One of the most achingly beautiful pieces of music ever written by any composer. If I had my way, this entire movement would be the music played at my funeral.

It is difficult to conceive how genius was Beethoven.

In my opinion, he has only a few competitors as the greatest man who has ever walked the earth. In architecture, there's Gaudi's Sagrada Familia, in poetry there's Dante's Divine Comedy, and in music there's Beethoven's Late Quartets. What isolates Beethoven particularly is that he wrote an awful lot of other music that may actually be as great as the Late Quartets, or almost in the same sphere.

I know much of Beethoven’s music but not the quartets. Wow, this is heavenly!

No, this is Beethoven’s love saying farewell to his immortal beloved because it just must be the way it is. He has to let her go, but his love is just so deep, it is so very difficult. This is what the music is saying and it really breaks my heart everytime I hear this movement. It is so deep, so tender, but yet it’s a farewell. A farewell that will never be forgotten. True love is the most painful thing a person can experience, let alone he had to go through the pain of being a deaf musician. The music is so deep into expressing his life & his love for this special women that he cannot be with. I have the feeling that he has realized life’s circumstances of knowing himself as the reason why this cannot become a possibility. That’s why he noted “It Must Be”. And in the music there is a moment of “why it has to be this way” and you can feel the pain being expressed in it! Thank God, how he has wrote this music, centuries later we can hear what he had felt at that moment. His music is recorded throughout history. This one truly has that coded message in it! It is special because of it, and it’s based on his immortal beloved. What else can it be? It is so very clear how the music is written that this is the case and I am about 100% convinced of this.

Aside from that, though, he had liver cirrhosis. He knew he was on his way out. This was Beethoven musically making peace with God.

I first heard this on R3 in the morning without knowing what it was. I appreciated its quality straightaway.

Oh lord, this is just gorgeous. I'm a pianist, but I don't think there's any sound to touch the beauty of a string quartet, especially one with this kind of talent. Thank you so much for sharing. Bravo!

I love the fact that DSQ conducts their own "little" festival. And then share it with all of us. Thank you so much, Danish String Quartet. You are the next generation carrying on and experimenting with venue, protocols, musical forms, etc. You are consummate muscians still growing and it is a joy to witness your journey.

Very beautifully performed and very emotional. Thank you very much for this performance. I have heard it said that you either love the early, middle or late quartets, but no one loves them all. I am particularly fond of the late quartets, but I do love them all. I learned to love Op. 127 when I was just 12 years old. The late quartets were like science fiction to me as a youngster.

Uno de los momentos más sublimes de la música. Sin duda, el genio de Beethoven fue concebido por Dios para regalo de los hombres.

Why does there always have to be that one person in the audience coughing? This video was perfect other than that.
