Its a wonderful surprise to see Herzog Zwei, one of the most underrated games and IMHO one of the greatest Megadrive/Genesis games. Me and my brother used to play it for hours, having epic, long battles. Its such a brilliant and innovative game.

You might want to hold off anyway for that rumoured pro switch version and I believe theirs meant to be a 2DS like version of the switch that would make it cheaper to have, that's if all of the rumours are true. Yeah VR makes me want to get one too now.

No, I'm talking about the original arcade versions though. GA Revenge of Death Adder has never seen a home port or official licensed emulated released. Shadow Dancer (arcade) only made it to the Master System and if the Genesis hardware was not powerful enough to do the arcade version justice than that certainly wasn't either. I also prefer the original version of Golden Axe over the Genesis port. It's a solid port, but many things were cut back from the Sega 16 board original. The extra level was nice, but very short.
ALL THE YES!!! Scud Race never got a home port, and i'm still pissed that Sega never ported Daytona 2, but licensed that Daytona 2000 remake to Hasbro.
A Saturn mini likely won't happen for many years, if at all. It would require significantly more hardware power than the current lower priced ARM7 boards that many of these Classic Editions and Minis are using in order to keep their prices in the $50 - $100 MSRP range. There is a version of the Saturn emulator, Yabuse, which runs on the Nintendo Switch, and even that struggles to emulate Saturn games at a playable speed.
@@videogameobsession Yeah I just don't see a Saturn mini ever happening tbh, the best we can hope for are digital re-releases and even that's a few years off for most of the Saturn games, like you said, not all its games run well on current emulators.
@@Indiana-r9b Yeah. Puyo Puyo has already been getting more support overseas over the past several years, so re-releasing those games isn't anything special anymore. Not like Panel de Pon coming to SNES Online, though. That's pretty much the original version of Tetris Attack, since we can't get the localized alternative now.
When it comes to stuff like Sonic etc, then yeah, but with the SGEA mini and hopefully future mega drive games, they start expanding on that awesome 3rd party line up, like Vampire killer, Contra hardcorps, rocket knight and so many more greats.
When it comes to Dreamcast games, I think it would be a no brainer to include titles like Sonic Adventure 1 & 2, Jet Set Radio and Space Channel 5. It would also be cool to have Sega Rally Championship 2, Sega GT, Shenmue and Crazy Taxi. But if they can also do third party games, then I'd like to see Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Metropolis Street Racer, POD Speedzone, Rayman 2, Tokyo Xtreme Racer 1 & 2, Trickstyle and V-Rally 2. But all that is probably asking too much and would be impossible with licensing issues and all that. Sadly, I don't know enough Saturn games to make personal requests, but I wouldn't mind seeing some of the good Sega CD and 32X games added to the mix!
Unfortunately, Sega is good at going out of their way to get it wrong. When they succeed they succeed but when they fail, oh boy do they fail. Retro games are hotter than ever, they have to realize the opportunities here. But I’d rather see a Saturn Classic or compilation than stand alone releases. Apparently M2 are also working on Konami's Castlevania collection (and probably by extension the Contra collection as well) so that probably also delayed the Ages games a bit too.
@TheSeventhForce Some news sites are claiming M2's the one behind the Castlevania collection at least (like GameSpot, NintendoInsider and a few others, though they don't list a source that outright confirms it). The Arcade one was "Powered by Arcade Archives" (says this both on the site and in the game's menu) though so they did work on that one (even if it's just ports of the ones already available on PS4 but with some sound errors / lack of some of the options) but the lack of arcade games on the Castlevania collection might suggest someone else did that one (since Hamster don't seem to have done home console ports and only arcade game ones).
I had much fun replaying Phantasy Star. Those Quality of Life updates really make this game better. I love this series. Man I would love a new Outrun in modern consoles

That's, sadly, unlikely - the rumour is that Sega lost the source code to all three Saturn games, the only surviving source code being for the Windows version of the first game (the rumour stating that's why that version of the first game, and not the Saturn version, was included with _Panzer Dragoon Orta_ )
Indeed, this is a fact. That said, I have come to believe in the power of restoration. Either by emulation, or rebuilding some key aspects, I wish that they would revive those three gems somehow. M2 are gods the fact that they added 8 player split screen to Virtua Racing is insane! I hope Sega starts doing Saturn and Dreamcast games and I really hope they announces physical compilations of the Sega Ages games for Switch!
Virtua Racing on Switch seems like the definitive version as far as I can tell. The only thing missing are the extra tracks. But I guess they wanted it to be like the arcade original, so that's fair enough.

I like how the "Phantasy Star" soundtrack in this version is the Yamaha-enhanced version from Japan. It sounds much better than the original North American soundtrack from "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection." For those who've never played "Phantasy Star," it is a test of your patience as Sega Lord X says. Be lucky you can play it on this version with a map, as I used graph paper to draw the dungeons. It's a wonderful game and is a must-play if you love JRPG's.
@@steveswanson6280 You can choose between the two soundtracks. The Japanese FM soundtrack sounds a lot better, but I do have nostalgia for the PSG soundtrack that I grew up with.
I’m personally not bothered by the speed of release I would rather quality, definitive versions as opposed to just a bunch of ROMS on a compilation. The switch will be around for a long time, plenty of opportunity to get a great lineup happening.
I love Virtua Racing visuals so much... these flat color polygons aged very well and the Switch version looks gorgeous. I wish they bundled the PS2 remake of Phantasy Star with the Master System original. I'm a bit concerned with the future of this series though, Nintendo tend to close their online services after a while, just like they did with the Wii and WiiU virtual consoles. You don't know for how long you'll be able to keep them... SEGA still holds a few winning cards that desperately need to be set on the table. I'm thinking of all these Model 2 and Model 3 games, most of them never got a home release and for once they'd also be ahead of emulation as most aren't correctly emulated either. It's not often that you can beat emulation, it would be a mistake for SEGA to not try to be the first to offer perfect or enhanced versions of these games to the public.
With the Genesis Collection already on the Switch, the main focus should be the Saturn and Dreamcast. Virtua Fighter, Virtua Cop and Daytona USA all come to mind as instant purchases for me.
Along with Sega Rally Championship, NiGHTS sampler, and bootleg sampler, Astal was one of the first games I played on Saturn, as well as one of the first post-16-bit games I played. The crystalline world of Astal's Quartilla significantly inspired my own work. It's criminal that Astal is still a Saturn exclusive to this day. Hopefully that changes soon.
Ok... Sega Rally is an arcade original, and not a Saturn original. Very complicated, including the fact there's licences to use in the game. Best options for Saturn exclusives are: > Clockwork Knight 1 and 2; > Burning Rangers; > Bug! and Bug! Too; > Mr. Bones; > Shining Wisdow; > All three Shining Force III (+ Premium Disc?); > All three Panzer Dragoons; > Shinobi Legions (all three regions); > Fighters Megamix.
Sega releasing definitive versions of their "glory day" games on the console of their biggest former rival. Crazy times. But yeah, the Saturn is so complicated that not even Sega themselves can figure out how emulate it and they made the damned thing. Its a testament to how complex it's design is vs how simple the PlayStation's is. I remember back when PlayStation emulation was all but perfected while the system was still on the market. A copy of Virtual Game Station, a Gravis Gamepad Pro and a modest PC was enough to play almost everything for the system at full speed, and this was back in 2000.
Phantasy Star was my first RPG. At the time I had no clue that I had to keep asking about the "secrets" to get the passport. It took me 2 months to figure that out, but by then Alis was so leveled up that it made the rest of the game a lot easier.
I'd love to see Operation Ghost and Virtua Cop 3 since those never had home ports. The Switch pointer controls would be perfect for them. Die Hard Arcade would be pretty sweet, too.
Would love to see more ported arcade games like Daytona, Virtua Fighter 5, AfterBurner, Outrunners, Star Wars. And more 3rd party Genesis titles like Aladin and Contra.
I’m so happy they’re doing this. M2 are the masters of ports like these. I’ve already put many hours into Thunderforce IV and Outrun. Really looking forward to Virtual Racing, Space Harrier, and HERZOG ZWEI!!
I hope that they let M2 port the unreleased Space Fantasy Zone to their arcade emulator, similiar to what they did with Fantasy Zone II: Tears of Opa-Opa. They could make it an unlockable for Space Harrier if you own both Space Harrier and Fantasy Zone.
I'm so happy Gain Ground came to the switch, I used to play it a lot when I was really young but my Mega Drive broke when I was 8 (in 2008), I did know how to use an emulator not too long afterwards but I completely forgot the name of the game and thus haven't actually touched the game in 11 years. I'll be picking it up as soon as I can and I'm sure I'll have a lot of fun with it.
Yeah, as great as the M2 versions of Genesis games are, they're still just Genesis games, seen in a dozen collections over the years. There's literally dozens of Sega arcade games that are ripe for the picking here. Cool Riders, Outrunners (no good home ports), Planet Harriers, Revenge of Death Adder, GunBlade NY..the list goes on. I'd probably buy each and every one of these on Switch. Yeah, I can play a good chunk of Sega arcade games through MAME or other Model 2 or Model 3 emulators, but I'd like for them to be available legally.
I couldn't agree more. I really want to see M2 port all of the best Model 1, 2 & 3 titles and give them the same love and attention they've lavished on Virtua Racing.
I have a feeling that Sega is working on something , we don’t know about. Since the announcement of Streets of Rage 4, i wouldn’t be surprised if they bring sequels to games like Altered Beast, Golden Axe and Shadow Dancer.
Another great episode, man. I was not aware these titles were out on Switch. Virtua Racing looks really, really amazing; even better than the arcade, I think. I agree with you: Sega needs to bring back many Saturn games to modern consoles (and PC), and both OutRunners and Golden Axe TRODA need a proper port.
This would never happen but imagine an Astro city arcade console, with green lights and the look of the arcade unit but in console form. It comes with a wheel, arcade stick, and gun. And it has loaded on it all of the great Sega arcade games including ones like Outrunners, Scud Race, and other games that never got ported anywhere, as well as all the other great games you would expect. It would be a luxury console and cost like $550 or something. I think it would be the coolest thing ever but of course I know it’s an absolute pipe dream
Couldnt agree with you more about Alex Kidd. Regarding Saturn, that system was so hard to develop for, and now emulate, that realistically I dont see it happening (as much as I'd love it).
What I'd really like from Sega on Switch is a Skies of Arcadia port with the extra content of the gamecube version but the original unmolested soundtrack of the dreamcast.

My guess for a Saturn game would be Nights into Dreams as it already has a Steam version out. While I'd be happy to see Nights my ideal release would be Fighters Megamix, Virtua Fighter 2 and Last Bronx.
You hit it right on the head. I would love to see Outrunners, Golden Axe 2 arcade and even Wing War or any of the 90's arcade titles. M2 has done justice to Power Drift and Gunstar I just want to see them grab up the "lesser requested" games and titles that are the pinnacle of why I love Sega. Hell, if I never get a chance to buy modern, physical versions of any of these games at least we know M2 is on a roll and keeps them affordably available.

The tips for fantasy star helped a ton and I was having a lot of fun until I had to figure out the secrets shit. Walking back in the shop multiple times did not click with me, I thought I had to beat a dungeon or visit the hidden town in the forest until he'd give me the secrets. Very frustrating but at least the virtual menu had the answer in the "are you stuck?" Area lol
Sadly ended with zero Saturn or Dreamcast games, admittedly I've probably played or got Sega's best 1st party DC games but would have loved to have played the Saturn. I'll guess maybe not enough people downloaded them. That phantasy star bit was very handy though,

What annoys me on the Sega Ages brand, is that 80% of the releases are Japan and console exclusives. Hacking my 3DS was the best decision, i got experience all the amazing arcade, SMS and MD 3D Classics made by M2, and the two Sega Fukkoku Archives that never left Japan.
Outrunners is a favorite of mine. Local and online multiplayer and a little emulation for the LCD talking face that was on the cabinet would be great. Really wanted to see M2 make a 3D version of that on the 3DS but not a chance perhaps. Outrun 2019 would be great also which is a personal favorite though many don't care for it's odd boost mechanic.
14:38 You're forgetting the PC Windows port of the Saturn version, and I agree the home version would be the one to port (though upgrading it to 60 fps would be nice I guess) since it has the car tuning options and the unlockable Lancia Stratos, not to mention the soundtrack sounds way better with actual guitar.
I definitely want to see them start getting into Saturn and Dreamcast stuff (although Dreamcast may make more sense as actual HD remasters). I'd like to see the Shining games (especially Force 3), Panzer Dragoon series, and Burning Ranger especially. For Dreamcast, the obvious dream games are Shenmue and Skies of Arcadia. We'll see what happens, but those are definitely my hopes.
Great video Sega Lord X, as always. TBH I’ve pretty much lost trust in Sega’s re-release strategy by now. Between the crossover of compilations released of disc/cartridge, this intermittent Ages lineup on Switch, the Sega Forever thing that just feels like it’s disappeared, Sonic 3 no appearing on anything for quite a while and the constant promises of Saturn games coming (that’s been said for years now) you just can’t tell what the overall intention is. I’ll always be interested in their re-releases, getting Virtua Racing on Switch is awesome and it’s the first time I went with the Japanese eshop rather than waiting, but I think the time has passed of hoping for a sensible release strategy and getting many of the old Sega games we really want.
It certainly has been a trying experience waiting for these older Sega IP's to appear. There are so many that you just want to scream WTH are you guys doing? I refuse to believe that a Saturn Classic Collection, or a Sega Model 1/2/3 Arcade Collections disc would fail to sell well. I think Sega is passing up a real opportunity to make their fans truly happy.

M2 are gods the fact that they added 8 player split screen to Virtua Racing is insane! I hope Sega starts doing Saturn and Dreamcast games and I really hope they announces physical compilations of the Sega Ages games for Switch!
Virtua Racing on Switch seems like the definitive version as far as I can tell. The only thing missing are the extra tracks. But I guess they wanted it to be like the arcade original, so that's fair enough.
@@Cyberbrickmaster1986 They looked into adding the 32x tracks but that version was not computable with the original game and they would have had to recreate the tracks from scratch!

I like how the "Phantasy Star" soundtrack in this version is the Yamaha-enhanced version from Japan. It sounds much better than the original North American soundtrack from "Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection."
For those who've never played "Phantasy Star," it is a test of your patience as Sega Lord X says. Be lucky you can play it on this version with a map, as I used graph paper to draw the dungeons. It's a wonderful game and is a must-play if you love JRPG's.

@@steveswanson6280 You can choose between the two soundtracks. The Japanese FM soundtrack sounds a lot better, but I do have nostalgia for the PSG soundtrack that I grew up with.
I’m personally not bothered by the speed of release I would rather quality, definitive versions as opposed to just a bunch of ROMS on a compilation. The switch will be around for a long time, plenty of opportunity to get a great lineup happening.

I love Virtua Racing visuals so much... these flat color polygons aged very well and the Switch version looks gorgeous. I wish they bundled the PS2 remake of Phantasy Star with the Master System original. I'm a bit concerned with the future of this series though, Nintendo tend to close their online services after a while, just like they did with the Wii and WiiU virtual consoles. You don't know for how long you'll be able to keep them...
SEGA still holds a few winning cards that desperately need to be set on the table. I'm thinking of all these Model 2 and Model 3 games, most of them never got a home release and for once they'd also be ahead of emulation as most aren't correctly emulated either. It's not often that you can beat emulation, it would be a mistake for SEGA to not try to be the first to offer perfect or enhanced versions of these games to the public.
With the Genesis Collection already on the Switch, the main focus should be the Saturn and Dreamcast. Virtua Fighter, Virtua Cop and Daytona USA all come to mind as instant purchases for me.
Along with Sega Rally Championship, NiGHTS sampler, and bootleg sampler, Astal was one of the first games I played on Saturn, as well as one of the first post-16-bit games I played. The crystalline world of Astal's Quartilla significantly inspired my own work. It's criminal that Astal is still a Saturn exclusive to this day. Hopefully that changes soon.
After seeing Virtua Racing I can only hope that Virtua Fighter 2 will be next on the Switch.

Ok... Sega Rally is an arcade original, and not a Saturn original. Very complicated, including the fact there's licences to use in the game.
Best options for Saturn exclusives are:

> Shining Wisdow;
> All three Shining Force III (+ Premium Disc?);

Sega releasing definitive versions of their "glory day" games on the console of their biggest former rival. Crazy times. But yeah, the Saturn is so complicated that not even Sega themselves can figure out how emulate it and they made the damned thing. Its a testament to how complex it's design is vs how simple the PlayStation's is. I remember back when PlayStation emulation was all but perfected while the system was still on the market. A copy of Virtual Game Station, a Gravis Gamepad Pro and a modest PC was enough to play almost everything for the system at full speed, and this was back in 2000.
Phantasy Star was my first RPG. At the time I had no clue that I had to keep asking about the "secrets" to get the passport. It took me 2 months to figure that out, but by then Alis was so leveled up that it made the rest of the game a lot easier.

I'd love to see Operation Ghost and Virtua Cop 3 since those never had home ports. The Switch pointer controls would be perfect for them. Die Hard Arcade would be pretty sweet, too.
I want a physical release for all the sega ages games. So much love was given to those classic games, M2 did an amazing job.

I wish Hellfire and wardner would come out on one of the sega ages packages. Hellfire was my favourite shootemup on the mega drive.

I’m so happy they’re doing this. M2 are the masters of ports like these. I’ve already put many hours into Thunderforce IV and Outrun. Really looking forward to Virtual Racing, Space Harrier, and HERZOG ZWEI!!
I hope that they let M2 port the unreleased Space Fantasy Zone to their arcade emulator, similiar to what they did with Fantasy Zone II: Tears of Opa-Opa.
They could make it an unlockable for Space Harrier if you own both Space Harrier and Fantasy Zone.
I'm so happy Gain Ground came to the switch, I used to play it a lot when I was really young but my Mega Drive broke when I was 8 (in 2008), I did know how to use an emulator not too long afterwards but I completely forgot the name of the game and thus haven't actually touched the game in 11 years.
I'll be picking it up as soon as I can and I'm sure I'll have a lot of fun with it.
I wish virtua racing had expansion dlc with 32x and Saturn tracks/cars.
A just want arcade ports not the console ones, I'm sick of buying them, the model 2 and 3 stuff we never got at home would be a start
Yeah, as great as the M2 versions of Genesis games are, they're still just Genesis games, seen in a dozen collections over the years. There's literally dozens of Sega arcade games that are ripe for the picking here. Cool Riders, Outrunners (no good home ports), Planet Harriers, Revenge of Death Adder, GunBlade NY..the list goes on. I'd probably buy each and every one of these on Switch. Yeah, I can play a good chunk of Sega arcade games through MAME or other Model 2 or Model 3 emulators, but I'd like for them to be available legally.
I couldn't agree more. I really want to see M2 port all of the best Model 1, 2 & 3 titles and give them the same love and attention they've lavished on Virtua Racing.

Since the announcement of Streets of Rage 4, i wouldn’t be surprised if they bring sequels to games like Altered Beast, Golden Axe and Shadow Dancer.
Fighting force is kinda like streets of rage 4, superb game.

Another great episode, man. I was not aware these titles were out on Switch. Virtua Racing looks really, really amazing; even better than the arcade, I think. I agree with you: Sega needs to bring back many Saturn games to modern consoles (and PC), and both OutRunners and Golden Axe TRODA need a proper port.

Golden Axe: The Revenge is the one I really want from the arcades to consoles, with online co-op.
This would never happen but imagine an Astro city arcade console, with green lights and the look of the arcade unit but in console form. It comes with a wheel, arcade stick, and gun. And it has loaded on it all of the great Sega arcade games including ones like Outrunners, Scud Race, and other games that never got ported anywhere, as well as all the other great games you would expect. It would be a luxury console and cost like $550 or something. I think it would be the coolest thing ever but of course I know it’s an absolute pipe dream

Couldnt agree with you more about Alex Kidd. Regarding Saturn, that system was so hard to develop for, and now emulate, that realistically I dont see it happening (as much as I'd love it).
What I'd really like from Sega on Switch is a Skies of Arcadia port with the extra content of the gamecube version but the original unmolested soundtrack of the dreamcast.

I'm excited to see Herzog Zwei. I played that a lot as a kid. I just remember getting mad because I sucked at it.
You hit it right on the head. I would love to see Outrunners, Golden Axe 2 arcade and even Wing War or any of the 90's arcade titles. M2 has done justice to Power Drift and Gunstar I just want to see them grab up the "lesser requested" games and titles that are the pinnacle of why I love Sega. Hell, if I never get a chance to buy modern, physical versions of any of these games at least we know M2 is on a roll and keeps them affordably available.

The tips for fantasy star helped a ton and I was having a lot of fun until I had to figure out the secrets shit.
Walking back in the shop multiple times did not click with me, I thought I had to beat a dungeon or visit the hidden town in the forest until he'd give me the secrets.
Very frustrating but at least the virtual menu had the answer in the "are you stuck?" Area lol

Sadly ended with zero Saturn or Dreamcast games, admittedly I've probably played or got Sega's best 1st party DC games but would have loved to have played the Saturn. I'll guess maybe not enough people downloaded them. That phantasy star bit was very handy though,

That's some good advice, about the Fantasy Star difficulties. Some of the younger Switch players may close the game out, in frustration

What annoys me on the Sega Ages brand, is that 80% of the releases are Japan and console exclusives. Hacking my 3DS was the best decision, i got experience all the amazing arcade, SMS and MD 3D Classics made by M2, and the two Sega Fukkoku Archives that never left Japan.
Switch Sonic 1: It's the 3DS but now there's the Drop Dash and Mega Play Arcade.

Outrunners is a favorite of mine.
Local and online multiplayer and a little emulation for the LCD talking face that was on the cabinet would be great.
Really wanted to see M2 make a 3D version of that on the 3DS but not a chance perhaps.
Outrun 2019 would be great also which is a personal favorite though many don't care for it's odd boost mechanic.
14:38 You're forgetting the PC Windows port of the Saturn version, and I agree the home version would be the one to port (though upgrading it to 60 fps would be nice I guess) since it has the car tuning options and the unlockable Lancia Stratos, not to mention the soundtrack sounds way better with actual guitar.
I'd love to see galaxy Force 2, the arcade ported to the switch, also Panzer Dragoon.

I definitely want to see them start getting into Saturn and Dreamcast stuff (although Dreamcast may make more sense as actual HD remasters). I'd like to see the Shining games (especially Force 3), Panzer Dragoon series, and Burning Ranger especially. For Dreamcast, the obvious dream games are Shenmue and Skies of Arcadia. We'll see what happens, but those are definitely my hopes.

Great video Sega Lord X, as always. TBH I’ve pretty much lost trust in Sega’s re-release strategy by now. Between the crossover of compilations released of disc/cartridge, this intermittent Ages lineup on Switch, the Sega Forever thing that just feels like it’s disappeared, Sonic 3 no appearing on anything for quite a while and the constant promises of Saturn games coming (that’s been said for years now) you just can’t tell what the overall intention is. I’ll always be interested in their re-releases, getting Virtua Racing on Switch is awesome and it’s the first time I went with the Japanese eshop rather than waiting, but I think the time has passed of hoping for a sensible release strategy and getting many of the old Sega games we really want.
It certainly has been a trying experience waiting for these older Sega IP's to appear. There are so many that you just want to scream WTH are you guys doing? I refuse to believe that a Saturn Classic Collection, or a Sega Model 1/2/3 Arcade Collections disc would fail to sell well. I think Sega is passing up a real opportunity to make their fans truly happy.
