Stories from Italy with Jhumpa Lahiri, Ann Goldstein, Jenny McPhee, and Michael F. Moore

Listening to these people who supposedly translated italian novels or short stories made me clear why italian books aren't very much published in english.
Commenting something as
“It describes Italy in a certain period from a sociological point of view”
or that the translator didn't understand those “strange parties” described, or that
Italians do "strange things" and write them "in a strange way" speaks volumes about what an excessive specialization is useful for, pretending to have a knowledge which, without a right sensibility cannot lead to the real “Sense” (meaning both real understanding and the skill of “sensing” something)
The poor guys over there among the public tried, unsuccessfully, to understand why the hell should they buy this book,
or what would they learn from it, which kind of experience would they have reading it, getting no real or decisive answers for that.
The point is that “"Getting into the voice" means being able first of all
to listen,
then, if it is possible,
to understand what you are translating.
Or you will inevitably end imposing your voice.
