    When you watch this... There is a real sense of history being made. Yes they could've edited it, yes they could've shown the real response. But, I was so young when I saw this and now as an adult watching it, I think... Ted Coppel was probably admiring the answer. He's a newsman used to getting talking point answers. Then Mandela comes in and calls him out. This video is an education is journalism. Are you a journalist or a " talking head"? Can you imagine what he saw in that jail for nearly 30 years of his life? Ted tries to redeem himself, but I truly believe he was looking at someone that made him change. You know it happens to all of us. People say we don't change. We're always changing and learning. The media just doesn't want you to know that. When you meet people in your life that make you think... Don't you always remember them?

    • @mikehaliday8302
      @mikehaliday8302  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think it was mostly the result of a misunderstanding. Mandela's argument was on a trajectory that to his mind had been completed but this was not externally evident to Koppel. I can understand Koppel waiting for Mandela's continued argument and then suddenly finding himself accused of being paralyzed. The greatness lies in the moment when Mandela, believing he has skewered his opponent, reaches out and shakes Koppel's hand, re-leveling the playing field.

    • @glutamin111
      @glutamin111 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      I also think Koppel was expecting him to continue talking, but at the same time he knew Mandela was making a valid point with exposing the double standard so he was confused...Mandela's sharp mind and authentic personality exposed very much any pretence that night...i don't know if these people underestimated his intelligence but i'm guessing afterwards some of them wished they hadn't asked anything.
      I know i'd never underestimate a man who went through so much in his life fighting for the principles he believed in. Obviously he was going to be sharp on these topics, what else could they expect? he had given these issues more thought and consideration then other people.

    • @boriskarloff3270

      Kopel line of questioning got into Mandela's nerves. Mandela had to clarify and demanded that Kopel be consistent in his line of questioning. Behind that smile, Mandela was agitated.

    Since this isn't live, we really don't know how long Ted's pause lasted. It could have been edited to shorten the duration. The look on his face is priceless however and Mandela's smile shows a great sense of satisfaction.

    i agree with what mandela was trying to say but i must say interviews and debates in front of crowds can be almost useless because the crowd changes the dynamic--this was always my problem with shows like the daily show and bill maher. a person can lose his confidence and completely fold because of that and another person can appear genius and exalted for the same reason. the points that get the most applause seem the most accurate and many of those watching cannot judge them objectively.

    Whats so funny? Mandela was doing the talking. Koppel was waiting and thinking. Not paralyzed. Just who was in the crowd doing all the clapping? Koppel cannot come out of this for various reasons. Remember, Mandela does not like the US, no matter what he says.

    • @waldensiansylph4869
      @waldensiansylph4869 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Then why did Koppel still not have a response? "My point was- uh...." -Koppel. Still paralyzed.
      Mandela is incredibly wise. I've got to read and listen to more of his works now. He isn't just a man of knowledge. Shrewd wisdom exudes from this great man.
      But Mandela's handshake showed such magnanimity, you can tell he won Koppel after that.

    • @mikehaliday8302
      @mikehaliday8302  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the "paralysis" was accidental and mostly a misunderstanding on Koppel's part that Mandela was still talking. The greatness of the moment lies in Mandela's response when, believing he had skewered Koppel, he reaches out to shake his hand and relevel the playing field.

    I am Afrikan and I love my brother Mandela. but I think that if you watch and listen to the entire interview, you find some contradictions. in this clip he refused to be drawn in the internal affairs of other nations but then in another clip he was asked on the question of human rights and relationship with Ghadaffi of Libya, fidel Castro of Cuba and Yesa Alffat, and he responded that his relationship to the above leaders solely depended on their stand against apartheid and their involvement in struggle in formal of providing resources. Here is the contradiction, so it was OK that others involved in his internal affairs but it is wrong for him to get involved in people's internal affairs?

      Galabuzi MUWABUZI well who brought apartheid to s.a. who took the land? call it what you want? but not contradiction the USA europe was bullying nations through imperialism all over the world to accept there own standards. I'm not going to make any statements about race but at the time nations are born instability is always going to be there along with insecurity and anyways if ghadaffi peace be upon him and all these nations supported him you need to see why at this period identity of a people was a big issue and that was taken away from african people along with african history. it's immature for one to say there's a contradiction based on human rights if you want a good example why don't you look what's happening to USA right now to their citizens now and before in time.

      Galabuzi MUWABUZI I don't mean to insult or cause conflict with you but I wish to bring about understanding that though the leaders you have mentioned have 'records' they offered Mandela the kind of help that's not based on an economic deal but based on the struggle of getting it's people out of chaos and no other leaders offered that help.

      I can see where you come from but Mandela was speaking for himself and knew where the question was going. The intention was to drive a wedge between him and his allies.

      Rori Rory it's a a show of strength intelligence and wisdom he captured the audience attention because of how he answered plus politics is and always will be a difficult and dangerous game one thing I can say Mandela had was foresight.

    Koppel has stated many times that it was just a misunderstanding as to whose turn it was to speak. "I expect you to be consistent" and then looking away from Koppel. Mandela must take a bit of the blame for the misunderstanding.

      I've always understood it to be a misunderstanding, too. The greatness lies in Mandela, having apparently skewered his opponent to the laughter of the crowd, accepts Kopel's response with a smile and a handshake, deliberately re-leveling the playing field.

      He asked a very relevant question to which Koppel failed to answer because the answer to that question is controversial... He keeps going back to Fidel Castro and Muammar Gaddafi as well as Yasir Arafat.
      He didn't make a point but Koppel did by not answering him. Koppel was baffled as he was not prepared to be served with such a question.
      This was not an interview as such so he should have come prepared for the clap back questions.

    The sad part about this for Ted is that he was basically used as the whipping boy for all the questions designed to try to undermine and intimidate Nelson. Obviously one can see that he failed miserably.

    Nelson knew he was going to sit with the racist people and Koppel didn't know dealing with people like himself is what Nelson is been doing his whole life. watching this in 2020 and after 30 years the burn is still there.
