    This was a great video! It really captures why it's so difficult to criticize someone like Amy Schumer. It's happened before where I've expressed my dislike of her performativity only to get hug boxed by a bunch of guys going "Yeah and she's so fat and ugly". It's like people's inner misogyny is crouched in a corner, just waiting to feel justified enough to be unleashed. It really is depressing that the only way to be universally liked as a woman celerity is to be white, docile, and traditionally attractive. As a black queer man, I can relate, the gay community has some really nasty parallels.
    I love your work, thankyou for being so thorough and thoughtful!

      Thank you so much, I appreciate that.
      And yes, you're absolutely right, I know men who are very leftist and progressive in so many areas but as soon as they're approached with a woman they don't like, even if it's for good reason, the misogyny comes out so quick and it's really disheartening.

      They'll say "it's fine, this particular person deserves ridicule" as if loads of people who happen to share the same physical traits and have done nothing worth being judged for aren't hearing it. Amy Schumer doesn't care if you call her fat, but other people who might care what you think will learn what you think of people like them.
      I used to be pretty bad about this when I was younger. I needed to consciously unlearn it, and considering it from that perspective helped me.

      I left a link from Vox in the sources that actually interviews some psychotherapists who specialize in CSA. I wish I hadn't glossed over that too much, what I meant to say was that there were people on Reddit who were misremembering what was said in the book and were overblowing some of the details because most people hadn't actually read the book, they just heard from other people online and then it went through this telephone machine where people started accusing her of doing things that weren't actually said in the book. I have her book and it's definitely weird and I feel she shouldn't have even put that in her book honestly, it was just widely inappropriate for her to mention that, and she clearly thought it was a fun normal story, when it wasn't.

    Great analysis! I only ever knew bits and pieces about these two women before this video, which are now much better contextualized.
    I really agree with your point about how we've done so much work redeeming women maligned in the 90s and 00s over the last years, but somehow never apply that to women currently in the ire of the public. Still blows my mind that Free Britney and the reevaluation of Monica Lewinsky took place basically simultaneously with the complete and undeserved evisceration of Amber Heard
    And yeah, as you say. There's valid criticism to both women, and many other people, but it will get lost in a sea of misogyny, and somehow we need to get better at removing the latter so the former can be addressed, at the same time as it would be nice if celebrities with haters didn't use those to ignore valid things their fans are saying

      I really can’t stand all the hate Amber Heard gets. Because she wasn’t the perfect victim, then she couldn’t be a victim. No one is perfect, but I absolutely believe she was abused and deserved justice that she never got (and probably never will).
      Also, I feel bad for Winona because she spiraled down right after her relationship with Depp but she’s maintained that he is a great person. I wish she could get some justice too and not feel she has to hide behind a bland pr statement. But, after what happened to Heard, I don’t blame her for staying silent.

      @LilShopofAli  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Well, it was always being compared to that because it has a similar format as Sex and the city in that it’s centered around four women who are friends living in New York and dealing with relationship issues and stuff.

    • @CanelaAguila
      @CanelaAguila 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      Also damn I had completely forgotten about Amy's instagram rants, I was so angry about them at the time because it felt like she was the epitome of "people who usually agree with what I think, even if just superficially" who suddenly were on the complete opposite side. I did not really known her and youve given a lot more context about her, but I still feel that adds a layer of complexity to the topic. The morality and enforced integrity of the left, compared to the right who embrace every person in their messed up pipeline, is a challenge in the "culture war". White feminism is still better than no feminism, I'd say, but where does that leave us? Who do you stand with on the picket line? If Amy Schumer suddenly starts defending trans rights, what do we do with all the other stuff when we kinda need anyone we can get there? You touched on it in this video and I would love to hear more of your thoughts on that topic. I struggle with it a lot

    • @LilShopofAli
      @LilShopofAli  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I appreciate your comment thank you, and yes, I empathize with that struggle. I did watch season 5 of Inside Amy Schumer and she does seem to support trans people and gay people from what I can gather. There were two sketches that somewhat addresses transphobia, although not in a groundbreaking way imo. I think that's admirable, considering the anti-trans rhetoric that is pervasive in our society right now, but Amy Schumer has a tendency to say very off-color and racist things, but thinks because she attended a BLM protest, that that somehow discounts her previous statements. I think the fact that she doesn't have that self-awareness is why people like her can be dangerous. If we're willing to sidestep glaring issues in peoples politics because they happen to support a group of marginalized people who are very vulnerable in our society, I feel we will continue to run into problems like this. And her openly platforming marginalized people, like she deliberately did in season 5 in a way that previous seasons did not do, is what helps Amy feel she doesn't need to learn anything or grow.
      That "first they came" post she made on IG I feel shows how she views solidarity. To me it showed her entire ass. She only supports other communities performatively not genuinely. I really don't like to think that way about people, I always try to see the best in people, but Amy just keeps disappointing me and continues to do things that don't surprise me. And one of her first instincts when faced with valid criticism is to lean on the "people just hate me because I'm a woman" card and while that is half true, it's very frustrating, especially when people like her are celebrated for being feminists.

    It seems more of a class issue then a race issue here. I mean the race thing does come into play in certain things. But there are plenty of white feminist that aren't racist. This feels more like a detachment from real life due to a life of affluence. They are both from well to do families, nether one has had to ever reply for food stamps or save up to pay bills or basically try to struggle to make rent. These are truely out of touch people that it wouldnt matter their skin color in the end, this feels more of a class issue honestly. I won't deny that there aren't well-meaning white people that basically are hipster racist, and i like that term alot. I just think that the classism should also be addressed in subjects like this too

    • @LilShopofAli
      @LilShopofAli  4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree. I might do a follow up video on things I forgot to discuss in this video. In my body positivity video there’s a section on choice feminism and girlboss feminism which are basically tied to white feminism, and I also share a clip from that same Matt Bernstein video on Amy Schumer, where Broey talks about how white feminism doesn’t necessarily just apply to white women who are feminists.
      I do think class is a huge part of it, but I don’t think race is totally separate because one of their biggest issues is their casual racism and I just don’t personally see how you can be a feminist and be casually racist and not think that that would have an impact on your politics and how you see the world. That’s why that joke she made about “all my black friend” was unintentionally hilarious because we know damn well she does not have any black friend(s) lol.
      But yes, I agree and I should’ve clarified that.
