It's all about the atmosphere, the dread, that creepy icky feeling that gets under your skin and you can't get out of your head. Other classics like Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Audition, and recently, The Witch are in the same category. Plus there are a couple well placed jolts that really got me when I first saw this (closet scene, millipede). Two of the best jump scares ever.
@@VivekHari123 I know EXACTLY what you're talking about here! Plus the vintage black and white film they used when showing the ladder, the empty chair, the lamb with the limp, etc.
This movie scarred me for life. I first saw it when I was ten. Yeah, I should have listened to my parents when they told me to go upstairs. But on the bright side it got me to not be scared of horror movies anymore. I love horror movies now.
I first watched it around that age as well. The scene of the girl in the closet freaked me out so much backed then and I've avoided watching it again. But I've since then grow and adapted myself to watching thriller/horror movies (especially those of 'supernatural' genre) and am now willing to watch it again to finally overcome one of my childhood fears.

I seen this movie in theaters alone when it came out back in 2002. I went one day after school because I heard people talking about it. I was a senior in high school. The videotape was the most disturbing part of the movie
I really enjoy the atmosphere of the cursed video tape and the movie itself, it feels like everything is almost hopeless and the videotape generally seems like it is a recording of some afterlife or other world/dimension. I guess it did come from another world since Samara made it with her mind and it wasn't made through conventional means. It has this really miserable melancholic feeling surrounding it, this movie feels like you are looking into some ones nightmare or fever dream, but in a good way. This was probably the last horror movie that stuck with me after I turned the T.V. off, I just felt this feeling of dread hanging over me for about a week after, like this movie had put me in some bad mental state for that period.
Both versions are unnerving to watch. But this version added even more unnerving imagery. Although the Japanese had more creepy sounds. Either way, both versions are better horror films than modern horror movies.
@@simpleplanfan011 The Ring and Ringu have a lot in common but also are pretty distinct. Ringu has a more complex plot, with a heavier emphasis on Sadako's family and psychic powers in general. @diamond_dogs It's up to personal preference honestly, I think Ringu had a better plot and was scarier but The Ring really nails the atmosphere. I was expecting The Ring to not hold a candle to the original but honestly for what it is it's actually pretty good, I feel Ringu is still better but The Ring does justify it's existence
That soft, repeating screech sound would replay over and over in my head, and gave me nightmares for years. Cool how at first Rachel's like not really looking at the screen, stuck in the mundanity of watching a video, and the image of the ring and that haunting sound snaps on and it like...hypnotizes her, draws her in. Probably obvious but I still thought it was cool.
It's scary, but not the same "scary" like other horror movies. The ending, leaves you with a feeling of uncertainty, if that's the correct way of describing it. There's like some sort of cosmic horror feeling to it. There's no way of stopping Samara. And she'll never stop. She'll always find you once the time is over...
I have some questions about the tape. They aren't jokes. 1.What happens if you turn off, unplug or even destroy the TV in the middle of the tape? 2.What happens if you try to entirely try to kill Samara as she's coming for you? (Destroy TV when Samara's in sight/Simply try to shoot her when she's out of the screen) 3.What if you don't answer the phone call after the tape? 4.What if you get rid of all electronics that have a screen before the death day? 5.When Samara comes out the TV and gets closer to you, what happens if you simply run away in the town when there are people around you? 6.What will Samara do after the death of the watcher?
Evan Kinsler 1.) The tape will still play. Even after the TV knocks Rachel into the well, the TV still flashes with static even though it’s unplugged. 2.) Samara is a ghost. Bullets do nothing. 3.) She’ll leave a message. This happens after Noah watches the tape. 4.) She’ll wait until she can get to you. 5.) See previous answer. 6.) Probably vanish.
TheMonsterGroovy One addendum. For number 1, I think the OP meant when they watch the tape for the first time, if they don’t finish it, does Samara still come for them. And the answer is no, she doesn’t. The tape has to be watched from start to finish for the curse to take hold. This was addressed in the sequel when one of the characters closes her eyes after the tape starts playing (heavily implied to be in the middle), and Samara kills the one who was trying to pass on the curse instead.
I got a question, what if you leave the screen facing down the well that Samara was thrown in after she was killed, will she keep falling down the well?
I was a US Marine in Kuwait waiting to go forward with the war in 2003. We watched this a few days before the invasion of Iraq. Completely freaked out one of my friends. Word got around about his response, last company formation before going forward, 1Sgt says where is Cpl Jones (not real name), homeboy speaks up right here first sergeant. Without skipping a beat, old man says you’ve got 7 days. Everyone stops moving and even breathing for about 10 seconds, everyone falls down laughing. Jones was not amused and walked off yelling about all this is BS and he’s not slept in days, yada yada. For the rest of the deployment, he’s get signs left in his vehicle or his rack saying that. It never got old.
I watched halfway through the tape here before i froze out of fear. The pure eerieness and how surreal it feels makes it terrifying. I can't put my finger on excactly why.
A few things many of you might of not noticed in the tape. At 0:51 when the video of worms turns inverted. It looks like millions of people. Maybe showing how many victims Samara has killed in the past and present. At 1:15 its not rocks we see. Those are the horses that committed suicide, and they're now lifeless bodies washed up on shore.
