I’d like to argue the point that Monk’s “eccentricity” really might have been that he was somewhere on the autism spectrum, in the sense that he had the means to function within the organized world but he may largely have lived more in his own mind. Even so, Monk was gifted and thankfully his talents and dedication to his craft and the music itself was nurtured in a way that ultimately benefitted his career.
You bring up an interesting perspective! It’s well-documented that Monk faced unique struggles throughout his life, but what’s truly remarkable is the support system he had. His mother, his wife Nellie, and later Nica de Koenigswarter were pillars in his life, providing the care and stability he needed to focus on his music.
