    I loved this video. My check ride was in a Warrior, not as nice as yours, back in 1981. You brought back fond memories. My check ride pilot was a woman who ferried new build bombers from Kansas City to the east coast during WW II. Christie, follow your dream 👍🏻🇱🇷😀🛩

      My mom put me on a Boeing 727 by myself when I was about six years old in the late 60's.
      When the plane started accelerating I immediately liked the feeling and when the runway dropped away (which is how I saw it as a kid) I was hooked for life.
      The flight attendants didn't have to worry about whether or not the little six year old kid by himself was okay or not, they had to worry about whether he was going to get off the plane without causing a scene.

    I bought my first airplane out of Denton, TX, had it flown to Waterbury Connecticut. A 1971 Piper Cherokee, nice little airplane, then a Warrior, then an Archer, then an ArrowII, then back to the great little Warrior...man did I have a great time. All in all, I had 3 Warriors..🙂

    Great video! The Piper Warrior is a terrific airplane that offers exceptional value. My PA28161 gives me a solid 122 KTAS at 75% power burning less than 10 GPH. The gross weight increase to 2440 lbs provides a useful load of 950 lbs. Truly one of the best bang for the buck 4 place fixed gear airplanes out there.

      With the 180HP Bold Warrior conversion, I’m guessing she has the 60 degree climb prop installed. Also, she leans 8 gal an hour, which is pretty low cruise on a Bold Warrior.

    In 1978 I used to fly a new 160 hp Warrior. The aircraft was very stable and very forgiving, unfortunately it was also very slow although not a problem for short hops under 200 nautical miles. One thing the archer had that the trainer Warrior did, like the one shown in this video, was effective wheel pants that made the aircraft a little faster because they were much more aerodynamic than dragging simple round wheels through the air. I like the pants you have on, a great statement. It is good that you have a commercial ticket, your audience may not know that commercial pilot training teaches you to handle aircraft with precision and the instrument rating teaches accurate navigation in IMC. Thank you for this video.
    EDIT: Steep turns for me was 60 degrees of bank. Fun steep turns was 90 degrees of bank.

  • @Stepclimb
    @Stepclimb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    Christy,
    The high pitched whine in the intercomm is a failed diode in your alternator. You can tell the frequency of the whine changes with engine RPM.
    Depending on the type of alternator you have, the diode rectifier unit can be removed and replaced without removing the alternator.
    You will want to fix this before doing a panel upgrade since some avionics don’t tolerate AC noise well.

    • @pilotchristy
      @pilotchristy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Stepclimb Thanks for the heads up! We replaced the alternator just a few months ago...it did the same thing with the old alternator. Any way to easily fix it?

    • @Stepclimb
      @Stepclimb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      christinawong82
      First, I would check the log entry to see what type of alternator you have.
      There is a slim chance your alternator was replaced but the rectifier (usually attached to the alternator) was not.
      Next, to lead us in the right direction, start the engine and set up the radios so that you hear the whine. Then turn off the ALT side of your split master switch. If the noise disappears, the problem is isolated to the Alternator.
      Another source of that noise could be shielded wires not properly grounded.
      Usually, but not always, the main wires that come from the alternator to the main buss and to the voltage regulator are shielded with an outer fine wire mesh that should be attached to structure (aircraft ground).
      If the noise persists with the alternator off, check the condition of the p leads going to the magnetos as well, if they are shielded, make sure the shielding is grounded.
      However, I suspect your issue is with the alternator diodes.
      The alternator makes AC power and the diode bridge and capacitor in the rectifier change it to DC and smooth out the AC “ripples”
      When a diode fails, the AC ripples are heard through the intercom.
      Checking each of these connections is quite easy if you are comfortable with removing your top and bottom cowl.
      Please let us know what you find!

    • @chrisrose5503
      @chrisrose5503 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      christinawong82 don’t worry about what Stepclimb is telling you. He may be right but very unlikely especially if the whine was present with the old alternator. The whine is from ground loop (electrical kind, not tail-dragger kind😄). Unfortunately this is hard to find because it’s probably coming from many points that were not grounded properly in original wiring, or upgraded wiring, or resistance due to light corrosion at various ground contacts. If you can live with the whine then I would. To solve it is like hunting for needle(s) in a haystack.

    • @Stepclimb
      @Stepclimb 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Chris Rose
      As I mentioned to her in the fourth paragraph above, it could also be a ground loop issue.
      I guess we are all waiting to see if the noise disappears when she has the engine running and shuts off the ALT side of her split master switch.
      If the noise persists, then yes it is probably a ground loop. But since the frequency of the noise seems to change with engine RPM, that points me to look for a failed diode in the rectifier.

    I learned to fly at N34 Turner Field Piper Flight Center Horsham Pennsylvania, after 4 years in the Marines 1967-70 and going to college, 25 years Mainframe Information Systems Analyst / Programmer. I rented the Piper Warriors 150 HP with the balance aileron and 160 HP ones for around 100 hours. Later, I bought a used Piper 79 Archer and then a 82 Tomahawk II. The 180 HP Warrior would be nice with a constant speed Prop. I am retired now, 70 years old, I miss flying, but it is to expensive anymore.

    Great GA airplane. Flew the 151 for the first half of my private license. Then bought a 140 to finish my license, but really liked the 151 better. The 140 was STC'd for auto gas so it was cheap to fly, but the annuals were the expensive part of flying.

    • @FlyingDoodles

      Yeah it was nice to get autogas but now you can’t use autogas anymore because almost all autogas has ethanol now and that is really bad to let sit in an airplane.

    Christy, When performing your flight control checks, check their full travel. Yoke full forward, then while maintaining the full forward position. Full left, then full aft with the yoke still in the full left position, then full right with the yoke still full aft, then forward. This checks for possible binding throughout their full travel. Also, obviously check to insure your ailerons are moving in the proper direction during your flight control check. Also, keep your transponder in standby during taxi ops. Tailwinds...

      Transponder on "ALT" now is SOP unless otherwise directed by ATC

    Another great video. I'd really like to see more info about the aircraft, though. I like the pilot's stories, don't get me wrong, but more info, like the history not of the individual plane but the model, what variants exist, how long it was in production, etc.

    There is a fix for all that electrical noise... The Warror is way better than the Cardinal. Cardinal. does have nice unique looks over the common C-172 (which is a better plane than Cardinal), but the Cardinal is under-powered, gutless. A 180HP Warror is basically an Archer, which is a great plane. Puts wheel pants and gap fairings on the Warror and it's fairly fast decent XC plane.

    Watched this video for the third time I think. I have wanted a C177 Cardinal for so long, and still love it, but I'm now considering a low wing 1973 Bellanca Super Viking 17-30A. High performance and complex I know, but what a plane. 160 knots at 14 GPH. I want.

      Yeah I really like the super Viking. If I ever am able to buy a plane again I might get one.

    did STC require engine change or a modification with it "on wing still?" There is also a 210hp version of the IO-360 which the factory stroked out to an IO-390 displacement? With a light MT 3-blade prop it would approach Dakota performance since it's 220# lighter.

    Hey Christy, i went on a trial/discovery flight wednesday (29th june 2022) and i think i was supposed to be going in a warrior, but i ended up going in an archer, not a lot of difference, there from the same family of aircraft, just a little more power?
    It was a brilliant experience, it was very very turbulent, and when i was handed the controls, i was constantly correcting the pitch and roll, i didnt really have a lot of time to do much else, my pilot did show me a climb, which i did, and a descent, which i did too, i did a few banks, but i was banking very shallow to start with, but my pilot took over once to show me a steep bank, then i did the same degree of bank, i think it was 40 degrees of bank
    We headed back towards the airport, we got about half a mile away before my pilot took over again, he talked me through the procedure for joining the circuit, we even did a go around because we were a little faster than the aircraft in front, and he wouldnt have vacated the runway before we had to land
    So yeah, a great experience
    I got my class 2 medical booked for monday, hopefully i pass that and i can take to the air again soon, im planning on doing my ppl, and taking friends and family on leisure flights
