I've talked to birds with similar tactics. And good job scratching and touching at the dirt. You totally connected with it. Birds are super smart and can feel our vibrations, so can frogs in my experience . I have been connected to the frogs since I was young. You could call me rhe frog whisperer. I even found a way to make a true frog sound using my tongue and upper mouth when I was a kid. I can communicate really well with crows. Great video!

No offence but thats not whats occurring, the bird is simply accustomed to humans probably because it is regularly fed by humans. His hands gestures and the scratching of the dirt probably tricked the Ruffed grouse into thinking the human was offering it food.

There’s a grouse here in Utah, I see her all the time. Her territory seems to include the loading area at one of the Park City ski lifts. She is incredibly tame.
I’m sure she’s accustomed enough to know that these goofy humans in the bright colors sliding around on the snow are not a threat, like the ones in drab green might be.
She probably gets food from people too, which undoubtedly brings her back… like every day!
It’s truly delightful (but also a little scary, in such a crowded spot) to see a wild bird comfortably interacting with humans.

@@NLGhostWolf yes, me too. Hawks, peregrines and woodpeckers. Porcupines, skinks, mantids and pine martens. An albino chipmunk and a grumpy, grumbly raccoon.
I think the standout encounter was riding my bike on a rail trail around 10 pm. I glanced up and a barred owl was flying about 5 feet above my head, keeping pace with my bike. For several seconds it seemed as if we were frozen in a frame of time. With no light to illuminate the trees around me and the owl going the same direction and speed… there was no movement reference. After a bit I slowed down to see what would happen. He swooped down in front of me, and back up to land on a branch. Then we just stared in each others eyes for a minute before I continued to ride home.

Jen I'm glad you have taken the time to view a lot of my videos. Yes I'm a hunter, trapper, fisherman and gatherer. But first and foremost I'm a nature lover. I love all aspects of the great outdoors and I'm left in awe of it's beauty each and every time I'm out there. But my most special moments out there are those moments where I can interact with the animals. I only wish I could have filmed all the different interactions I had with the different animals over the years. And you'd be happy to know that once I befriend an animal I never hunt in the locations where I believe those animals could or would be. For me friendships come in many different forms and once made they are sacred. Hope this helps you understand me a little better. And thank-you for your kind words and taking the time to leave a comment.

I feel the same way about animals. I’m a hardcore bird hunter but would never betray an animals trust by killing it. Once I’m acquainted with a critter we’re pals for life. I’ve been buddies with chipmunks, squirrels, deer and hummingbirds but never a grouse. Very cool videos. Most people think hunters are cold blooded killers but it just ain’t so. My dad won’t even hunt quail with me anymore because he had to ring the neck of a cripple and it broke his heart. He said he’d never shoot a quail again…& he hasn’t in 20 years.

Well done. Apparently the Dogrib tribe of Alaska would call in rabbits. I believe they kind of whistled which mimicked a female snowshoehare in heat.
Never heard it before u say? Well check out the 1974 action movie Thunderbolt & Lightfoot. There's a really wild scene where a crazy man empties his car trunk dozens of rabbits. Many of which are making this shrill whistling call.

Nl Ghost Wolf I stand corrected about your ability to call in and talk to Grouse. What you do is very rare but you have developed skills making sounds and gestures that attracts and puts Grouse at Ease, like nothing to Fear from this strange creature. Grouse that have rarely been hunted and shot at would act much more at ease and in your case allow you to talk to them and almost pick them up. Glad you made this video, it is surely a believe it or not for the record book.

@@NLGhostWolf sure I love to watch animals

    • @NLGhostWolf
      @NLGhostWolf  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

me too. I love to study their behaviour, their calls, feeding habits, etc... I have a number of grouse calling videos on my channel and moose calling videos on my channel. Nature and all it's creatures amaze me. I've spent countless hours out in the woods trying to better get to know and understand them. I will tell you this, the more time I spend with nature and the more animals I interact with, the harder and harder it gets for me to hunt. Enough though I seen first hand what happens to animals when they over come the carrying capacity of the land, meaning when their number explore to a point where the land they are on can no longer produce enough food to support their population. I seen first hand healthy animals enter starvation state, become weak and sick and disease like distemper take over to reduce the numbers. Healthy animals suffering for weeks and months. So I fully understand the importance of conservation practices. But the more I bond with nature the more connected I become with nature the harder it becomes to hunt. This is why I believe traditionally, as hunters got older and slower they were replaced with younger man/warriors. I believe it's a natural cycle we all will experience as we grow older and wiser. And just so you know, animals that I've befriended I never hunt.

Just to name a few, well grouse of course, fox, caribou, moose, wolves, coyotes, deer, had a small owl that would come and sit on my shoulder when I was a boy. I could walk around the neighbourhood with him. I walked with wolves, lynx, moose and caribou as well as mule deer and whitetail deer. Had a pet red squirrel who would come see me when I called out his name. Just love nature to the point where I find it hard to hunt. I still do, but hate to kill. I’ve hunted grouse for 41 yrs now and this is complete bs. It’s a tamed bird. He’s done this a million times before with the same bird. I have heard of tamed grouse, but it’s rare. Try that with another one. Good luck. You wouldn’t get within 50 yrds of it.

You may have hunted grouse for 41 years but you have no clue of what I can do with animals. Watch and Learn....

I've been doing this for over 41 years. I was raised in the woods in a very traditional manner. I've called in many different animals over the years and had been able to touch most. I never hunted for sport, we had to hunt for food, if we didn't kill, we didn't eat...

50 yards? What grouse and area do you hunt? I hunt Dusky and Ruffed Grouse every year (in the Rocky Mountains) and almost all my shots are 25’ to 30 yards. Once in a blue moon I have to reach out past 40/45 yards. PS it’s been a wonderful season so far. Been using an English Citori in .410 and been loving it.

@@purtnearperkins Eastern Ontario. They’re wild here man. Very very few this year. Too many predators. Haven’t shot one ruffed grouse now in 2 yrs. Old 16ga is gettin a lot of rest.

@@johnbozak1662Hmm sounds like a fun challenging hunt. (Sometimes the Duskys are just too easy here in Utah). I’ve been reading a pretty good study on Ruffed Grouse (Woodland Drummer Ruffed Grouse by Michael Furtman). He also cites other studies that show predators and hard winters are the primary reason many don’t survive. In the lake states MI, MN etc where several hundred thousand grouse are harvested each year it has shown to have pretty much no impact on population because most of them would have died off in the winter anyway. It’s primarily predatory birds and animals and the cold with lack of food that does it. Sounds like a great place to visit and hunt for a good challenge. I’ll have to put it on my bucket list. Last weekend I walked upon a large mature Dusky and didn’t see it until it flushed 6’ in front of me.
