Thanks for another great video. In 1974 and earlier you could drive around the grounds of the telegraph station at Eucla and walk through all the rooms. The dunes show no mercy! BTW there were road trains back in the 60's and 70's. Maybe not 4 trailers but at least 2 and 3 trailers. The original Eyre Hwy was wide enough for about 4 road trains to fit across it. Looks like its down to a single lane now. When it rained the road filled with water and it was really difficult to see any rocks and pot holes. Those tanks were important water sources for travellers in the old days. Ivy tanks was a really well known stop. The Hwy was completed during WWII and my father first drove it in 1952. He loved the road and we did many trips from Perth to Melbourne when I was young the last time we did the old road was in 1974 I think when I had my licence. Love your work.

Another great video guys. Last camp site with the Eagles nest looked like an awesome spot……. I know you guys dont choose the adverts, but by watching them, I have all the info I need to use salt to “build a rock hard tent pole”, You should pay us to watch some of the crap they put on …. 😂😂😂…… Anyway, happy to keep supporting you guys and RFDS

when we moved from NSW to Esperance in 1959 we put the semi trailers on the trans train in Port Pirie and took them off in Kalgoorlie then drove the very rough track/road down to esperance.

FYI 2 of my aunts drove from Western Australia through to Boort in Victoria back in the early 1920s I believe that they were the first women to cross the Nulabor solo No Highway no caravan no 4wd . I love watching your videos, as a kid back in 1975 we went to the telegraph station, and the sand was up to the chimneys. good to see it still standing and more of it. We did the Nullarbor crossing 8 times in the back of a valiant with no air conditioning way back then Petrol was 14 cents a litre out there. (4 times on the old dirt road). I never get sick of seeing footage of the area. Hope you all have a great Christmas and keep on traveling so we can see more of your amazing adventures.

Hi from New Zealand. Yes another great video of the vast flat country of Australia. The scenery is great. We because we love our jobs and pets can only go away for weekends and holidays. So we are about to start for the first time some caravanning trips NZ in our 2007 23 foot Jayco Sterling caravan and our 2015 Ford Ranger ute done 77000 kms. Yes you guys have helped inspire this. So we will get a taste what you do. Any advise that you can give. Keep the traveling videos coming, it would be good to see you travel in NZ 1 day soon. We have Titanium caravans in NZ. You are bringing back our memories of the “old days” of the Eyre Highway . We first drove the gravel Eyre H’way in 1972 when we drove from Darwin to Perth . The road from Alice Springs to Pt Augusta was gravel as well and we drove a 2 door GTR Torana . We drove both ways again in 1974 during the night due to vehicle breakdown and a time frame and yes we had road trains …………. And the road was narrow . Very little on way of road houses except for Ivey Tanks which we called into around midnight and bought a bacon burger ……… the best ever . Koonalda is extremely interesting especially the cave .

Interesting video this week. I've always been curious about the old Highway and I'd still like to do it if I was in a tent but with a 2.4m wide van I think I'll content myself with your video. Your temporary lack of forward progress in teh Dunes at the Telegraph station reminded me of a very old conversation when crossing teh Simpson in the 90's. Old timer and I, sitting around a camp fire one night, were discussing everyone's choice of tyres. We couldn't understand those who'd fitted wide "muddies" for the trip as the extra width meant a wide "bow wave" of sand each tyre pushed in front of it. (We were both using 185 85 R16 LT's but 245's back home for normal work)). Eventually we started talking abouit tyres for the campers that were getting towed across. Given we'd already agreed with the narrow tyre idea for the sand we then pondered the value of airing down for a trailer that has no traction. There must be a point where airing down to give more float v smaller bow wave must have a sweet spot. Perhaps there's a PhD student out there who'd like to do the reseach 😁😁😁
Sounds like a great conversation around the campfire! It's food for thought. I agree, narrower tyres are better in most situations, the challenge is getting them these days especially with an adequate load rating.
love the remoteness that you always seem to find. We are gearing up to leave in a few months we have sold everything and just going to travel. Spoken with Kalim from water makers Australia and purchase a set up to try out in the new car once we are on the road. Just wondering if you are still thinking of putting a video together with more content on water maker. would enjoy seeing more about what you thought of it.

Heck, video call, I came from a time of 1 phone in the house and the handset was connected to the base with a cord. No fancy cordless for us! Oh and also mum and dad did have a remote control TV - they told me to change the channel, I got up and changed it for them.

Yeah, when Simon said that to Liz something in the back of my head thought that wasn’t right. While reading Batty’s Bush Bible this morning the topic came up so I hit Wikipedia and sure enough road trains have been around since the 1800s and in modern motorised form in Australia since the 1930s. Now that lonely grey cell of mine back there can rest in peace! But just to make sure please reassure Liz that her conjecture was on the money.

Love it! Do you need a permit to drive that road? Have you needed to run the DRS or is the van pretty dust-proof?
No need for permits, it's a public road. We use the DRS in this one becuase it has venting in the door, etc.
