    Prince is one of the greatest guitar players of all time. He can masterfully play any genre of music. Rock, Jazz, Blues, R&B. His versatility is stunning.

    I was lucky enough to see 3rd Eye Girl with Prince in Manchester shortly before he passed on. he looked completely at home with himself and the music and the hacked back to basics band and stage. The most enjoyable gig in my 57 yrs.
    Thanks for putting us on the right track with this stuff.

      I was at the MEN Arena gig and those 3rdeyegirl gigs weren't to be messed with. A party from start to finish and he looked so comfortable.
      I look back now and wonder if he knew something about his health that we didn't...? And if he did, I'm so glad he did things towards the end that clearly made him happy.

    Prince will easily go down as one of the most committed musicians in history. Probably one of the few enthusiastic enough to play every single instrument on every single song on every single Album! Awesome work here!

    Definitely would love to see more Prince videos. I heard a story that in Prince's recording studio he walked up to his session guitarist, took his guitar and said "No, I want you to play it like this!" The poor guy had to respond, "But only *you* can play it like that!" He was better than most guitarists. He could also play some mean drums.

    When MTV came on the air and I saw the early Prince videos, especially Little Red Corvette, Let’s Go Crazy, and Purple Rain, I was locked in as a fan for life. More Prince please! This was a great video to get me interested in playing more of his music. Cheers!

    in fact, when you listen to hours of Prince rehersals, lives, concerts, albums and so on, you see how he’s the one owning the soul of a Gilmour or a Santana or BBKing, combined to the technique of a Steve Vai or Yngwie. To me, he is the best expression of guitar playing.

    Prince loved to dance, he had the opportunity to train with the Minnesota Dance Company during high school through something called the Urban Arts Program. Prince learned ballet and the founder became a lifelong mentor. So Prince was very aware of his body and how to move and choreograph, he loved Bob Fosse. He was just the total package. It's in full display on the Sign O the Times movie.

    Unfortunately I spent too many years not "not giving a shit" when playing live. I had the notes, but had not mastered delivering them dressed in my own personality. Once I broke down that wall, my skill quickly elevated and, far more importantly, I started having the time of my life on stage.
    I hope future guitarists have this breakthrough so much earlier than I did.
    Pilgrim-thank you for your consistantly great videos - huge fan, and for utilizing the Strat/neck pickup position like you do. Electric Heaven. Stay safe everybody!!!

    Many overlook the fact that Prince was a spectacular arranger (like shown in this clip) and also a superb bandleader always in full control to start/stop/extend or change songs and solos on the fly almost like live conducting his band in real time whenever he wanted and lastly, his rhythm guitar playing was out of this world! (and these are all qualities on top of all the other well known talents he had). There's no denying, overall Prince is the most gifted and complete musician and artist of all time. ... so yeah, MORE PRINCE would be cool! ... O(+> 4ever

    There is an absolute ton to be learnt from Prince's guitar playing. From great inverted chords and held back soloing on Purple Rain, to single and two string funk rhythms on Controversy and 1999 albums, to amazing solos like we see here, and in Joy in Repetition (Live). And that only scratches the surface of what you can learn from Prince.

  • @lawrencetaylor4101
    @lawrencetaylor4101 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I studied in the Twin Cities during the 1980's and so Prince was a well known figure. I heard from a hotel worker that when Prince stayed in a hotel room, it was in his contract that the bathtub be filled with Whipped Cream. I was reminded of that when Pilgrim said that you couldn't play a song like that and stand still. I think the same would apply to a hotel room and a bathtub full of Whipped Cream. Great video, BTW.

    Great video. Especially the section (4:17) that covers Dead Notes, Hendrix, and Chords. It demonstrates why Prince -- and so many other great guitarists-- emphasized the importance of learning rhythm guitar first. It's hard to play out of time if your right hand stays in the groove. Check out just about any Stevie Ray Vaughan clip. Like Prince, it looks like he's playing rhythm during the leads.
