    just finished watching like 8 other reviews of the cintiq 22 and a handful of xp pen tablets and this is by far the most down to earth, average user perspective I found. Really good, useful human review. I can always look up things like hardware specs and features but seeing them all in the hands of a normal person and your impressions was hugely helpful, thank you!

    I hope you become internet famous! Enjoyed your blunt review! Not anyone would dare buy multiple tablets simultaneously and review them just to upgrade. I knew Wacom are so overpriced, and since I'm not rich, I'd be contented with saving up a Wacom One Pen Display with the Remote. I've seen lots of negative reviews from Huion and XP-Pen tablets, not denying that they have happy customers as well, but I wouldn't take the risk buying a less durable tablet with hard earned money. At least with Wacom, I know their drivers are stable, last longer and have less chances of busting up.

      i had paid about 110$ for a medium size tablet of Huion, it's f*cked up at the 5th month that i used it. Lmao, Its pen was terrible and it couldn't connect with any drawing apps that i downloaded after nearly a year i bought it. From that day, i've never buy any stuffs of Huion anymore lol i switch to wacom with a small size and it still work pretty well 'til now. So i would reccomend every one like a starter drawing/artist, choose the one although it's overprice but it can stay with you like 5 or maybe 8 years somehow idk, it worths for that price

    This video and your reviewing style are so much better than pretty much every other video I've seen reviewing Graphics Tablets, and I have watched a lot. Other reviewers seem to overly bloat the review and the message they are trying to get across gets more and more blurred. This video felt very straightforward, genuine, and factual to the everyday person wanting to do digital art. It was perfect and helped me make up my mind on which tablet to get, and I was very close to getting the Wacom 22 prior to this video and will now be going XP Pen. Thank you!

      I agree with this comment or, I went through a similar cycle as you Taylor, started with a drawing pad, then xp pen pro display, and then a refurb Wacom 32and refurb ergo stand. I love the Wacom,it was speedy but no regrets except for not doing it sooner, but if I had I would not have seen the refurb section on wacoms site. The refurb price is what pushed me over the deciding point. I saved almost a grand by going refurb and I got it in 3days from waycom standard free shipping, so far themultitouch has been amazing for things other then drawing and sculpting, my kid loves it, the express remote I thought was junk but I really like it for zbrush and other apps, I stil, use the keyboard, but for cruising and certain phases of my creation the remote adds a nice balance to working on the screen. I have been in heaven. my xp pen now sits, its a smaller backup travel friendly screen, wish it had the multitouch like the Wacom. great video!! like the comment or said not a lot of really truly informative videos on this topic.

      @@ChangeHere Thanks so much! I'm so glad you found this helpful. Was the refurbished Wacom basically the same as a new one? I saw that on the site, and it seemed like a great way to save money but I was a little nervous because you never know what you might end up with. It sounds like you're getting a lot of really good use out of it, so it was definitely the right purchase!

    While going down the rabbit hole of reviewers, I started to lose track of what was what and it was honestly stressful. I'm starting school for animation this fall and was leaning towards the Cintiq 22 but it clearly isn't worth it. Now the question is whether or not I'm willing to sink thousands of dollars into a tablet that will no doubt last me a long ass time or one that will most likely last until my graduating year.

Best of both worlds! Good luck 😁

    Appreciate the honesty, especially from an amateur artist perspective. The cintiq pro is so expensive because they surely don't sell a lot of them, and it's pretty much king of the hill technology. Their lower tier tablets being somewhat garbage is them getting some profit off that name - they've always done that but only recently have other companies stepped in and filled that void.
    From a professional artist's perspective, that $2k price tag of the pro is not an issue, that extra $900 you complain about burning is pretty much canceled out in a few weeks of work. I've had my last cintiq for 8 years, so if the new ones last even half that long and are still better than the competition, I'm not really worried about the price tag.

    • @TaylorStine
      @TaylorStine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      This is a great point, I love this perspective. If you're converting your art into money, that $900 is well worth the price. If you're a professional you're in that category of people where those slight differences can make a huge impact on your output. I'd love to be there someday 😁.

    • @HipposHateWater
      @HipposHateWater 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Exactly. I love my Wacoms, but I don't recommend any of the non-Pro Wacom lineup anymore: there's just no reason for it. Huion and XP-PEN are the new kings of that, and boy do they do it well for cheaper. As someone who first started around 2007, I'm so glad the days when Wacom was the only choice for art tablets are gone.

    • @iKickBullies
      @iKickBullies 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HipposHateWater Yup, I actually just ordered the Pro 24 the other day and it's definitely nothing I'd recommend to anyone. BUT if you're making a career out of your Art and tablet, I think you should be thinking of it as an investment and not something you bought. You should be generally okay paying more for quality. I 100 percent agree with his perspective too. My main factor in choosing it over the others was the 4K and the feel. Other tablets are finally getting the 4k and are actually getting to be not too far off in price so at that point I'll stick with Wacom lol

    Great reviews! I just would like to add my experience from December of just last year. My wife dropped a huge amount of coin on a brand new Cintiq 24 Pro because she knew I had always coveted one for years. Just wanted to report that it was a big wake up call. What a piece of garbage. Oh yeah,..it felt great with the Matte screen but immediately it was plagued with QC issues. I think many do not realize that Cintiqs are also made in China. The screen was not sealed properly at the upper right corner where the controls are and it would stick and randomly turn touch on and off etc. I would have to press really hard about 10 times before it would recognize any input. It was, to be blunt, an embarrassment as well as a big disappointment. I MEAN you could SEE the separation between the glass and the screen. I could push it down and it would stick for about 3 minutes and then pop out again. GREAT workmanship Wacom! NICE for $2500. Are you kidding me?
    I returned it and I have decided against purchasing ANY type of replacement.; ESPECIALLY another Wacom product. So as I approach a full year in December of 2021, I still have no desire to own a Wacom product. It was a hassle boxing that piece of nonsense back up and I'm stuck with an overpriced Wacom Display arm that cannot be used for anything else. That alone cost my wife over $300. What a rip off. At least she got her $2500 back.
    I'm sharing this to say that do NOT fall for the hype that the Wacom worshippers try to dish out. At the end of the day,..it is just a device like all of the others. It can be defective and it can break and have issues just like any other piece of tech out there today.
    You may get lucky and get a great one or you may not. That's all I'm saying. It's not a guarantee either way. These are made in the same places that most tech is made and so you get what you get. If I decide to buy any of these things,...I would likely just grab a 4K XP Pen or Huion. If it lasts 3-5 years, that's fine because at the pace technology advances, there will likely be something better out there anyway.

    • @TaylorStine
      @TaylorStine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Oh geez really?!? Ugh, that is so annoying! Those keys in the upper right aren't something I mentioned in the review because I didn't really think about them, but now that I've used them more they drive me nuts-- I'm always accidentally pressing them and I almost never want to. It's funny you bring up the stand, my neck has been hurting lately so I went to look at a stand and I realized I the Cintiq pro isn't VESA mount compatible! Which is obviously a money grab to sell more stands.
      I do love using the Cintiq pro, but it sucks that you had such a bad experience 😕. Sending good vibes!

    I totally agree. I have owned both and now have a XP-PEN Pro 22e and love it. Also I have recommended it to my students and many of them have purchased it also. They share my views of loving the tablet. I also must say this. XP-PEN support is top notch. They are fast to respond and when one of my students had an issue they were quick to work to get it resolved. Even to the point of sending a replacement tablet out, though the issue I do not believe was the tablet. Even if you are just starting out in digital art or graphics pick up one of there low end models for under $50.00. I have one I carry in my laptop bag to use when I am out. Good luck and good drawing.

    This was a great review. Professional artist here 🙋🏾‍♀️. I've been using the xp-pen artist 22e HD which I think now they call the XP-Pen 22 pro - for about 5 years but I'm looking to upgrade and was really curious to know if the wacom would be worth it. Prior to the xp-pen I used the Intuos Pro which was nice but drawing directly on the screen is soooo much nicer. Anyway, I actually really like xp-pen. And I think this review confirms a lot of things for me. My only qualm about the xp-pen that I currently use is the color matching - it displays brighter than it should and the adjustments aren't great - but again I think this is just the case with my older model. Anywho, from someone who uses xp-pen, even with the older model, I really like it and I'll stick with the company a while longer....unless Wacom has some kind of magical sale or something...then we'll see 😁😏

    I have a Cintiq 16 and while I do love using it I also have a few rather negative things to say about Wacom lately. Especially in regards to the screen on the regular Cintiqs. They wear out like the regular Wacom tablets. Fast. After only 1 - 2 years I had that very smooth spot where I would usually draw and due to some minor surface scratching the tablet also had some strwaks of chromatic abberation. And they do NOT offer replaceable screen protectors. On surface that recieves mechanic wear, constantly. That is for me the biggest problem with the cheap cintiq line.
    After nearly 30 years of using Wacom products I am also ready to give one of their competitors a try. It's really good to hear from the perspective of someone who just bought all pen displays for the first time. Thanks. Hope you got a good price back for the ones you didn't use ^^

    I just returned my XP Pen tablet (same as the one in the video) after 2 months of use. Issues I had:
    1.Express keys constantly resetting (once every 10-20 minutes) to factory settings
    2.Express keys malfunctioning and spamming by themselves
    3.Tablet doesn't work if it's not being set as a main display (you can use the pen but the cursos will be on your main monitor which defeats the purpose of a screen tablet)
    4. Sometimes out of the blue the tablet would enter in sleep mode even if you're currently working on it. You can fix it ONLY by restarting your computer (turning on and off just the tablet doesn't work)
    These are all complaints I never heard from cintiq users. So I returned it and I'm going to save some money to get a cintiq, hope that will fix.
    Disclaimer: There are people that are not experiencing those problems at all, my friend has an xp pen pro 16 and is really happy with it. Maybe its just a compatibility issue with my pc, I don't know.

    THANK YOU! Fellow parent and 'ambitious amateur' who was equally nonplussed by all the existing reviews. I also have had hands on the Wacoms at illustration conferences; I agree there felt like there was a pricing mismatch. My fellow art friends are "all-in" on Wacom and I still couldn't feel like it was worth it. PS. I use a matte screen protector on my iPad that should help with the 'pen on glass' feeling of the XP Pen. So, all in all, I think I will just keep waiting and using the iPad until there's better options out there. I personally hate that the bezel of the wacom is 3-4 inches of wasted desk space. Honestly hoping someone in the TV monitor market will see this niched gap and come fill it. Quickly.

I haven't been able to evaluate longevity since I've only had the tablets for a few months, but the Intuous S I had still runs great.
      I have an iPad too, and I totally agree that matt screen protector is a life saver. You almost can't even use the iPad when you first open it without that protector. I wish they made that for a bigger tablet, I would buy it immediately (maybe I could just paste a few on together 😅.
      The bezel takes up SO much space compared to a tablet without. I'm currently trying out the Huion Kamvas 24 plus pro, which has no bezels, and I didn't realize how much it annoyed me until they weren't there.
      Thanks for the comment!

    this review was really helpful and to the point! im a student planning on pursuing a career in professional art and im leaning more towards the cintiq pro 24 than the xp pen because of the 4k display and better feel, but my only concerns are the infamous amount of hardware and software issues with the cintiq 24 and the extra $700 for the stand which is crazy. i figure that if i have the extra money i should just throw it on the cintiq 24 and live with it since i'm going to need a good pen display in the future anyways, but I also want to wait a bit in case xp-pen or huion releases a 4k 24 display sometime soon. once again i really appreciate this combined review!!

      Thank you for the kind words! I really think you can't go wrong with the Cintiq Pro, especially if you're a student just starting your art career. You'll keep it for a long time. One thing I would consider is, will you have a permanent desk? If not, you might consider a smaller tablet. I have a review of the Huion Kamvas Pro 16 coming out and if I were a student that may be the one I chose for the size and price (The Cintiq Pro also comes in a 16" option).

      Huion 22 pro is good value. It's not as good as Wacom but unless you had a Wacom that's not an issue and at hundreds of dollars less you will forget Wacom within a few weeks. Just be sure to get radiation filter and monitor glasses bcz the thing is bright. Maybe one day Wacom will devastate all competition by knocking 500$ off of their flagship models, but until then you can spend that same amount on an excellent workhorse.

    I'm quite curious why most of testers on yt did not see the big differences between wacom and chinese tablets in drawing feelings. In my opinion huion (so probably also xp-pen) have big difference in how you feel the surface you are drawing on. The feeling of drawing on huion is like drawing on normal screen with mate surface. I mean screen of monitor. You dont feel it is so comfortable like in wacom. It feels very cheap for me. I think I could live with lower resolution, a bit worse colors but the experience of drawing i think is most important in these devices. Probably you also chose cintiq pro over xp pen;).
    I dont know why you dont recommend 22hd if it have the same screen surface as cintiq pro and same pen?
    and thanks for review!

    • @TaylorStine
      @TaylorStine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I totally agree, the feel is the most important part of the tablet. The Cintiq Pro did feel a little better, but someone recommended I try the Huion felt tip pens, and I have to say that really improved my experience on the Kamvas screen. Really close to how the Cintiq pro felt, it was a really minor difference so it's hard to complain.
      I didn't feel like the 22 Cintiq had the same pen-on-screen feel as the Cintiq Pro. The Cintiq Pro felt much better by comparison. I thought the XP-Pen was really good by comparison.

    Illustrator here. I own an XP-PRO 22 and a Wacom Cintiq 24pro touch (I also have an iPad Pro, 3 wacom intuos tablets and a Cintiq 13). So I agree that Wacom is expensive, I’ve always wanted to own one since my art school days in the early 2000’s. BUT, you get what you pay for, once you try a wacom, nothing feels as good (only the iPad). It’s the best investment you can make. They also last well over 10+ years. I’ve noticed that people who tend to say that XP or Huion are better are on a budget. Also, most of the reviewers are ok artists, your work is amazing. All my professional friends own Wacom Cintiqs. As a matter of fact, I was trying to get rid of the XP to one of my friends (who is a successful 3D artist) and he returned it even though i was giving it away. I also wanted to love the XP, but it always felt cheap and unnatural. I took the dive and got the 24Pro Touch last year and it just feels so good, feels premium. If you have the money, buy the Wacom, if you don’t have the money, save up for a wacom.

    • @TaylorStine
      @TaylorStine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow, that's a lot of tablet experience! This is great insight. I'm with you -- the Cintiq Pro feels really good. If you're a professional and using it to make money, it's the right one to go with. My Intuous Pro has lasted for years so I can only assume the Cintiq will have good longevity.
      I want to find a way to evaluate the longevity of the other brands (I've heard some comments that they have issue but haven't experienced anything myself). I have an iPad pro as well, but I'm not as good on it as I am on the big tablet (I recently got it so I'm still learning). But it does feel pretty good, especially with one of those paper screen protectors.
      Thanks, this is great info!

      @@TaylorStineif you want durability go for and wacom intuos pro (non screen tablet). There’s something funny in some comments. If you are a pro you don’t need a screen tablet. You can buy one of course, but it isn’t a must. Non Screen tablets are more recommendable, they last way longer, they have a wonderful feel or sensation using the pen on the surface of the tablet. They are much cheaper and don’t spend so much electricity. If the layer of the screen start to get scratch you can easily change it. I have an intuos pro 3 since 2011 or 2012 and I’ve been using it to work professionally. I’ve never had any issue or problem. It always have worked smoothly. So, if you want to buy a screen tablet because you think it’s cooler go ahead, but don’t think about it as more professional because it isn’t. It’s just another way to work.

      This is something I'm starting to realize -- I just took Steve Hampton's figure drawing class and he only uses a Intuous without a screen. I remember trying to do this at the time but it was really challenging for me to map my hand movement to the monitor. Now that I've had more practice I'm going to give it another go because I suspect that you're right on the money.

    I had the XP-Pen22r Pro for 2 and half years, and didn’t have any issues until a few weeks ago. The display suddenly had green vertical lines running along the entire screen. Messaged their support, and they couldn’t do anything about it so it’s basically dead. Had to use my Cintiq 13HD (almost 10+ years old) and it still worked with no issue. So after this I’ll be getting Wacom for the longer term investment

    The 22inch model is very old, I would have suggested buying the cintiq 16 Pro. Its MUCH cheaper than the 24 inch model and has the newest technology and the highest resolution screen which you may not use while drawing but you can still use the resolution to see the image as it would be as a finished product. I have just ordered the latest iteration of the Wacom 16 inch Pro. I also think the size is really good if using it over many hours as its not so large requiring a great deal of arm, hand and head movement while using.

    thanks for the review but I'm all 2D and have a Cintiq 21UX that I've had for over a decade. I bought an older XP Pen because I needed one at work and being a contractor, they didn't buy one for me. It was a 22 inch but I didn't care much for it compared to my old Cintiq. The pen made a squeaky plastic noise whenever I drew and the buttons weren't programmable independently of the sides. Sooo... I'm just going to keep using my 21UX and wait for Cintiq to come out with something I'm going to love or wait for a competitor to make something comparable.

    • @TaylorStine
      @TaylorStine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know what you're talking about when it comes to the feel of the pen on the screen. That is the biggest thing I think the Cintiq has over the Huion and XP-Pen tablets I've tried (it's so hard to beat their pricing though). I've found that the felt nibs that come with the Huion pen actually really help reduce that squeakiness -- but they're a little bit of a softer feel when you draw.
      You might consider the Cintiq Pro, it is a really good tablet and probably has good longevity. Especially considering your a professional, it may be worth the investment. It's the tablet I use ever day (or at least when my parenting duties allow) and I do like the feel of the pen on the screen.

    Even though I have less surface area for gesture drawing and can't rest the palm always of my hand on it, I strangely get better results when drawing dynamic figures.
    The same applies to my "second" tablet, the Samsung Ultra Tab S8.
    I somehow have the impression that Wacom is no longer the Mercedes of pen displays in the lower price segment.
    I can't say anything about the Wacom Pro series.
    Yesterday I went to in a computer shop to try out the wacom again because I want to check out the current pen displays.
    Because I am meantime used to draw on smooth glas surface, the paperlike surface and the thick wacom pen was confusing to me.
    But what holds me back with xpen or huion is that you can only order online and there is no local store where you can try out the devices and in the case of a warranty give them back without shipping costs.
    Thank you for the interesting video.

    Yeah that's the thing a lot of people misunderstand about Wacom: the Cintiq Pro and Intuos Pro lines are great, but they're definitely victims of the land of diminishing returns. You're basically paying a x2 premium for a 10-15% increase in performance that non-pros are most likely not going to appreciate.
    Huion and XP-PEN are rapidly bridging the gap with their more premium tiers, like Huion's 4k Kamvas Pro models @4k. But even those are suffering a similar effect. (Baseline 16" Pro w/1080p display = $399, 16" Pro w/4k display = $850-899)
    So far Wacom is still the king of premium. (For now.) Especially when it comes to the subtle little things that don't really translate onto a spec sheet, like the intangible improvement in drawing experience you mentioned. :)

      It's so true. When you buy new tech is also so hard not to want the "upgrade" version even if you don't necessarily need it. I've definitely fallen victim to that 😁. Great points!

    Hello, what anatomy book did you read while recording this video?

    • @TaylorStine
      @TaylorStine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been reading through "Figure drawing design and Invention" by Michael Hampton. I also reference "Anatomy for sculptures" while I sculpt (but it can be information overload).
      My wife also has this great yoga book that shows the anatomy of poses but I can't find it right now to look up the title 😬

    This is the review i was looking for, but im curious why cintiq 22 hd had so bad impact on you. Was that really bad? How is the drawing feeling comparised to xp-pen? I bought this tablet 2 years a go and im planning to change for something similar in size, might be 16 inch as well. there is so many brands on the market. Is Xp-Pen still the best choice over wacom 22hd ? Thank you for your review!

    • @TaylorStine
      @TaylorStine  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A big reason why I wasn’t excited about the Cinq 22 HD was the price point especially when compared to the quality of the XP pen. I may have been a little bit callous here I know that there are some really quality artists that do amazing things with the Cinq 22 had.
      It was maybe close to the feel of the XP pen but I thought the display didn’t look as good as the XP pen. I have a Huion Kamvas Pro 22 inch I’m planning on reviewing, so that’s one option and you might consider the Cinq Pro 16. The Cintiq Pro has become the primary tablet I use and even though I believe it’s over priced it does feel the best. So depending on what you’re planning on doing with it or how much you’re planning on using it it might be worth the money for you to get the upgrade pick.
      Hope that helps!

    I got the 16" cintiq for $700. Not sure if that's a great price or not... I do zbrush sculpting.

    • @TaylorStine
      @TaylorStine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Based on the price I paid for the 22", I think you got a good deal. The 16" is probably a really good option (I have a separate video about 16 vs 24 inch) but basically I think there are a lot of advantages to getting a smaller size.
      A big one for me (I do a lot of zbrush too) is that on most tablets you can use the 16" as a pen tablet without a display, so you're not covering up your model with your hand while you sculpt (which was the hardest thing for me to over come).

      @@TaylorStine Thanks, I just got mine yesterday. Is the cintiq portable? Can I sculpt without hooking it up to the computer? Never tried it, does it have it's own battery?

    • @TaylorStine
      @TaylorStine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@murrowboy I have a 16" kamvas pro and that fits nicely into a standard 15" laptop sleeve, so it's definitely portable and I would imagine the Cintiq is the same. I don't think you can use it without a computer though. Depending on the poly count of your sculpt though, that may be a good thing if you need the processing power.

    I would use XP-Pen If I don't wanna touch the screen and I wanna have a great display that comes with great customizable buttons. I would choose Cintiq Pro for the touch screen and its great resolution and its great texture. and one thing that made Cintiq Pro more expensive is the touch screen sensor.

    • @TaylorStine
      @TaylorStine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting, I never tried the touch screen but I have an iPad that I've been using and it is really convenient to be able to navigate around a sketch with just touch (rather than needing to press a button and drag the pen).

    Does Cintiq 22 need an extra screen protector ?

    • @TaylorStine
      @TaylorStine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard of products like that (and I have one on my iPad that makes the screen feel more like paper) but I haven't tried one. It would probably be helpful, but even still I didn't like the way the display of the Cintiq 22 as much.

      I was having that issue for a little bit -- all of the games I wanted to play launched there by default. I have a Windows 10 PC and I think I just messed wit the primary monitor setting in Settings > System > Display. You might also try a different display port.
