I was there with my mom....we went to see Affirmed at the saddling barn, they were there 30 min before the race...Affirmed was way over on the left, alone in the far stall--I told my mom it looked like he was asleep, and on my left against the outer railing was Laz Barerra, who said "He no be asleep pretty soon"....Affirmed ran big for Pincay---never was beaten under the Pirate, although was DQ'd in the Travers.
My dad would often take me to the track and was lucky to have seen Affirmed in 78. Got to see Cauthen on Affirmed in 79. I was only 15 at the time and living in Baldwin Park. Now live in norther Cal, but still make it to the Santa Anita Derby each year. Great memories! Thanks!
Too bad Pincay didn't ride Affirmed in the Triple Crown. Those races with Alydar wouldn't have been as close. But then again, the rivalry probably wouldn't have gone down in history the way it did.
Hey man they still would been in Belmont. Affirmed was sick very bad two weeks before Belmont and ran sick in Belmont!!! That why when alydar got head he pulled ahead cause he smart horse and used his heart!! My dad said he wasn't supposed to win

The good old days!!! We were stabled right across from Ron McNally..we loved Think Snow..ran good..but only finished 3rd...
My favorite rider, Laffit Pincay Jr. rode him this day.
