    We crossed the Barton aqueduct bright and early one summer morning back in 1986. In those days, the aqueduct was left swung open to the ship canal overnight and we arrived before it had been swung to allow Bridgewater travellers to cross. As far as I remember, the crew swung it at 8:00 in the morning, so we were able to watch the whole process. The most extraordinary part of it was that the whole span was lowered into a socket once it was lined up with the Bridgewater canal to seal the joint, which meant lifting (and lowering) something like 2300 tons of span...

    The Barton Swing Aquaduct is world famous because it's the only one ever built in the world. It swings with the water in it still. Two blocks swing closed to block the water off, off on the canal and one on the bridge itself both ends. Then the bridge swings open full of water. The whole thing takes about 45mins to an hour as they open the aquaduct about half an hour before ships come through. Also the lighthouse is an actual working lighthouse. Apparently the person who owns it has a passion for them so he built it in his garden. It only lights up on special occasions (I have never ween it working though)

  • @LKHNET
    @LKHNET 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Rumour has it that the Lighthouse came around because the bloke who owns the house there wanted to build a granny flat in his garden but couldn't get planning permission. However he managed to use an old loophole in planning regs says that permission isn't required for a lighthouse. Whether they were pulling my leg or not... !

Great when the road bridge gets stuck open in the hot weather because its expanded with the heat. They have to get the fire brigade out to pump water from the ship canal to make it contract again. Seen that loads of times too.

    Its not the prettiest canal but there's a lot of industrial engineering history associated with the Bridgewater, and there's no locks. from what I can remember the swing bridge work much like the Anderton lift... except it uses single "lock type"' gates on land and bridge sides to block the canal water from gushing into the MSC and then turns still full of water... which is a lot of tonnes of water!! It looked a lot better painted last time saw it though. It operates nearly as quickly as the road bridge, which used to be the only road crossing before Warburton until the M60 was built. Worsley is nice.. used to live near there.

    The Worsley Delph levels were opened up about 15 years ago or so, as they wanted to survey the condition of the underground levels. What used to happen was coal tubs were floated into the level and after a short distance, they would reach a series of inclined planes which would take the coal tubs down to different levels, the coal tubs were floated to near the coal faces on underground canals that stretched as far out as beyond Walkden (about 11 miles). The survey found the levels were in good condition although they didn't investigate the deep levels. Go the other side of the hill by following the M60 and you find the Irwell Valley where the Manchester, Bolton and Bury canal which is currently being restored, here you will find the Wet Colliery which is where James Brindley made water travel uphill! This colliery was another where a canal ran into an underground colliery. This isn't something peculiar to the Manchester area as the original Harecastle canal tunnel had canal adits where coal tubs were floated down from an underground wharf at the Goidenhill Colliery, Brindley seemed to be an expert at building underground colliery canals. When Telford built his replacement Harecastle Tunnel, it cut across the coal canal adits and sealed them but even today they are still there just behind the tunnel wall and that is where the orange ochre water in the T&M canal comes from.

Our current tech revolution isn't as dramatic because we have been eased into with the steady march of technology over the last 30 years, and the presentation of technological marvels in entertainment and media since the 1950's. Good video, thanks! That poor dog. Maybe she was watching the people and tried to avoid them, totally missing the dog. I searched for the lighthouse on the Bridgewater and there were several references to it on a Bing search. I retired google because of all the ads and tracking and moved to bing because at least you earn points on Bing, much like frequent flyer miles. Anyway! I suspect you also did a search but this seemed to be the most informative article on the lighthouse, rather than quick mentions of the lighthouse in Bridgewater Canal articles. Sorry about all the google ads on the page but, well, that’s why I quit google. More is more, as they believe. salford.media/article/history/the-monton-lighthouse-part-1-r607/

    Of course there is the odd self centered numpty to deal with but that is why we walk on the land side of the path so we can shove them in. That said, there are also dog owning nupties who just don't keep their dogs under control and/or don't invest time, energy and training. Look a Jono's dog. She is hugely obedient off lease, She even sits down automatically when a cyclist approaches.
    These wonderful assets of the UK are there for all to use and under no circumstances should the actions by a very few on both sides of this question be used to restrict one or the other from enjoying them. Besides, it would likely fall under a law that was a) difficult to enforce and b) not worth enforcing in terms of human resource commitment. In the end it really about a growing generation who are always in their own worlds. They isolate themselves in their tech devices to the point actual human face to face interactions are few and far between and they just are not aware or don't care about others. It is all about them,

      I am a believer in cyclists having to have registration and 3rd party (including dogs!) insurance... just like cars. There used to be a British Waterways by-law that prohibited riding of bikes on towpaths... didn't stop me when i was a kid cycling home from school though.
      If the trendy eco freindly CRT wanted to gain popularity, which it needs, then they should make it a rule.. "buy a permit to ride the towpath" ... then they would either gain income from permits or lessen the amount of bikes. I thought car drivers were inconsiderate until I discovered the 21st century Britain, lycra-clad, eco warrior, hi-speed, towpath cyclist.

    Manchester Evening News article:
    "It may be 30 miles from the coast but it has been Phil Austin's labour of love - his own lighthouse on the banks of the Bridgewater Canal in Salford. He has spent three-and-a-half years working on the lighthouse and it has so far cost him é20,000. But his 36-foot tall weekend retreat, overlooking the moorings at Monton, has been worth it. Phil, 64, sold his canal barge to pay for his folly which will soon be fitted with a light to cast a beam on Monton Green".
    Simon Allen, the landlord of the nearby Barge Inn and one of Phil's close friends, said: "I'm still trying to find out the actual reason behind it."

    Very clever technique to get comments... The Monton or is it Worsley Lighthouse ? depend on your view, is a faux "fake" does have a light used on special occasions " but which what is considered special and by whom?'. Commonly known as a "Folly" typical European phase for thing of actual no use... a rich persons quirky idea maybe. The builder " Phil Austin" a local did a BBC interview about it some time ago.... and its been use to campaign against a local incinerator ( given the smell they produce I'm not surprised) .... see you got me looking... just interested on finding out about something quirky... bikes and tow paths, hmmm I have no view as roads really are not safe either, plus dogs not controlled again hmmm, dogs need freedom to exercise and being on a lead is essential in many circumstances, however tow paths away from traffic should be a place to stretch their legs.... as long as nobody was hurt or injured then all's well i guess... really enjoy the blogs, something to wail away a few minutes in an evening while waiting to come back to Europe.....

    The so called controversy re cyclists on the towpaths caught my attention. On public roads here in the part of Canada in which I live are arrogant pains in the backside who have never bothered to read the law. However having put a number of cruises behind is on the Thames, K & A and the GUC I have a somewhat more Christian view of cyclists.
