You picked a great theme for this episode. This is definitely a flash point between the citizens and the authorities. I felt that there could have been a representative from the side of the administration who could balance out Vinay and Pooja's views. For instance - what may be perceived as a harmless gathering of intellectuals from the inside, may be perceived as an incendiary mob from the outside. The only way to know for sure is to get on the inside. Think about the Cubbon Reads issue. What may be a harmless Secret Santa event on the inside, can be seen as some sort of commercial exchange of nicely packed goods. To know that it is not, you need to know what secret Santa is and possibly what a book club is. If you watched the video, the people confisticating the books are being very polite (speaking in Kannada). Take the case of food vendors not being allowed. Where do you draw the line? Would authorities have to allow food trucks in too? How about a mobile McDonalds? Would they be allowed to market their wares? How much is too much? Are we ok with Cubbon park also being an amusement park? Take the simple matter of walking counterclockwise. One reason people do it is to beat foot traffic, so you aren't boxed in by slow walkers ahead of you (generally senior citizens). This allows people to walk faster - but it also means that they bump into people coming from the other direction. Like I said - great theme and nuanced too. I'm a Bengaluruean, and I feel like I understand the viewpoint of both sides. The administration grappling with the growing number of citizens using the spaces and having to accommodate their diversifying needs, and those of the citizens who see our parks as third spaces where we can be ourselves.
Well laid out argument! The only point I don’t like in Bengaluru parks is the closing down of parks in office hours. If PDA is unbearable to administrators, then they should use AI based CC cameras to monitor that. Closing down public spaces for the lack of administration is unacceptable.
Very true. We can see RSS people doing activities in parks and play grounds causing inconvenience to others who want to use it for playing. So why don't we see any regulations for them.
Agree with what you have said, except vendors inside parks and street vendors. Allow vendors inside the park if you can provide dustbins and effectively prevent littering, can this be done? Streets are for vehicles, footpaths are for pedestrians. Agree? Fix the footpaths, fix the roads, remove illegal parking. Maybe implement something like hawker markets for vendors.
You forgot to mention the potluck event that was held along with secret santa event. Large gathering of people with food combined with civil sense of "educated" masses. Who's going to clean up that mess?
I studied in MES jayanagar and the parks behind the school is where we used have our lunches. What nonsense. It's just another space within our country which citizens are being regulated on. We have turned the clock back and become a more regulated state with no civil liberties.
1. Despite clear law on taking pets inside all public parks, parks do not let you take a pet inside 2. There’s already few women inside grounds and parks, with unnecessary restrictions, there’s even fewer women. What are they supposed to do? Go to the nearest mall?! And the country wonders why and brands people unpatriotic if they leave the country. 😐
usless debate nothin is gona change in India untill and unless its directly beneficial to the politicians. Its messed up. While u can I would suggest people to move out of India
I actually loved this segment of the episode

You cannot read and discuss a book in a public place, however RSS Shakhas can be held in public places!

RSS shakas involve playing too. So, tough to regulate that

RWA are controlled by the agents of local officers who meet and plan how to avoid who criticise them

No mass gathering inside Cubbon Park, these clubs can book halls if they want & leave our parks.
Complicating on pretexts
Peak absurdism
