The Super Tinker is my current favorite. My other favorite would be the Wenger EvoGrip 18, but I rarely use a wood saw. The Victorinox scissors, two blades, Phillips and flathead screwdrivers are awesome to have. Wenger knives are still very useful and cool to have even though they aren’t manufactured anymore.
Owen Joseph King : You can assemble your own in places like the Victorinox flagship store in New York or in Brunnen, Switzerland. However, there are so many combinations that you might just end up making something that already exists. There are countless of them to choose from on the market.
Explorer plus is my favorite. I think it is the smallest one with inline Phillips so I can still have the corkscrew for the eyeglass screwdriver. The Climber with the stayglow scales and the evo s18 with locking blade are the runners up.
I just got this exact same knife about a month ago. Brand new in the case. Our local camping supply store was closing due to retirement, so not only did I find a cool Wenger, but got it at 50% off! I started off just carrying it in my pocket, but have switched it to my key chain.
Great video thanks. Very nice in the hand an the pocket. Both are nice paired together. I EDC the Leatherman Rebar with the SAK Champion Plus 🔪. They are not to big, medium & heavy duty, but can get done everything I need.
Oh damn it... Now I want to that knife... I already have the Leatherman Squirt and the Vic Alox Farmer and I went around the world with the 2 and it was almost perfect. he's absolutely right about the combination. But i was craving for tweezers and toothpick of this wenger packpacker... I think it's the most complete, effective and lightest multi-multi-tool kit one could bring along.
I agree...size/utility, this thing’s awesome. I just got a non-serrated one on eBay that’s barely been used. I pair it with my Spyderco “Delica 4” or my Leatherman “Skeletool” if I need pliers. This is my new favorite SAK.
The backpacker has the same toolset as the hiker which is still available.. £15 or $19.50 on Amazon You've said before you haven't the fieldmaster or the hiker, perhaps you should take a look? I like you have a large collection of SAKs but I have too say buy a hiker and see for yourself just how tough that little knife is...compare the back spring tension on the blade and saw against your ranger.. it compares favorably with the farmer.. my only reasoning is that the knife is a tighter package due to its narrower width but built the same with rivets n all... I've tried everything, I JUST CAN'T KILL IT!!! so I've bought 4! Very tough SOB and for $19.50 it's a no brainer for EDC the tool set of the beloved farmer plus the pen blade, philips, toothpick n tweezers.
Happy New Year! My favorite combines are from Victorinox - at home it is usually the Huntsman (which is my alltime favorite) plus a MiniChamp Alox, on the road I prefer to carry the Rucksack plus a modded MiniChamp in my pockets. For travels/rides/trails I have usually a Craftsman as backup.
Good video! I wasn't a fan of serrations but your video has me rethinking that. I just started carrying a Wenger Highlander with semi transparent handles (Similar to a Victorinox Tinker). I just throw it in my pocket and forget about it untill I need it which is all the time. I bought it several years ago and preferred the lack of tweezers and toothpick as I previously had a smaller Victorinox and lost both tools. Wanted to upsize and went with the Wenger instead of the Victorinox for that reason. Regards...
Just to add: I guess that the contemporary SAK equivalent is the HIKER model. It does not have a serrated, large blade and the format of the small blade is different. Though it has the same toolkit and truly, like the BACKPACKER it is a good tool overall. Cheers!
I actually like the somewhat uprgaded awl that comes on the alox models. You can use it to make holes into things, sctrach or mark things with the tip, use it to open knots and also use it for stuff you would't want to use your knife blade since the awl has an edge itself.
I wonder if sharpening the flat head screwdriver for use as a chisel would be successful... I've heard that Victorinox, the other Swiss army knife maker, uses a softer steel for their screwdriver tool as compared to their knife blades. That keeps it from breaking, but might also prevent putting a keen edge on it.
Should point out that since this vid was made, Victorinox bought Wenger out so now there is no separate Wenger brand. As such there is no longer a Backpacker model. The closest to this is actually the one I have and my EDC, but one which is serviceable for light bushcraft, which is the Hiker, which has the same blades/tools as the Backpacker. It only differs in 3 ways: 1. the main blade isn't serrated (which I prefer) 2. the secondary smaller blade is the standard shape i.e. the same shape as the main blade, just smaller; and 3. the can opener isn't ''lobster claw'' shaped i.e. curved like this one, but the upside of this is that it has a small slot head screwdriver which can also be used in smaller Phillips screws...so all in all I actually think my Hiker is (slightly) better than the Wenger Backpacker.
also a benefit to the older wenger models is that when the bottle opener is fully opened and if you apply pressure it locks open and wont slip and close on your finger.
Interesting choice . . . and I can appreciate wanting something slim. If push came to shove and it came down to just one, and only one, my choice would be the 5-layer (and now discontinued) Woodsman, even though it's too wide for pocket carry under many circumstances and I'd be wearing it on a belt much of the time. It combines the Explorer and Huntsman with saw, magnifier and Phillips. Victorinox resurrected it for their 130th Anniversary in 2014, but only in the Mexico market, and I've no idea what the quantity were, but obviously it was a single production run. There are solid red and translucent ruby red variants. You can still find these on eBay, but oddly the lowest price new ones are from a Canadian seller. Used one in the U.S. Army for 20 years and it was a McGyver toolbox that saved my ass and fixed more "stuff" on more occasions than I can recount.
Victorinox hiker is currently available for sale and in my opinion equally good. I generally dislike serrated knife blades because of how much effort is required to sharpen them, and to sharpen them correctly requires proper tools. Tools I generally don't carry afield. I can sharpen a straight edge blade on a smooth stone, the bottom of a coffee cup or bowl, etc....
Happy New Year Gents. Well, what a question indeed. I have come to the conclusion that the favorite SAK is always the next model I crave (LOL)... I shall answer, though and the "RANGER" is my favorite. Cheers!
I agree with your assessment completely, and have been on the lookout for one of these for years. Finally, I just snagged a very fine conditioned one on ebay for $5. The previous owner had no idea what model it was, or that it even had a saw, and thought it was a serrated tinker. I am on cloud nine, and truly LOVE a fully serrated main blade. Ps: have been a fan of your channel for a while now, and hope you will keep up the good work.
11-types of cutting...cool! My Wenger Camping has a cork-screw instead of the Phillips-driver. I'd rather have the Phillips. I plan to convert the cork-screw with the Victorinox mini-driver. Great review! Ty.
I agree I find it extremely dumb that victorinox models with two blades are always the same. I have a small tinker and I’m planning on serrating the secondary small pen knife. Why they don’t do this from the get go I have no idea
Israel l, HAPPY YEAR HERE TO YOU and yours. And I thank you for the entire TH-cam community for your great videos throughout the year 2014. Although you cost me plenty of $ but I look forward everyday to seeing one of your reviews. Thanks again for ALL you do. Al (Wisconsin).
Well-done. I can see your points, but as cool as it is, I don't have much use for a saw. You said this is a good knife for EXPECTED tasks. But if I expect to need a saw, I'll bring a better one than on a SAK. The Wenger like this, but with their awesome scissors would be a "better" pick.
A Super Tinker with a serrated knife (either the long knife or the short knife) would be my choice for EDC Victorinox if it existed. Or a Super Tinker with a non-serrated long knife, and a nail tool like the one on the Cadet instead of the short knife. Either way.
ive cut drywall before by drawing the can opener across the board like your box cutting mention, then folding the board to break it strait down the cut. The actual cut doesn't go right through the board so would be considered SCRIBEING...and that's a type of cut, and that make 12 ways to cut!
Got a part serrated highlander in the mail. 👍🇨🇭 Also, I love the outside accessible hole punch on the Wengers. Sometimes I almost bust a nail on my Victorinox trying to reach around the corkscrew to the get to awl.
Five + years later, is this still your favorite SAK? I am curious because the Wenger Backpacker was my favorite also for many years (no serrations) until I retired it 3 years ago. Nowadays I sport the good old Explorer or Pioneer X for an edc and the Trekkier for outdoor uses.
I've kept my eye out on eBay for one of these in new or good condition on and off ever since I watched this video and rarely have I seen one going for less that $60-$70. Apparently you're not the only one who finds it desirable.
Oh, by the way, My new Victorinox so far is one of my Fav's bush pocket knife, The blade and Saw are big, which I like, and the Screwdriver locks when you push down on it for safety, neat Huh ?, , ,
Damn, do every knife come that sharp out of the box? I've tried a SwissChamp which was very sharp, but not butter smooth as this one. But i'm waiting for me WorkChamp to arrive, which i'm guessing will be like butter 'cause of larger size, and more focus on the knife part 'cause of the locking blade.
I was gifted a Victorinox backpacker once, as a young lad in the mid 1980's. I think that's what it was; It had a backpacker etched on it's side, and it had the wood saw, which I thought was excellent. No serrated blade, but the awl and everything else. I lost that knife long ago somehow, and every now and then, I remember it, and kick myself for having lost it. Then again, Who knows, maybe it was stolen. I still have an old electrician model, with two blades and a phillips head, good knife. But I think it's time for me to replace that old backpacker.
tokr72 Cool, Victorinox sells a model called the Hiker that would be very similar to your non-serrated Backpacker, as it doesn't have the serrations either.
WeAllJuggleKnives That might be the ticket. For some reason, I want the wood saw again. I do like the serrated blade on that one you got there. Happy belated new year brother.
The 'W' is pronounced 'V' in the more German influenced parts of Europe so it's pronounced Venger. S.A.K.s are tough to not collect, fairly regularly I have to stop myself and just stick to my ''Camping'' model (great knife) though I have my eye on the Hunter XT.

I have to agree with you this is one of the better knives that they make. What I dont like and dont get is why the hell they put corkscrews on most of their knives I've never ever needed or saw one used ever.
Victorinox Swiss Army Evolution S111: non-serrated locking main blade, clip small blade, Phillips, SAK style can opener, locking screw driver, awl, 85 mm, part of the Victorinox Delemont Collection.
I don't think most people realize how handy a reamer/awl really is, especially if you're a homeowner. Between the awl on my Leatherman and the one on my super tinker I didn't have to break out the drill and bit kit for anything from hanging pictures to installing the toilet paper and towel rack in my bathroom. I don't know if the wenger awls would work so well though because they are more like a pick that doesn't have the angled grind to it like the LM's and Vics.
Swiss army camper. Has main and pen blades can opener bottle opener screwdriver corkscrew with mini screwdriver awl and a saw also has a place to store a pin.and of course toothpick and tweezers. WILL NOT leave home with out it.
Okay but that's kinda cheating as these are really collectors' items now as they're no longer made. So the nearest current equivalent to it is the Hiker right? My first choice for toolset too. I really wanted an Victorinox old-style BW (German Army) knife like the one I lost years ago, but these haven't been made for years and are only available second hand if you can find one, and then it will be v. expensive if it's a VIctorinox and not other contractor BW knife, and probably so worn down as to be not much use. I do look from time to time on ebay Germany and other German vendors but can never find a good one. So the Camper would have been closest to that toolset, but I prefer to have a Phillips instead of a corkscrew, so I went for the Hiker.
Good video if you had an original quote real Swiss knife", you wouldn't have to carry the leather man with the Swiss knife because it would have everything right there
The Super Tinker is my current favorite. My other favorite would be the Wenger EvoGrip 18, but I rarely use a wood saw. The Victorinox scissors, two blades, Phillips and flathead screwdrivers are awesome to have. Wenger knives are still very useful and cool to have even though they aren’t manufactured anymore.
Why won't they let us choose whatever tool-set we require on a single knife ?
Owen Joseph King : You can assemble your own in places like the Victorinox flagship store in New York or in Brunnen, Switzerland. However, there are so many combinations that you might just end up making something that already exists. There are countless of them to choose from on the market.
They probably discovered not enough people would pay the premium for that to offset the cost at the factory for offering the service.
I think in all fairness they have every permutation of blades/tools covered in their product range. Many models differ in only one respect.
You sound like the Count from Sesame Street: "Nine! Nine types of cutting!!!"
Explorer plus is my favorite. I think it is the smallest one with inline Phillips so I can still have the corkscrew for the eyeglass screwdriver. The Climber with the stayglow scales and the evo s18 with locking blade are the runners up.
Spartan lite is thinner and has inline phillips

I love my SAKs, but let's be honest for a change... ain't nobody "sewing leather" in the field in 2020.
You can make a hole in your leather belt
i can punch myself with it if im bad.and sew "my " leather
I actually like the somewhat uprgaded awl that comes on the alox models. You can use it to make holes into things, sctrach or mark things with the tip, use it to open knots and also use it for stuff you would't want to use your knife blade since the awl has an edge itself.

What a great knife!!! And the leatherman completes it very well. Not too bulky either
I wonder if sharpening the flat head screwdriver for use as a chisel would be successful... mine is out rider and rider (out)

Great score! I got a second one on Amazon a while back, too, but not for such an awesome price!
11-types of cutting...cool! My Wenger Camping has a cork-screw instead of the Phillips-driver. I'd rather have the Phillips. I plan to convert the cork-screw with the Victorinox mini-driver. Great review! Ty.
My favorite is the Tinker. Happy New Year!
On my small tinker I left the large blade straightedge and serrated my small blade, makes more sense to me
My backpacker is an Eddie Bauer edition and has Backpacker blade etching but is a completely different tool set. Also the main blade locks.
I prefer a corkscrew for untying knots, but the unsharpened awl on this would be good for knots, too.
I agree I find it extremely dumb that victorinox models with two blades are always the same. I have a small tinker and I’m planning on serrating the secondary small pen knife. Why they don’t do this from the get go I have no idea

This is equivalent to the Victorinox Hiker, except that the Wenger has serrated blade and the Vic has a straight edge blade.

RealBushMonkey that's true, almost like scoring a tile!
exactly!
Got a part serrated highlander in the mail. 👍🇨🇭 Also, I love the outside accessible hole punch on the Wengers. Sometimes I almost bust a nail on my Victorinox trying to reach around the corkscrew to the get to awl.
Great model for sure, and SHARP! Never really considered the serrated blade idea, but it does make a lot of sense

John Montgomery Hey. I just snagged one here in Australia. It is mint too. $75 AUD- so about $50 usd.
Does that particular one have a "pin hole" at the joint of the Phillips screwdriver??
If anybody is wondering it's a Wenger Evolution 16. Don't get messed up with the Wenger EvoGrip 16.
Happy New Year Israel !
Thanks for this review. Love that serrated blade. I personally wish the knife came with Alox handles.
Needs to be plain edge on the main blade. Otherwise a good choice. Like a Tinker with a saw.
Excellent knife but I have just one gripe, the clip blade should be as big as the serrated blade, what's your opinion buddy?
Wenger tools are generally thinner than Victorinox. That is how they keep the SAK thinner.
My fave is the Serrated Spartan (AKA Weekender).
Happy New Year! Great channel.
Weapons Education Thanks, likewise!
Oh, by the way, My new Victorinox so far is one of my Fav's bush pocket knife, The blade and Saw are big, which I like, and the Screwdriver locks when you push down on it for safety, neat Huh ?, , ,
I'm confused even tho this is a Wenger it's still a Swiss army knife ,correct. Just made by a different company than Vic right ???
Wenger was a Swiss company, so it is still a Swiss Knife.
Fantastic knife! I didn't know it.
i sharpened the flathead screwdriver on my classic sd, no regrets there
Damn, do every knife come that sharp out of the box? I've tried a SwissChamp which was very sharp, but not butter smooth as this one. But i'm waiting for me WorkChamp to arrive, which i'm guessing will be like butter 'cause of larger size, and more focus on the knife part 'cause of the locking blade.

I know wegner is now part of victorinox,
But this model was made when wegner was a different company?
In that case is it still a swizz Army Knife ?
I prefer the Teton full serrated. Same knife, but scissors instead of a saw.
I have got one and love it....awesome little knife
Well can't find it for sale online. I'm wondering if there's a victorinox knife that is the same build.
I pronounced it with the V once and Poland surrendered. :D
WeAllJuggleKnives nice!
Not always.
Yuri Danylko There's loads of 'not always' in every language, Wenger is definitely pronounced Venger.
+jelkel25 My language feel, and my first language is dutch, though I had german lessons, says no on this one but what do I know :p
Is the Leatherman squirt only available online?
Defect or Design Issue‽
Feedback appreciated.
The tip of the scissors in my new EvoGrip 14 does not lay fully into its layer channel, creating a slight protrusion above the surface that can prick a finger or catch fabric when in pocket.
No Armadillo feeder??? Also I like the Vic Explorer the best myself.
I have to agree with you this is one of the better knives that they make. What I dont like and dont get is why the hell they put corkscrews on most of their knives I've never ever needed or saw one used ever.
I have one but serrated blade no clip point blade that is a nail file and cleaner instead and a corset
Great video, i love my vic hiker. I favorite over my alox farmer just because of the tweezers.
Like the video's, have you ever seen the very small screwdriver esp. for Victorinox on the cork screw?
A very cool knive that I would love to have
Victorinox Swiss Army Evolution S111: non-serrated locking main blade, clip small blade, Phillips, SAK style can opener, locking screw driver, awl, 85 mm, part of the Victorinox Delemont Collection.
I have a Hercules model and its great🔪
I need absolutly a cisor
I've never been out somewhere saying shit I wish I had a reamer...
really wish they made a tinker without the reamer or small knife and put a saw in it that would be fantastic
Happy New Year to you and the family!
Digs Fossils-n-Knives You too!
I did some research and found out that my Wenger is NOT a Backpacker like the blade etch says but a Traveler model with locking blade.
Awesome, I think a Wenger Traveler was the first Swiss knife I ever owned.
I'm getting a lot of "not currently available" messages from different sites. Do you know where it's available?
Love the knife. But that awl on the farmer is just better for me. Its made better n in a better position. Love the videos though
Swiss army camper. Has main and pen blades can opener bottle opener screwdriver corkscrew with mini screwdriver awl and a saw also has a place to store a pin.and of course toothpick and tweezers. WILL NOT leave home with out it.
The Sportsman is my favorite.
Is this your EDC knife? If not which one would you recommend?
Did you ever get that protool knife ?
Happy new year bubba!
Always carry a farmer + Gerber dime. Not so impressed with the dime, scissors are iffy.
This is a great knife indeed
The compact and the weekender
nasty paper skills lol I suck at the paper tests lol
very good and practical review! Thanks!
Okay but that's kinda cheating as these are really collectors' items now as they're no longer made. So the nearest current equivalent to it is the Hiker right? My first choice for toolset too. How hard are the serrations to resharpen?
TacticalTimmy12 if you don't have ceramic rods, really fucking hard
It's basically a victorinox hiker with fancier blades.
Great SAK. The Commander ís my EDC tool. Cheers
explorer is my fav
Good video if you had an original quote real Swiss knife", you wouldn't have to carry the leather man with the Swiss knife because it would have everything right there
where did you buy it from
What would you recommend if you want a longer blade
The Victorinox Hunter
Just search vic/wenger collection for set of tools you need...
What is the name of the knife?
This is baisically the hiker, except from the serrated blade
