My future wife and I each invited one of our friends to see Top Gun when it was released. It was a blind date for our friends! My friend Andy was quite a nerd, and he announced after the movie that he was going to become a Naval Aviator. We laughed at him. He DID become a Naval Aviator and flew Greyhounds and Vikings. Andy retired in 2013 as a Commander and now flies for an airline.

My father was an RIO in Phantoms. He also went through the Fighter Weapons School, which I didn't know until Top Gun came out. He used to describe the film as one of the greatest comedies ever made. Oddly, he loved The Final Countdown, probably because that was supposed to be unbelievable.
In one of the trailers for Top Gun 2, the camera comes up over Point Loma and Fort Rosecrans cemetery. You can see my parents' graves in the shot.

I was in 6th grade when the movie came out and lived and breathed the movie and the soundtrack. I went to a Catholic grade school and once they found out I could play the piano by ear fairly well, I was tapped to play the piano for several of the weekend church services. One particular Sunday, whatever hymn I was playing ended about halfway through Communion and I had to improvise. I played the Top Gun Anthem to fill the remaining time. Although I got compliments on what was thought to be such a nice sounding piano instrumental piece, the only ones who had any idea what I had done were a few classmates who happened to be there. Once in awhile if I run into one, I’m reminded of when I played the Top Gun Anthem in church!

There are a few ex-fighter pilots I follow on TH-cam (obviously including Ward). But I always wonder, if when they complete their "Fini-flight" or, final flight, is it an emotion of sorrow, because you'll never 'strap the airplane on' again? Or do you guys pretty much get it out of your systems by the time your last flight day comes?

As a former airdale and Enterprise crewman, I saw Top Gun with several buddies who were civilians and knew nothing about the navy or naval aviation. while they were sitting in their theatre seats going gaga, I am just shaking my head over the sheer cheesiness of it all. That said, the aerial cinematography was stunning, and the footage of flight ops on the big E in the film's opening brought back a lot of memories of operations in the Indian Ocean during my time aboard.
It is funny how Matthew Modine refused to act in a film that was about the military, and then 4 years later portrays a B-17 pilot in Memphis Belle.

Roger the cheese and the Hellywood hypocrisy. I made it through the first few minutes of the flick before fighting off regurgitation at the sheer childish representation of the Navy, then returned the VCR tape back to Wally World. I'm sure it had some good photography, etc. but it sure didn't represent the Navy I knew back in Nam. Still haven't seen the whole thing, and have no desire to do so.

As you said Mooch, Cruise got sick in the back seat. He told the story on BBC's Top Gear.
As told by Cruise on the show, he was feeling sick and as he reached down to the leg pocket to get the bag Bozo loaded up the jet in the positive, and Cruise couldn't sit up to take care of business. When Bozo unloaded the airplane Cruise asked, "why did you do that" and according to Cruise Bozo replied, "well, they don't calm me Bozo for nothing".

You definitely get a blockbuster movie. Now it's up to the sequel to surpass the domestic and international box office success of the original. There's one fun fact about the movie. The scene where Val Kilmer coughed the word "bullshit". Everyone in the hangar laughed spontaneously. It was an adlib but director Tony Scott liked it and kept it in the film.

Hey I am sure as a Marine your Dad's eyes rolled so hard in his head it almost knock him out, the 1st time he saw John Wayne's the Sand of Iwo Jima after being in the USMC for a few years 🤣 . But his very Marine common sense attitude, hey, that's Hollyweird kick in and he had a good laugh . For some crazy reason I never saw Sands of Iwo Jima till I was a senior in high school and was interested due to family history .My mom's bother Jimmy was Marine Scout on Iwo Jima and was killed on Iwo a couple of months after his 19th B day. I saw Sands after reading Helmet for My Pillow , The Old Breed, Good Bye Darkness and Semper Fi Mac and a few more fairly unromantic books about Marine experiences in the Pacific War and Korea. Soooo Sands of Iwo Jima came off as post WWII soap opera schmaltz with 10 minutes of the battle for Iwo Jima tack on as a after though . I wasn't impressed, with time my feelings have mellow and now view Sands of Iwo Jima as one of John Wayne's numerous C- to B- grade movies he made before he became a big box office star . BTW glad to hear you went over the wall from the hospital and are now home .It's always great to be on the mend and getting health again .

November 1986 I started training at Delta Air Lines after a nine year USAF tour as a T-38 instructor/flight examiner and C-5A aircraft commander. In my Delta class was Brett Zeitz, a top gun instructor who made the bar scene in the movie. But in the class after mine was Greg Dishart who was one of the “Mig” pilots in the F-5. In those days we used to train in the same little building on the same floor as the new flight attendant classes. When word got around about Greg, who looked like a movie star anyway, during the breaks on top of each hour, a flock of sweeties would swarm him in the hallway. It was something to see! We all did 35 years at Delta. Unfortunately we lost my good friend Brett Zeitz in June 2020.

Mooch, you mentioned Chuck Heatley. If you look closely at his Dress Whites in that scene, he has an Air Force Commendation Medal after his Navy Commendation Medal. He earned that while flying at Tonopah as a MiG pilot with the 4477th Test and Evaluation Squadron "The Red Eagles."

To me the real star of the movie is the f14 tomcat, ot is a beautiful, sleek and fast jet, I am in awe of them every time I see one, now they are only on museum ships.

I came home high as 5 people one night and saw the trailer for Top Gun. The next morning I drove to the recruiter and enlisted without telling my parents. After basic I was assigned to the newly commissioned Theodore Roosevelt and became a Aviation Ordinanceman 3rd class (AO3) and got out just before Desert Storm. That movie single-handedly changed the course of my life. When you said it increased the recruitment by 500% I chuckled. I was one of them. Liked and subbed

The best bit of these Top Gun clips is the barely suppressed smirk on Ward's face the WHOLE way through. A mix of "They actually made a movie about my old day job!" and "79 egregious errors and counting..." Keep 'em coming!

Great facts and a great movie despite it’s flaws. Took my then girlfriend on a first date to see the original in 86, still married to this day and patiently waiting for Top Gun “Maverick” to be released next May. I still have the original VHS but no player to play it on 😂 can’t bear to part with the tape. One of the best soundtracks in cinematic history, second only to Gladiator IMO. There are a lot of people that must be questioning their decisions not to be involved with it’s making 🤪

I always like the behinmd the scenes facts about a movie I like., such as actors/actresses who were considered for a role but turned it down for various reasons. Also, in movies based on true events, I like learning about what the actual people involved in those events (if still living) think about a movie about them and the event. Great video!

I was lucky enough to be working and living in Hollywood when 'Top Gun' came out and saw an immaculate print shown at The Chinese Theater......[most Hollywood] showings are always immaculate.....It was fantastic in my opinion........as a photographer, I really appreciated the deck sequences with the use of filters and over cranked film technique .......Well done Tony Scott........

I remember when Top Gun came out. All my friends knew that I was a PR and recently discharged from the Navy. Man they had a million questions. My reply to them was “While it was a somewhat entertaining movie, I never saw anything like that in the Navy!”
I still prefer The Final Countdown.

I find that strange; that rolling right as you said (at 5:53) would cause the nose to swing the other way...adverse yaw (if I recall correctly) why would it do that when the F-14 uses roll spoilers instead of absent ailerons; I thought the influence of the roll spoilers would prevent the adverse yaw that you are mentioning...very interesting phenomenon you pointed out there.

Great video award. Lots of “bad choices” by the “talent” originally cast for the film. I was a sophomore at ASU after this movie came out. My dorm mate was going through a breakup with a girl back East. He played that song “Every breath you take” constantly, day and night. It was something that apparently helped him through the break up. It did not help my studies however so the cassette found its way to the bottom a the swimming pool. To this day nobody knows how it got in the pool :)

August of 1986, I was a semi-homeless kid in Austin. My high school football coach told me I was never going to be a good enough linebacker to play my way into college. I dropped out of school, smoked a joint, and watched Top Gun THREE TIMES in a tow. I walked into the Navy Recruiting Station in the mall and told them I wanted to fly. AO2 Terry Harrison rolled his eyes, and scheduled me for the ASVAB. I'm smarter on paper than I really am, so I scored well enough to qualify for AW A School. I turned 17 in September, and the rest was history.
No where in the movie OR the recruiters office do they mention how much time I'd have flying a buffer.

In the beginning, an officer says "hello Scott" to another officer. Scott was my back seater and a great guy. We were with VF-114 on the "E" during filming. At one other point, an A-4 (flown by "Death" Ray) was chasing an F-14 at low level when he goes through about 90 degrees of roll. The A-4 has aerodynamic slats and he had a "slat departure" at that point. Said it "scared the sh*t out of him"! I'm sure it did, as they even get your attention at 20,000 feet. The early "daily's" had footage taken from the pilot's view that was shaky, as the airplane was in buffet (not a sideboard on which food is served), which the aircrews all thought was cool. The videographers didn't use the footage, sadly.

The base was still buzzing about the “Top Gun” until the movie came out. We were all very proud to be a intricate part of the f14 community. Most people wouldn’t know f14s existed without “top gun” and folks like yourself. Lots of good memories.
