I don't know how far into the game you guys are but the starbase commander has some suggestions on how to get minerals based on the color of the planet. Additionally the hotter the star the greater the likelihood of having high mineral planets in orbit (but those planets are riskier to mine.) Giant stars will have Melnorme trading ships around them, you need to either sell them biological data or co-ordinates of rainbow planets to buy technology upgrades. Also: You set the "Cyborg" setting, which means your battles are fought by the ai.
