I agree with the latter; however, the point is that a statue is meant to pay tribute to a great person. The very existence of these statues stands in defiance of this country's values and its very existence.
The statues don't represent slavery to people in the south. Take it from someone who lives in the south, the majority of us see it as pride in where we are from. Even if the statues were erected to honor those who fought to defend slavery, the statues symbols have changed to those who live near them. Those who have a problem with them usually live hundreds of miles away from them. If you don't like them, don't visit them.

Statues are erected of people who represent the values and virtues of the community. This is and must be a high bar. People are not perfect. However when someone is going to be immortalized in a statue, they must be judged by the totality of their actions. Now and later as society evolves. For example, in Canada the first Prime Minister and father of Confederation had many statues throughout Canada and he was held up as a great man and leader. When it was exposed that the also supported cultural genocide his statues were removed form public spaces. Because this is not a person that Canadian children should revere and model themselves after. Are Robert E. Lee's morals, ethics and actions the values that children should model themselves after?
Nobody lives a "hero" life, its about a few moments of heroics that make them immortal in memory. Nobody has and will live the perfect balance act of a life. Your example of Canada's first prime minister, imagine a kid looking at this statue of him and the kid asks his father about it and his father replies that's our first prime minister. I'm pro the statues and here is why. Say that for example a mother is out walking her kid, he ask who is that guy ( pointing at the statue ) and mom tells him. Later ( even years later ) the boy google or in a library check up this "guy" and well that way he learn the history. Hiding away the history just never ever ends well and it is about transparency. It wasn't just a statue. young girls and boys met up to make their feelings known about the statue of Robert e. lee, a man who lived between 1807 to 1870. an american, later confederate soldier and later general of his army of northern Virginia. they were protesting because of the extreme thought, actions and beliefs the were stuck to the statue. Robert agreed with the social system of slavery, whereby, beginning as a racially equal system, america was different in that in a second it became very apparent that white slaves had the chance to work their way out but the dark skinned were pressed into a life of misery, squalor and death with no end, mens dicks were cut off, families separated at the auction house and foremen whipped them for however long they wanted. They were protesting because they were intimated by the thoughts and feelings of slavery pressed on the statue.

I understand peoples angst about the Confederate flags and statues and such but slavery was legal and rewarded under the Stars and Stripes and there were a great many northern slave traders who profitted handsomely from it. Also, you can’t say that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were just men of their times while not giving Robert E. Lee that distinction also. To me the statues and monuments of bygone times serve as reminders. Better to not erase and forget. It was a sad and horrific period of time that led up to and included the Civil War and the South paid the brunt of the policies championed by the immigrants from mostly western Europe since the country was established. Statues are erected of people who represent the values and virtues of the community. This is and must be a high bar. People are not perfect. However when someone is going to be immortalized in a statue, they must be judged by the totality of their actions. Now and later as society evolves.
For example, in Canada the first Prime Minister and father of Confederation had many statues throughout Canada and he was held up as a great man and leader. When it was exposed that the also supported cultural genocide his statues were removed form public spaces. Because this is not a person that Canadian children should revere and model themselves after.

These statues are monuments of history. As they say, the one who tries to erase history, history ends up erasing them. This idea that one has to shelter kids from our history is dangerous.

Say that for example a mother is out walking her kid, he ask who is that guy ( pointing at the statue ) and mom tells him. Later ( even years later ) the boy google or in a library check up this "guy" and well that way he learn the history.
Hiding away the history just never ever ends well and it is about transparency.
Even the bad things has a place in history and it has happened and therefor talking about it or leave it out there gives people a chance to learn about it.
For example, in Sweden King Karl XII/ Carolus Rex (Charles XII) born in 1682 and since 1930 the neo nazis has used his statue in Stockholm and him as a figure for the far right/ neo nazis, they go there every year the 30th November to idolize him and spew their nazi BS. So should Sweden remove this part of their history just because idiots like the ones in Charlottesville use it to get a voice?

But that was a wrong of its own age, and can't be judged by our own standards. If that was wrong, and it was, that doesn't make everything they did wrong. We can't negate all the good that people did. The heartfelt lives they lived in the light of their day. If they were evil, if they cruel they can be judged by the light of their own day. If they were compassionate, and decent that can be judged the same way. Would you take that away from them because of the society they were born into? That holds true as well for slaves, as for slave owners. Would you discount their lives, and passions, and deaths? Would the good of any age do that? My ancestors were not Nazis. They fought Nazis.

Chris you hit the essence of the problem. When a decision was made that the atrocities perpetrated throughout our history must stop which side did we choose to take and at what cost. It is our history that some resisted change but it is nothing we should look to with pride.

It wasn't just a statue. young girls and boys met up to make their feelings known about the statue of Robert e. lee, a man who lived between 1807 to 1870. an american, later confederate soldier and later general of his army of northern Virginia. they were protesting because of the extreme thought, actions and beliefs the were stuck to the statue. Robert agreed with the social system of slavery, whereby, beginning as a racially equal system, america was different in that in a second it became very apparent that white slaves had the chance to work their way out but the dark skinned were pressed into a life of misery, squalor and death with no end, mens dicks were cut off, families separated at the auction house and foremen whipped them for however long they wanted. They were protesting because they were intimated by the thoughts and feelings of slavery pressed on the statue.

I understand peoples angst about the Confederate flags and statues and such but slavery was legal and rewarded under the Stars and Stripes and there were a great many northern slave traders who profitted handsomely from it. Also, you can’t say that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were just men of their times while not giving Robert E. Lee that distinction also. To me the statues and monuments of bygone times serve as reminders. Better to not erase and forget. It was a sad and horrific period of time that led up to and included the Civil War and the South paid the brunt of the policies championed by the immigrants from mostly western Europe since the country was established. Established by theft, genocide and slavery. Don’t forget the Stars and Stripes when pondering this.
