprisingly the KKK members were more interesting characters with the black and other anti-racists too much of a cliché. 3 star at best

  • @rosbiffy
    @rosbiffy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I had heard so many good things about this film. Unfortunately it's thoroughly mediocre. Telegraphed scenes, tonally inconsistent, clunky dialogue and lacklustre performances. The KKK play as buffoonish cartoon villains and there's absolutely no sense of jeopardy. The use of news footage from Charlottesville was utterly gratuitous. A complete misfire.

Spike Lee directed this mess of a movie? It's poorly directed, edited, casted and politically biased. It's a political hit piece. It's propaganda, doesn't matter if you agree with it or not. Disguising that as a movie is just plain wrong and misleading.
