  • Virtuoso, inventive and moving, but also capricious to the point of recklessness. This is how you could describe this Toccata in D minor for harpsichord, performed here by Siebe Henstra for All of Bach. Although no autograph has survived, the work must have been composed shortly after Bach’s return from a journey to Lübeck. He had heard the famous Buxtehude playing there and was so impressed that he stayed longer than the couple of weeks’ leave his employer had given him. So on his return at the beginning of 1706, he got a severe reprimand from the church council in Arnstadt.
When listening to this harpsichord toccata, however, one thing is crystal clear. These reprimands certainly did nothing to diminish Bach’s tendency to seek out the limits of his musical possibilities and those of his audiences. On the contrary, he gives free rein to his inspiration for over twelve minutes. An increasingly adventurous prelude gives rise to two ingenious fugues, which he interrupts with a languorous adagio.

    Bravo. That was great.
Almost 250 years after the trip to Lübeck, at the very first International Bach Competition in Leipzig in 1950, Shostakovich (as member of the jury) was inspired by Tatyana Nikolayeva's interpretation of _das wohltemperierte Klavier_ - which gave way to an intimate friendship and 24 preludes and fugues, op.87, premiered by Nikolayeva in 1952. From Buxtehude to Tatyana Petrovna. Just saying.
    Smiling and waving from Istanbul.

I knew it was reminiscent of Buxtehude within the first minute, but not how directly so. Leave it to Bach to seamlessly adopt a great master's style while also making it a tour de force of his supreme gifting. SDG, bravo NBS.

Bravo, Maestro! That was a really commanding performance of a really exciting work - an interpretation to learn from as well as to enjoy. (I've been playing that piece for nearly sixty years, as a mere amateur, but found I was being shown ways to bring out more depth of meaning within the first few bars.) Thank you - as always!

This harpsichorda has a Regal/Nasard stop or don't, I almost thought it when I heard?
You from Bach Society should try use a German harpsichord with a Regal/Nasard stop, because the sound is brilliant and full, very acute, I lile it, as you can see when you listen the CDs from Geneviève Solly for Graupner: album II has several uses of Nasard/Regal stop.
