I attended Elmhurst from 1981 to 1985 and moved to FLA in 1989 and live in Gatlinburg TN now...it was my favorite school and I can't believe it's torn ..I remember Bus 9 on the green line being called as it was time to go home...Great job
Thank you so much for this video. It makes me sad to see the school gone but does bring back wonderful memories. Glad you enjoyed Elmhurst as much as we did. Sandy Lane Cross Elmhurst '64.
I went their as well I graduated high school the year before you. But I attended Elmhurst from 1st grade - 4th grade. Thank you for making this makes me miss the memories of elmhurst as well
I was walking my dog and I believe I saw you making this video. I live up the road from this spot. I miss hearing the children at recess during the day and although my children didn't attend Elmhurst I was very sad when they took it down. Thank you for sharing your beautiful memories!
Thank you so much for your kind words on this video everyone, I'm so happy to see how it turned out! There was a lot of footage that I ended up leaving behind in the final version (my class project wanted this to be around 3 minutes), and there is so much more I'd love to say about my memories of being there. Once time allows, I will definitely be going back and making a director's cut version of this video to include some of those thoughts and extra footage. Stay tuned, and thank you all again so much!
Hello! It's definitely been a little bit. I wanted to leave a pinned comment here noting that I've seen an uptick in views/subscribers as a result of my Swansea mall video from a couple years ago now. First of all, thank you for watching, I appreciate it so much! Secondly, for anyone wondering, I do still plan on making an update video talking about where the mall is today. I know I promised this ages ago, and trust me I wanted to make it then. Being in college certainly has it's complications...but I have not given up on it! There's been a lot of construction over there as of late and I'm looking for the best time and opportunity to be able to show what's happened without getting in anyone's way. So look forward to that soon! In the meantime, enjoy this short retrospective look back at the grounds of my former elementary school. I made it for class, but I felt that this one turned out really nicely :)
Someone down the page says that Elmhurst was a private school...only when it was Elmhurst Academy a Catholic girls' boarding school...that closed in the early 1970s.....Portsmouth bought the property around 1974......including the Glen Manor House...that is now rented out for events. That is when Elmhurst Elementary became one of the PUBLIC elementary schools in Portsmouth.....When we were at Coggeshall, before Elmhurst opened as a school, all of the teachers and students spent a day at Elmhurst....I think they were doing all of the "health screenings".......Honestly, the Elmhurst community was the best...but, the facility itself was never designed for elementary school children......Mrs. Arruda had to use the Chapel for the gym!!!! Collin, that is probably why she took the classes outside whenever she could! In between the Chapel and what used to be the Cafeteria when it was Elmhurst Academy were the offices for the Regional Special Education Department--then came the stairs going up to the Music Room (also assembly room) and down stairs to the Art Room.....The two Kindergarten classes were at the far northern end of the school....it was a "field trip" for those classes to come down to the music and art classes!!! It was at least a 5 minute walk!!!! No matter what....we made "it all" work.....wonderful memories with the awesome Elmhurst community!!! Susan Woythaler....Music teacher in Portsmouth 1969-2002.....
Definitely true, most kids from our class did go to either Melville or Hathaway. By the time we were all in middle school there was only a small group of us who had remembered it.
they tore down the flagpole that was raised with money the kids funded. through fundraisers. the company that did the demolishing is scumbag. to take out a flagpole and 2 other structures in the gym.
Yeah... I had hoped they'd try to save more of the remnants in some way or another. I believe they saved the stained glass from the chapel/cafeteria and a couple of other things but that's about it. It's sad that they wanted to tear it down so quickly without much care, the flagpole should have stayed.
@@susanwoythaler6792 I'm actually not too sure. I thought I had heard at one point that it went to Saint Barnabas Church, but I could very well be wrong about that. That was something I had heard rumors of back when the school was still sitting abandoned.
LOL What about Cogshell? Elmhurst was a private school, so wasn't St. Anthony and St, Phils. If you are adding private school why say there was only 3. And Cogshell was a public school. Elmhurst was gone long before Cogshell. You must have been a really privilege kid to go there.
Elmhurst was not a private school by the time I went there. Portsmouth bought the school in the 70s from when it was a boarding school and turned it into an elementary school. I was not "privlaged" going there, I was in the area the school served. You didn't choose what school you went to, that's how that worked. Coggeshall was gone well before I was born, it had been turned into the Aquidneck Island Christian Academy at that time. This video was about my childhood experiences.
@@CollinTurner He is correct. It was a public school owned by the town right after the Catholic School closed for many many years. I was a teacher there.

Colin, well done. You show that students take their memories with them when they move on. And you keep a bit of Portsmouth history.
This is great Collin! Very well done. Fond memories of my boys attending Elmhurst, teaching there and having you as a student.
So many of us miss that school! What a nice reflexion of how special it was.
Thank you. That was a lovely tribute to your Alma mater.
