Clowny you are the man! I did this repair this weekend, took me some doing, but I got it done solely because of your video, and for that I say thank you. But I had a huge road block when it came to the AC compressor. I got out the bolt and nut, but struggled for over an hour getting the unit to come out, I had to use a 2x4 and a mallet to drive it out from underneath the car towards the wheel well. I discovered that there is a bolt that “pinches” the back of the compressor to keep it stable. When I reinstalled it, I made sure it was loose and it just slid into place, then I snugged it up. Anyone found this repair please be advised of this step, could save you lots of time.
I recently changed the oil pan gasket on my 3.9 2007 Impala. I’ve had the car for 5 years now, and it had always leaked oil since I got it. Never had the chance to change it until recently. The procedure on that engine (3.9) is exactly the same as in the video. I actually rewatched it over 10 times so that I didn’t miss a step along the way. A little bit of elbow grease and patience, plus 16 hours of work, I got it done. Without this video, I wouldn’t have dared doing the whole procedure.
@@tripleooo7881 No, I did not. Most of the process I used a 3/8 flex head ratchet with shallow sockets (I used an electric ratchet too where accessible to speed up things). It's kinda tricky, but it is possible.
I work at a Chevy dealership and we had one of these come in and the procedure GM called for was to drop the subframe among other things like the lower control arm on the passenger side and it made me nauseous just thinking about how I would have to do that to my car until I saw this video. From what I’ve gathered between Impala forums, GM’s procedure and this video, it seems like this is the most DIY friendly approach despite how unbelievably involved this job is. Thank you for making this video.
Thank you soo much for showing how this is done step by step. You did an awesome job of explaining the procedure. I am a certified atv mechanic, so I know the basics but when it comes to cars, they are another breed. I really don't want to do it but I would rather do it myself than let my mother spend the several hundred dollars at the shop.
This is very in depth, nothing like it on TH-cam so thank you so much! Will attempt soon! Appreciate the foreknowledge of what needs to be removed before starting the job!
A sincere thank you for this how-to. Just replaced the oil pan gasket on my 09 Impala. We would not have been able to do the job without this how-to. Thanks again.
I commented 2 months ago saying me and my dad would reference this and I've got to say it was a HUGE help, sadly I wish we would've paid better attention to the RTV part cause we did it all the way around and blew the first gasket we put, tried it how it was done here and it's sealed perfectly after two days of work 👍 thank you!

Just did this and the video was a tremendous help. THANK YOU! I couldn't believe what awful shape the old seal was in. It was brittle and cracked in places. Took us 4 hrs on a hoist. Lots of stuff to remove but after watching the video 3x, it was all straightforward, just a lot of work. No J-tool needed. We didn't remove the trans mount and just lifted up on the accessory drive side. We used permatex instant return to service sealer. 3 days later, still dry and I hope to get another 100k+ out of it. Thank you again. Great public service.
My Mechanic told me its about 8 hrs to fix it, after I saw ur Video and tools I decided just add oil and let the car age, I love My Impala 08 I travel all over united states with my family , great car to travel and very reliable but its time to slow down on this car, Great Video.

Very good video. Helped me step by step through the whole thing. Really no special tools needed. You'll beed a engine support bar. Harbor freight has one for $90. And a torque wrench. Funny thing about all data (I don’t think it’s all datas fault) is that the service info tells you to put RTV on ONLY the rear main seal corners in one install guide, but in another install guide it tells you to put RTV on all four corners 🤷♂️. But really you should put it on all four corners lol. Another thing is when I did the timing cover gasket for this engine, there were two bolts that went into the cooling jackets of the engine. I have a 2007 impala. Auto shop told me that to replace oil pan gasket, it would get pretty involved, and they would have to remove some steering linkage first to drop the pan. Then do a realignment afterwards. This would cost about $830. before tax. Seeing this, makes me wonder if they really need to do all that. I'm thinking that perhaps this is another way to do it. Following the old saying, 'there is more than one way to skin a fish'. I hope they are not pulling one over on me. Great video! Thanks for this!
So I just completed this, and the oil filter adapter. 😢 Wow, what a pain. I also did the rear valve cover gasket. It still leaks, maybe from the head, idk. Less but still leaks. Gunna try a die to try and find it. Do yourself a favor and get a motor mount since you have to remove it anyway
Thanks for looking out you made it easy step by step. But never aging took me 12hrs from working on jack stands. I think it would been easier just to do engine swap lol
joeblackakareaper yes please don't! I have a 07 and they suck! I had this done already! Transmission rebuilt ( which is common for these cars) ..now I'm at intake gaskets ( which is also common for these cars cause GM uses plastic) 800$ job! It's the LABOR that KILLS you with these cars!
YIKES! All that to replace a $12-20 part?!?!? I thought this would be a fairly quick & cheap thing I could do in my driveway. I guess I'll just keep adding Lucas at each oil change. It keeps my 206K mile 2011 at about 1/2 a quart of loss per oil life cycle.
Yeah the shop I usually go to quoted me like $900 and there might be other leaks. Just looked up the Lucas additive, I’ll probably go that route, too. Glad to hear it’s worked for you. My ‘06 only has 135K, and is actually in pretty good shape besides this leak. Hoping I can keep it going a while longer.
I'm now thinking that doing this on an Impala with 220,000 miles is not worth it...otherwise it's a solid car...just leaking oil. I wonder if some sort of oil treatment could seal it up (does one like that exist)?
exact same issue on my sons 2008 impala. considered doing this myself, after this I think I'm not the guy. where are you guys located. need another job?
Pretty sure you have to flush the system with water to get the dex crap out, then yes, regular old neon green is fine. Dexcool will coagulate when mixed with green from what I've heard.
At least now I know this is NOT a DIY beginner activity! Knowing how much work it takes, I guess I really can't bitch about how much they charge for it!
Looks like I'm gonna be doing this job. Used car I got, but with only 106k it does run and shift smooth. Looks like it needs the filter housing gasket, rear valve cover gasket and im thinking the oil at the front side of engine is the oil pan gasket. Hopefully I dont run into anything else as I tear it down
Hey klowny, I've tried replacing my oil pan gasket on a 3.5l montana sv6 twice. It still leak at the reat of the engine. Autozone said something about using a putty knife to jam RTV into the corner where the rest bearing cap is. Can you provide any insight into this? Much appreciated.
@@klowny1969 I appreciate the reply. The leak is coming from the oil pan gasket even after I changed it. I was hoping to get more information of the application of RTV at the junction of the block and the rear bearing cap.
Is there anything I can use in lieu of the J-39505 tool. I'm gunna attempt this job this coming saturday, and am terrified I may not complete it without this tool.
I need to do this to my 2006 3.9 LTZ but what's the J-tool supposed to do? It doesn't appear you filmed that part. It seems Ebay is the only place to get ahold of one. Are they available elsewhere?
Valvoline rapid oil striped out the oil pug and the cost for a Chevrolet Impala engine oil pan replacement is between $891 and $1,146. Labor costs are estimated between $610 and $770 while parts are priced between $281 and $376. Valvoline is putting in a $3 pan saver plug because the cost is too high and will not pay for it..
That J tool I looked it up. Doesn't look the same. Looks like you used a curved rachet. Do you need the J tool or is there something else as a substitute.
Clowny you are the man!

joeblackakareaper yes please don't! I have a 07 and they suck! I had this done already! Transmission rebuilt ( which is common for these cars) ..now I'm at intake gaskets ( which is also common for these cars cause GM uses plastic) 800$ job! It's the LABOR that KILLS you with these cars!
yeah, its a push rod engine so you never have to do a timing belt, so that makes up for it.
klowny1969 for you because your shop charges a ton just for this kinda job
LOL
Great video super helpful and well made too ! Thank you
Thank u
Could you lose oil slow with a bad gasket because I don’t think I’m burning oil but the bottom of my pan does look like it has oil on it
U sure can..but make sure it's the pan that the oil is coming from
Same problem do you ever get a low oil pressure warning
Great patience and skills.
Thank you
This job is a master thanks it’s looking like I might be doing the same thing on a 2008 Saturn VUE with the same engine
thank you..dont forget to subscribe
i like to know if you did anything with exhaust system ?
No
Well freaking done sir Iam way over due on mine it's doable but I really need that lift. Good work great video again well done.
thank you
Just as bad as bmw oil pans if not worse 😂😂 great video and good work!
Thank you!! dont forget to subscribe
What a job ...and i know they will get worst over years, thanks for the great video
Thanks for watching and commenting
Man I love your videos you do good work
Chad Gardee thank u
Would highly recommend replacing those two lower engine/trans mounts they were $12ea on Rock Auto
Thanks..don't forget to subscribe
For that back of pan bolt the second one in the tight space use a shallow my deep socket didn't fit but the shallow did
I'm now thinking that doing this on an Impala with 220,000 miles is not worth it...otherwise it's a solid car...just leaking oil. I wonder if some sort of oil treatment could seal it up (does one like that exist)?
I'm in the same situation. Mechanic wants $1500 to do the job! 3.9L 2009 Impala with 220,000 miles.
Nothing like a $2500 oil pan gasket replacement. Just replaced my transmission myself, I really missed the opportunity to chang the pan gasket ffs.
Sorry to hear..don't forget to subscribe
Very well explained. Thank you
Thanks..dont forget to check out my apparel..the link is in the description..thanks
exact same issue on my sons 2008 impala. considered doing this myself,
after this I think I'm not the guy. where are you guys located. need another job?
Thanks but I'm really backed up with work..don't forget to subscribe
I think every gm car has this problem... on a side note can I switch from Dex cool to something else?
Pretty sure you have to flush the system with water to get the dex crap out, then yes, regular old neon green is fine. Dexcool will coagulate when mixed with green from what I've heard.
if you switch back to the green stuff then you are back to changing the antifreeze...what every other year.
Clowny to the rescue
Great video Manny. GM don't make that oil pain easy to drop!
Fireship1 lol thank u..yes unlike other cars that come right off!
are the steps the same for the 5.3 ls4?
Dude, your videos are literally the BEST!! Quick question, do you have the torque sequence/torque for the 3.9l engine?
i have trouble with oil pan bolt in crack access the angle i cannot get on bolt can you tell what you use my bolts are 13mm
Wobble long 1/4 inch extension..I think i spoke about it in the video
Hey Klowny let me just say that i am always interested in your videos always havn cool running chevys getn sideways, my kinda peoples...
Dana Tostado lol thank u
Can this job be done on the ground with a floor jack? or is it no recommended?
Yes it can..but it will be a little more difficult..don't forget to subscribe
At least now I know this is NOT a DIY beginner activity! Knowing how much work it takes, I guess I really can't bitch about how much they charge for it!
Sorry about that..but u can still subscribe 😉
Klowny I have an 08 Impala 3.5 same issue as the video. Been looking for a reputable place to take my car for repair I'm in the Bronx. Any ideas?
Looks like I'm gonna be doing this job. Used car I got, but with only 106k it does run and shift smooth. Looks like it needs the filter housing gasket, rear valve cover gasket and im thinking the oil at the front side of engine is the oil pan gasket. Hopefully I dont run into anything else as I tear it down
Good luck with solving all the leaks! Dont forget to subscribe 😉
Is this the same procedure for a 3.9 or, is it different?
Awesome video. Thanks so much.
Nice job ! Great video detail 👍👍
juiced71 thank u sir!
I would check the crank oil seals and intake manifolf
@@klowny1969 I appreciate the reply. The leak is coming from the oil pan gasket even after I changed it. I was hoping to get more information of the application of RTV at the junction of the block and the rear bearing cap.
just did this job , thank you
Awesome..don't forget to subscribe
Is there anything I can use in lieu of the J-39505 tool. I'm gunna attempt this job this coming saturday, and am terrified I may not complete it without this tool.
I spoke about that in this video, I didn't use the J tool
I need to do this to my 2006 3.9 LTZ but what's the J-tool supposed to do? It doesn't appear you filmed that part. It seems Ebay is the only place to get ahold of one. Are they available elsewhere?
I did the job without the j-tool..dont forget to subscribe
Good bless you guys
Thanks man..don't forget to subscribe
Doing one right now.
Awesome good luck..don't forget to subscribe
Valvoline rapid oil striped out the oil pug and the cost for a Chevrolet Impala engine oil pan replacement is between $891 and $1,146. Labor costs are estimated between $610 and $770 while parts are priced between $281 and $376. Valvoline is putting in a $3 pan saver plug because the cost is too high and will not pay for it..
That J tool I looked it up. Doesn't look the same. Looks like you used a curved rachet. Do you need the J tool or is there something else as a substitute.
Sorry if I wasn't clear..I said that you don't need the j-tool for the job..you can do it the way I did it..don't forget to subscribe
@@klowny1969 cool thanks.
Is this The same process for an 03 Impala as well man that's a lot of work
It's very close; I'm doing it now on a 2003 Impala 3.4L
GM dealer told me 11 hours of labor for this...understand now.
Do I really need that jtool? Saw you use a normal socket wrench. Just trying to figure if I can do without
You can do what I did..don't forget to subscribe
could u do a video of replacing the a/c compressor for 06 impala in the future?
Dominique Hayes sure..if i ever do one
