Heck yes - I remember being a little kid fishing at a lake for stockers with a weight and worms. Old guy next to me was like "hey kid, add this marshmallow so the worm comes off the bottom and the trout can see it". Tried that and BOOM - Fish onnnn baby!! 🎣 Also taught me the clinch knot.... Cool how much a stranger is willing to teach a kid trying to catch fish 🤙
We learn from our elders. I was given some great advice when fishing for Walleye by a 90 yr old man fishing next to me. I must've been 19 at the time. We became fishing buddies until he passed on.
Always Whether I’m catching or someone else is…(almost) the same to me. But, people on their first fish or 1st in a minute…..that’s better. Always willing to hand my pole over.
I just had an experience like that two weeks ago Leif. This 10 year old named Dallas came up to me, asking a bunch of questions. He hung out with me for a good two hours, and I got to show him some of my stocked trout tricks and tips. I hope he'll remember that. Angling is a gift that must be passed on to the next generation
I like putting the marshmallow on first and slipping it over the eye of the hook, then I put the worm on, for me it always worked better and caught more trout
I grew up in Idaho fishing the Big Wood River and Silver Creek. By the eighth grade, my friend Alex Stewart and I knew those two streams better than anyone in the valley. I always bait fished with stream's edge worms, grubs, grasshoppers, or I fly fished. In the 1950s guys like Ernest Hemmingway, Gary Cooper or Ted Trueblood might be fishing just down the riverbank from you and the average rainbow trout was 1 to 3 pounds with five and even occasional eight pounders shaded up somewhere deep in a hayfield slough. These two streams were idyllic trout streams with pools, riffles, and large rocks in center stream hiding big feeders with cottonwood forests and hay meadows running up and down both streambanks. Later on, in my adult life, as more and more people moved to Idaho and the quality of fishing went downhill, I learned about marshmallow fishing for trout in reservoirs and lakes. I couldn't believe it! After all the years of my youth spent fishing for trout on the Big Wood River, I was very disillusioned at my first sight of a marshmallow on the business end of a trout rod. The very idea that the wily spotted trout, that cruiser of the deep who turned down many an elk hair caddis in my early days would sucker for a marshmallow was absurd to me...
@Dylan Linville I want simply talking about fishing in one spot all day. I was saying if you didn't cast out as far as you wanted. Leave it. You can catch fish
I mean not really. Trout generally school up so if you don't find the trout your fishing for water droplets. Similar to catfish, they will bite all day, if you can find the fish 😁
Hi💕, hope you’re having a good day, I hope you don’t mind me spreading the gospel with you, so here it goes just wanted you to know that God loves you and wants you to experience peace and life in a better way and eternally. But bc we disobey God and go our own sinful ways we r separated from Him,but Jesus Christ lived a perfect life for you & died on the cross and rose from the grave for you,He paid the penalty for our sins and bridged the gap between God and us so if you trust Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and receive Him by personal invitation you receive that free gift and eternal life, have a blessed day, byee💕
Great video man. Hell i was doing this in the early 90’s for stockers. I went to using worm blower add lil air to my worm with garlic scent. It kills them every time. Love all you do for outdoors men. Keep it up bro!!
I have been fishing for Rainbow and Brown trout for a week at a place called Castlewellan lake in the north of Ireland. This lake is stunning . While fly fishing one day I used a quality fish finder on the boat it proved this lake has a insane amount of trout but its over 3 mile in length and over 50 foot deep. Until recently I had not fished using a bait ( worms ) in years. I tried floating and at different lengths for the dropper ... no joy . Castlewellan lake can be a hard place to catch trout but I will return on Monday and I will fish the bottom using your method with the marchmellow. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent video Marlin, you guys do such a great job on these tutorials. Thank you on the comment about our cut tag ends, everything we can do to protect the environment that we fishermen call home is worth the effort. 500k subs for 2020!!
I like to tie to a 3-way swivel, then a long leader to a weight, and a shorter leader of about 12-18" to the bait, so the rod tip is more direct to the hook, the fish doesnt have to move the weight for you to detect the strike.
Cant wait to try this I've only used plain ol nightcrawlers in my local lakes and have very little success hopefully this well help me nail more of those little beauties
You should consider using a sinker slide. This is a plastic hollow sleeve with a clip that allows you to easily change weights using the clip attached to the plastic sleeve. The line goes through the sleeve. It the same thing that you are doing with the slip weight.
I watched you make the scented marshmallows what is the best colors and scents for trout and salmon?Would these baits work ice fishing for Lake trout rainbows Brook trout???
I like to put my weights onto the swivel. Also use clip swivels so you can change leaders and baits easy. If I can't get them to hit worms, I'll normally work through a bubble with a 5 foot leader and just work different baits.
A little trick i learned when i was kid. Instead of putting the marshmellow on the hook, put it on the line above the hook. Just press the line half way through it and pinch it closed. then slide down.
I use a size 6 hook and a half of a night crawler. Then I put on a mini marshmallow on. Put a size 4 split shot up the line about 20” and I slayed them today. Only one at the lake to catch fish.
A carolina rig off the bottom is exactly what I use to catch trout in lakes! The only thing I would suggest is to get some cheap fishing bells online to throw on the end of your rod so you don't have to keep your eyes glued on the rod.
Question about your hook choice. I fish the Watauga and South Holston for trout here in Northeast TN. Using nightcrawlers is very effective this time of year in some of the slack water runs when my flies just won't get a take. I've found that using hooks similar to your choice allows the trout to swallow the bait deep and guarantees a hookup. However, I'm 98% catch-and-release. Letting that hook be swallowed also guarantees a dying injured fish. I've started using a circle hook for my worm fishing. (I'll try adding a scented mello now!) It seems to allow for a deep take of the bait but pulls back up and hooks into the jaw/lip areas at hookset rather than down in the throat. I've found I'm getting perhaps 30% fewer hookups on a take but am killing 0% of my catch. I'm okay with that ratio. Your opinion?

As someone who's just starting to learn how to fish, these videos are helping a ton! Can you do a video showing how to throw spinners farther when fishing for trout? I went fishing for trout recently and we were trying out spinners (they were very light) and obviously did not manage to throw them far. If we add a weight to it, the spinners would go further but would ruin the presentation; would you add a split shot in this case or what would be your recommendation?
LuckyChance try to go with a bigger spinner trout are not shy to run down a bigger presentation sometimes we use full size crank baits and catch 6 inch trout but if your adamant about using those smaller spinners I think your best option would be an in-line sinker they are a lead with a swivel on each end with 2 to 3 ft off the end to the spinner.
Also if fishing withbait like how the man in the video is doing there is no need for a sliding sinker and beads and swivels, a split shot suffices for most trout unless they are super super wary but I have never had any problems with it and I’m fishing for Wisconsin rainbow trout which are super spooky.
Anyone have any experience with the uglystik ultra light rod? I really like uglystik al want to stick with it but not sure if it might be to floppy and how well it casts?

Question about your braided line when you say 6 lbs are you referring to 6 lbs diameter which I think is 20 lbs test for braid is that correct or is it 6 lbs test i have been fishing for years and have learned a lot of great stuff from your vidios keep up the great work
How do you know when you have a bite when fishing off the bottom like this? Do you just sit there and stare at the end of your rod? How do you know your worm is floating after you cast it? I've never caught a fish on powerbait or worm off the bottom but would like to give it a shot.
You can watch your rod tip for it to bounce, you can hold it to feel the bite, or you can buy clip on bells to attach to the tip of your rod. I do this so i can walk a few feet away and cast lures in another direction. Marshmallows float because they're so light. They will keep small worms off the bottom easily, which is why he was cutting his crawlers in half
an old timer just showed me this rig a couple weeks ago in Pleasanton,CA. Do you ever use circle hooks? I want to like them in theory, and i use them but i am so used to eagle claw baitholders
I've noticed trout striking at my bead protecting my swivel, is there a clear/ translucent bead or black out on the market? This also means I should egg instead of worm lol.
I let the mellows get "almost stale", and then seal them tight. I then string the mellow before the worm up to the hook eye. You can give a heavier cast an not worry about loosing the Mello this way. Obviously, once it gets wet, you're gunna have problems.
Brother you're rigging em totally opposite than my method lol I put the marshmallow on the hook first, then I place my European nightcrawler last. Plus Id make sure my hook point and barb isn't showing. I don't think trout are that stupid. They still have eyes and brains you know. They've been around for so long, so I wouldn't really wanna be underestimating them. I think they're smart enough to figure out which is safe to bite, and which is not safe to bite on. If they ever see that sharp point with a menacing barb next to it, they might feel hesitant trying to take a bite out of it! It might even take you longer waiting for a bite, unless if it's moving or swimming lure target that you're reeling in which the fish can easily miss seeing that menacing hook point with a barb since they're so fixated at the moving target. But when you have a still floating target like that, any fish with pure common sense can easily see that hook point and barb that's sticking out. Besides, I don't scent my marshmallows anyways, and I still catch Rainbows and Coastal Cutthroat here in WA state. Don't get me wrong, I think the way you set it all up with that Dave's Tangle/lead Free weight, fishing bead, fisherman's knot, hook size ets. are all greats tips. I personally never heard of the Dave's Tangle/lead Free Weight, but I will be using em soon thanks to your Idea. I just don't agree on how you hook your worm first, and the marshmallow last, with that menacing hook point & barb that's sticking right out like a sore thumb lol
Addicted Fishing no I understand and I appreciate those videos. But I was just assuming you guys actually fished after making this video so why not just add the video of you guys catching fish. Even if it's like a speed run clip at the end. Idk just a suggestion. Thanks for listening though 😊
I always thought about worms as if they were humans, screaming and writhing in agony as enormous titans cut us in half and jab giant metal rods through our heads only to be eaten by leviathan amphibious beasts. Man I love fishing.
Used this setup all my life. But instead of cutting off the leader, just pinch on or off removable sinkers. Also, just use colored marshmallows. You don't need to "make" your own...
Heck yes - I remember being a little kid fishing at a lake for stockers with a weight and worms. This also works on wild steelhead. I use the small anise flavored marshmallow though.
Love it -gonna try with my own scented mellows!
I remember using this set up when I was younger and saw ur vid now I want to go back this way I forgot how good it was to fish with m&m set up
Caught 4 yesterday with a little chunk of worm and a yellow cheese flavored marshmallow
Marshmallow and worms was my all time favorite fishing in the California Lakes. I prabably caught most if the biggest trout off of them and catfish.
I used this tip this morning and it worked perfectly thank you!!!!
Tried it today and it worked💰
Thank you for sharing the technique other than the air injection method.
Grew up fishing for brookies and rainbows with plain ol earthworms and i'm bettin they still work great 😁
Of course this was in creeks also
I use a worm threader to get the worm on the line. I leave about 1/2 inch of the worm off the hook. Then, I put the marshmallow on it.
Keep up the good work and love the trout videos. 👏👍
My go-to rig for boat-less winter bank fishing on Lake Roosevelt up here in beautiful Kettle Falls WA.
You should consider using a sinker slide. This is a plastic hollow sleeve with a clip that allows you to easily change weights using the clip attached to the plastic sleeve. The line goes through the sleeve. It the same thing that you are doing with the slip weight.
What do you guys think about using high visibility braid with a longer leader?
If u use a snap swivel for the sliding weight, u can swap out weights without cutting the line
The whole point of a sliding weight is for it to slide when the fish bites it that way the fish doesn’t feel the weight...
Don’t open my fishing secrets, I’m feeling good when I hook up fish , but nobody around me😂
Marshmallow and meal worm worm great on the muskegon in michigan

I like it man
I watched you make the scented marshmallows what is the best colors and scents for trout and salmon?Would these baits work ice fishing for Lake trout rainbows Brook trout???
Jeff Cummings Anything garlic is killer for trout. I really like the blue color the best.
Orange and green work well too!
Foam Earplugs work to , usually just stick a sewing needle through it and put it 5 inches away from the worm
i have been using that method for years
That's something I'm going to have to try
What's your favorite trout fishing bait?! 🤔
Air injected Night-crawler. Just enough to "lighten it up". Drifted for sea run cutts.
Pro cure clam necks then cut into worm size strips
Anything with garlic!
Favorite trout bait is going to be Berkley Power Egg on top of the hook eye and tip it with Nightcrawler. 👌🏼💕
I.d like to see you use that set up in a river for steelhead bottom bouncing using the worm and marshmellow
I like to put my weights onto the swivel. Also use clip swivels so you can change leaders and baits easy. If I can't get them to hit worms, I'll normally work through a bubble with a 5 foot leader and just work different baits.

best go to i do in the winter lakes is 2 mallow and a home made single egg, the trout in fish lake on stevens pass go ape shit for that combo
(I'll try adding a scented mello now!) I've found I'm getting perhaps 30% fewer hookups on a take but am killing 0% of my catch. I'm okay with that ratio.
Your opinion?
This vid reminds me of a rather deep lake that is said to have trout in it..just might have to give the crawler and marshmallow a go 😁
A rather deep lake that is quite dead as of recently I was there yesterday. However that rather deep lake is supposed to get some big Bois soon
I do the same with power bait too. you can inflate the night crawler if you need more buoyancy
Jim Chavez Powerbait worm combo is deadly too!
That's my favorite hole/spot on that lake

When I was a kid I caught my first trout ever right next to the spot you're in on that big ass log
What flavor marshmallow you useing
Can I just use a mono main line instead of braid + fluorocarbon?
Can you finish off your videos showing if you catch a fish? Thank you
dannylobo209 Sometimes we do, this day was about teaching, not catching.
Addicted Fishing no I understand and I appreciate those videos. But I was just assuming you guys actually fished after making this video so why not just add the video of you guys catching fish. Even if it's like a speed run clip at the end. Idk just a suggestion. Thanks for listening though 😊
dude i live 5 min from that lake marlin 🤐 any ways ibeen getting skunked and they just stocked it , i killed it this summer did you catch anything??
Easier to use sliding snap swivel then add or reduce weight as needed
Did you catch any?
Can this be use with a bubber?
All I get with this setup is sunfish if I have power bait eggs I get stocked trout I've tried different lakes.
Where do you get the beads from?
amazon, bass pro, literally anywhere that sells fishing tackle, even wal mart
why worm and then marshmallow shouldn't it be marshmallow above the worm?
Can you send me a link for your sweatshirts

I always thought about worms as if they were humans, screaming and writhing in agony as enormous titans cut us in half and jab giant metal rods through our heads only to be eaten by leviathan amphibious beasts.
Man I love fishing.
Tie marshmallow in spawn sac and you won't loose it when you cast
Used this setup all my life. But instead of cutting off the leader, just pinch on or off removable sinkers. Also, just use colored marshmallows. You don't need to "make" your own...
