  • Allison and Katie collect monarch butterfly eggs and raise them to butterflies. We caught four emerging from their chrysalises on video. I was recording with my iPad, which ran out of memory just as the last one was hatching.

    Wow, saw this in our local nature centers butterfly house. Never get tired of butterflies. I have plants that they love in my flowerbeds. I always leave a few milkweed around too.

      This was the one and only time I witnessed it, but my daughter saw it quite a few times.

    For anyone who sees this, please know that for health reasons, you shouldn't have this many chrysalides in one eclosing container. And the dark black bits that are hanging from a few chrysalides are the sloughed off skins of the caterpillar as it formed its chrysalis. It needs to be removed or it can cause problems for the butterfly forming or emerging. Just use a Qtip to nudge it gently off.

      Wow, I don't usually get comments on this video. This was done way before I really started doing TH-cam seriously. It was one of the motivating factors in getting me started. I just put the video on TH-cam for somewhere to store it and was shocked a couple years later to see that it had a lot of views. I figured that if a video with no sound could do this well, then I had a chance of succeeding if I was actually trying.

    I raised 149 a couple yrs ago… different batches so they were not overwhelming. The last batch was so fun and when the last one flew… it was sad… love butterflies 🦋

    I love butterflies! I could watch that huge collection of those butterflies hatching from their chrysalises for hours!
    I just wish there were videos featuring huge collections of other types of butterflies hatching too.

      That's exactly what my daughter did. She learned to recognize eggs on milkweeds. They're just little black specks.

      I have only been seriously doing TH-cam for about three years. Before that I had some juggling stuff and some videos of my son unicycling. This was something I just caught on my iPad. My daughter raised these and called me down to the basement to see some coming out. We were talking back and forth as they came out, so I just deleted the audio. A few years later I noticed that it had a lot of views. I was shocked. That was one of the things that made me think it might actually be possible to have a TH-cam channel that people wanted to watch. I know this one is on a different topic than all my rock videos, but it still has one of the highest view counts of all my videos, so I just couldn't take it down.

    He was working in his lab late one night when his eyes beheld a beautiful sight,
    Hello "Michigan".
    Well it's late at night here anyway and this was a nice video to stumble upon.
    You were/are a science teacher, right?....you don't need to answer that.
    You know, you and your rock hound buddies should take over the world...you'll have competition...but it's "real people" people that would be so helpful during this time of uncertainty.

      I was a math teacher for thirty years and just retired last year. My wife is a science teacher at the same school and is retiring this year.
      My daughter used to raise monarchs with a friend. This video was just something I caught one day and decided to put on TH-cam. A couple years later, I was shocked to see that it had something like 60,000 views. It was this video that was part of my decision to start making TH-cam videos more seriously.

    Hey Rob, you mentioned these before when I thanked you for helping a wet Monarch to get out of the surf, Very cool! Beautiful little beasties, my favorite flying creature by far. I had the honor to be stationed at Fort Ord, CA in the early 80’s when many millions of Monarchs came through. The whole town of Monterrey kind of slowed down so as to not step on or run into them. Covered whole trees! I never knew you could raise them yourself. Are they like salmon and come back to where they emerged?

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It must have looked like fall there when they were all over the trees.
      I haven't noticed any coming back, at least not in large quantities. My daughter is grown and married now, so there haven't been any of these little guys in my basement for awhile.

    • @berjo77
      @berjo77 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MichiganRocks , it looked like late fall with a normally green Northern California tree all green then suddenly dark with their black, folded wings. Then a bus passes by, or a bird overhead, then boom, bright orange ball twice the size of the tree. One of the more amazing things I’ve seen.

      This was my daughter's project when she was in high school. She's now all grown up and married now. She is a teacher and her classroom is decorated with butterflies. Her friend showed her how to recognize monarch eggs. They're little black specks found on the underside of milkweed leaves. They also found small caterpillars, but I think the majority were collected as eggs. I think she raised over 100 that year.
