Sweet Video... Sweet Install. I've been modding Playstations for over 20 years, and I would say tweezers are a must! You gave a lot of great tips and tricks in this video. I will however add, I DO NOT, and I mean... strongly DO NOT recommend that anyone attempt to lift a board once a wire has been installed to test if its a solid connection. This is a super easy way to rip a trace directly off the board. In most cases, for beginner modders, this means death to the motherboard and the console. A pro modder can back track the trace and attempt to find an alternate installation point in the hopes of repairing it, but for most, its just dead. A gentle... and I mean gentle tug is often enough to ensure the wire is properly installed. Going to have to snag one of these and get it installed as I'm tired of dead lasers and burning .isos.... For the longest time, I continued to do so cause it was nostalgia for me as thats how ive been playing PS1 games for almost 2 decades.
I love tweezers and nail clippers. ive modded snes, genesis, dreamcast, gamecube, ps1, ps2, and tons of xbox originals, ive even made my own portable n64, and wrote my own game for gamecube and xbox orig. I love theese kind of vids keep it up!

I've gotten the feeling that I've been giving myself projects that may be a little too far out of my experience range (as fun as it is to challenge myself). something that's been on my list is to exchange the red analog light in my translucent dualshocks with matching color LEDs. I'll take your recommendation and move that project to the top of my list. I love my clear blue dualshock2 and wish that it was glowing blue instead of that harsh clashing red!!

I modded countless Wii, Psp, ps1 ps2, repaired even more DS DSi(xl) 3DS(xl) and I LOVE TWEEZERS! No seriously Tweezers are awesome. Also don't feel bad about burning off the insulation. It's only bad if you don't clean your iron and have plastic bits swimming in your solderjoint. Awesome Videos

I did this myself. I cut off tiny bits of solder and placed them onto the vias, placed the kynar wire near it and dabbed with the solder iron. this worked to make sure I controlled the amount of solder used because I like to do it right the first time and not have to clean off excess solder or deal with bridges. I then used my smartphone to zoom in and do inspections. Not my best work either but it worked! It is more about patience and meticulous checking your work and studying the install guide properly. PU-22 revision of the PS1 board does not have solder mask on the vias themselves.

Order an MM3 modchip for the ps1, Install the MM3 first, its AMAZING practice for your first mod, also, the MM3 works with PSIO and its an excellent entry level install, it will gear you up for PSIO, And any thing you need to know, hit me up and i got your back

Oh definatly, leds is a fantastic place to practice, all my first mods where led, theres alot of soldering videos on my channel and you can learn alot from it. I did a full series called "solder basics" you can find that in playlist section, it should help you alot
I mod heaps of random stuff, been doing so for over 15 years. I just cannot get used to tweezers. I prefer my fingers for more tactile feel. Even OG XBox RAM upgrades are done by careful placement and taking opposing corners. I might be cringey to others, but it works for me. Also I only start working when at least 6 beers in.
My original playstation was LED modded years ago :D Thanks for showing this, I am super excited for the PSIO as the drive is going out on my playstation (have to turn it upside down to play) and so I'll likely pick one of these up. Tweezers are a must for fine pitch soldering! The biggest mod I have done is a McWill screen replacement on my childhood Sega Game Gear but the results were worth it!
I have four of these under my belt now. Three more lined up. Definitely going to think about my wiring presentation a bit more now after seeing yours. Just looks so much better. I can't seem to make connections with tweezers though, the tweezers always melt through the insulation, so I use my finger tip which makes nice wiring more difficult. If my trace cuts don't look like perfect uniform lines, I feel like I've failed. Melting some insulation up the wire past the stripped part is a redo for me. Too obsessive about that. Fibreglass pen seems pretty big and indiscriminate for such tiny vias. I do them under massive magnification with a scalpel tip to really make sure all the mask is gone. Delicate work.
I understand everything you just said so very very well. Scratching away solder mask with a sharp tip is what i used to do before i got the pen, the pen changed my life lol. and as for tweezers melting through insulation, i've had mixed results with different brands of wire, the wire i use now seems to do well with it
Solder point 2 and 3, I connect the wires. Do a pick test, rip the copper points off the board ever so gently. Did I get it too hot? I've got a new digital readout soldering iron and I've always used just a cheap no readout Weller. I had it set to 600, where should I start for lead based?

Your presentation amused me. Where other videos on this subject can be rather dry, I found myself watching through the entire thing. Usually I just skip through for the relevant information, but I found your casual banter really charming. I don't mod often, and have very little experience in the field. My only experience is in sloppily circuit bending an old casio several years back. I feel confident in what I need to do and practice before I go through with this installation. Namely, learning more about this flux material. ..Also, I do happen to love tweezers as well. They are my tiny metal fingers. My very favorite tool that I keep nearby always. For like, poking stuff I guess. Idk they have random use, I can't think of specifically what I used them for last, but they are always around my desk for whatever use just in case. I don't have much to say about them other than that but, y'know, you asked so I have contributed my small answer. Anyway sorry about the long comment. Hey Paul, I love your work. You mentioned there are other ways to cut traces. What are some other methods that you know of. I am looking for the cleanest way to do mine. I find the exacto knife looks kind of unprofessional looking... know what I mean...

It is, good ear, hahahah, a new laser for ps1 is pretty good quality and decently cheap, but the PSIO is a great option, if you check some of my newer videos there's more solutions out now, so really it's all up to you and what works best
looks scary to do, especially the trace cutting, due to the tiny components, but if you know how to solder, and if you have previously soldered on a modchip, it should be straight forward.
I still recommend the pen, but very fine work sometimes is impossible as fiberglass pens tend to have a minimum diameter of 2mm. If things are too close together you end up scraping all the things

which i was handy with electronics i mean i have trouble desoldering the ps2 laser tip , how hot do you have your solder pen in order to desolder the tip without touching the motherboard

Hey i wanna say i dont think is the via the problem that solder cant flowing on the pad i saw the videos and i wanna say the flux you use is that is blocking sometimes the flowing sometimes its works sometimes not and the reason is the flux no matter the quility flux you have you never know what the flux has inside.
I just got everything and installed the chip at a lower temp. Problem is now I have continuity between the power and ground, my solder joints look small, nothing bridging that I can see, and I've looked it over a few times, anything anyone might know off have is a easy place to bridge and not notice on a pu18?
Since ps1 is your favorite console, as it is mine, have you ever thought of doing a fan mod on the power side? I've been thinking about it and how it's inevitably in my modding horizon since once I've got the PSIO installed, i'll want my PS1 to last for as many decades as possible.
A friend of mine is building a new power supply for the ps1. It runs 100x cooler. And is just far more efficient. I think hes assembled alot and going to sell them soon. Using this new power supply will be better than a fan.
@@RETROGAMINGARTS y'know, I've been a creative person all my life and have tried almost every generic outlet for that creativity. Yet I never realized that it could be applied to video games without a background in programming until I heard about the PSIO and started soldering. It's been the most rewarding endeavor I've had in years. The playstation meant so much to me growing up that it now feels like i've tapped into this part of myself and am learning to manipulate it. I just wanted to state that it's really inspiring to see such talented people develop things (like the PSIO and this power supply you mentioned) and share modding processes and advice purely out of passion. It's reassuring to know that if people like you are capable of such complex mods, then I must be able to at least accomplish some of the most simple chip installations. And then with enough experience, who knows what I'd accomplish. So down to the point, thanks for making all of these really informative videos and for continuing to do so.

Interesting mod. It is a whole lot better than using CD's which never seem to run as well as the originals no matter how you burn them. I even got an old plextor drive to burn them at x1 speed (newer drives only burn at x8 or above) and used made in japan taiyo yudens cd's. The copies only run flawlessly on my psone which looks like new. I suspect that the age of the laser has A LOT to do with how well copies perform. old, worn laser = hates copies no matter what.

I got a PS1 Console SCPH-1002 with disc read error £16 This PSIO will cost £100 maybe more If I have import charges. But I really don't want to cut traces, is it possible without cutting traces.
I am still using a Modchipped PS1 SCPH-5501, i don't know how many days left before the laser on it dies out, i'll need to know how to solder if i want a PSIO when the laser does the inevitable.
Replacement ps1 lasers are 15 bucks, they work pretty well, just as another option. But I always suggest leaning to solder, it has helped and effected my daily life so much. I fix and customize everything to my liking. It's great lol
I'll eventually put a PSIO switch board alongside my MM3 on my SCPH-5501 when the laser wants to die. It still works but games can be a bitch to load, it hangs on the Playstation logo sometimes when loading a game. CMC Magnetics CD-Rs (Memorex) are really finicky with modchipped PSXs, Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden CD-Rs have a higher success than the Memorex. and i use both Alcohol 120 or Imgburn at 8x speed for burning PSX games.
my PS1's laser just bit the dust yesterday, now it just hangs on a Playstation logo, no matter what disc that i use, Legit, import, Taiyo Yuden or Mitsubishi CD-R, no dice. it just couldn't stand the test of time. fortunately the seller on ebay gave me a partial refund. I need to save up for a new laser or a PSIO if i want to play PSX or just emulate until i have the dough for the parts.
Dig a blade into the trace and twist/spin it. So it will sever the trace. But you're not moving the blade in the "cutting" motion, so it allows you to be more careful

Hi, your videos are amazing. I love them. But, I have advice - try to use Amtech solder flux, it is much better than yours. I thing you have a flux from Aliexpress, or eBay, is not it? That colour is familier to me. If it is, it smells like amoniak or somthing that. The Amtech flux smells good ;-) Moreover Amtech flux works well, much better that flux from Ali etc. Good luck, and make more videos!

Hi, Amtech is the best flux I have ever used. I am a professional electro engineer and I have tried several fluxes. Amtech I've been using for about 10 years. Look on the web site TME.eu and type ANC559TF for 10ml flux or ANC559TF/30 for 30ml flux. Yeah I know, it is more expensive, but more reliable!

Man, as same as you I love nice soldering points, but your obsession for perfection as at 11:00 is boring. Sometimes you just cross the line. Overall is awesone!!!
I watched this video just to see how easy or difficult this mod was. I would say im a beginner in terms of dealing with consoles hardware (did an easy stereo mod on a genesis, have changed thermal paste on ps3, have done og xbox tsop flash and hdd upgrade, replace ps2 laser, etc; all basic level stuff). And im looking at this, and there is no way i can do that. The super thin and super close lines, the minuscule size of the soldering points, the skill to solder one point and avoid making contact with the one on the side. I mean, it is awesome you can pull this job. It is just awesome. But this mod is just out of my league. And the best part? this thing costs $110 dlrs. No.. just no. And it is sad, cause im sure many people are being left out because of all these details. We have tons of ways to play ps1 games, but seems like this one is just not for me.
So cybodyn posted a pic of making a more "traditional" style one a while back, where it replaces the cd drive. But other than 1 prototype pic. I havent seen anything about it since.
@@RETROGAMINGARTS Ya I read on some forum post they didn't have anything other than that to share. Out of all the ppl making ODE's I would have thought a PS1 one would have been the easiest. Maybe Terraonion or dansprojects can do it.
PSIOS from official developers are garbage. Ordered more than a year ago. A broken cartridge was sent. I waited a very long time. I had to send it back. They wrote that some detail on the cartridge does not work. They told me to wait. I've been waiting for the second month! And in total for more than a year! Technical support is silent. The money was thrown in the trash. Don't mess with these people! It is better to order in China, or play the old way with disks! Good luck to everyone and don't get into the same situation!

looks scary to do, especially the trace cutting, due to the tiny components, but if you know how to solder, and if you have previously soldered on a modchip, it should be straight forward.
They should make a product that replaces the cdrom completely like gdemu for dreamcast and does not require soldering.
I installed a good amount of PSX and Sega Saturn modchips back in the day and I never used flux.

Bet you used solder with a flux core which usually works well enough unless you're dealing with extremely small pitch stuff (not shown here).
The only thing i dont like about psio ... is the fact thats not reversible.. you need to cut traces.
Hi! If you're careful enough you can use the back of an xacto knife instead of the fiberglass pen

I still recommend the pen, but very fine work sometimes is impossible as fiberglass pens tend to have a minimum diameter of 2mm. If things are too close together you end up scraping all the things

i have to order another switchboard because the solder has overlapped other points. Fortunately, the solder from the ps1 motherboard is good.
I order mine on november 2018 and the order was ready and shiped april 2019 haha yesterday to be exact. Now waiting to the package to arrive.

which i was handy with electronics i mean i have trouble desoldering the ps2 laser tip , how hot do you have your solder pen in order to desolder the tip without touching the motherboard

Hey i wanna say i dont think is the via the problem that solder cant flowing on the pad i saw the videos and i wanna say the flux you use is that is blocking sometimes the flowing sometimes its works sometimes not and the reason is the flux no matter the quility flux you have you never know what the flux has inside.
I just got everything and installed the chip at a lower temp. Problem is now I have continuity between the power and ground, my solder joints look small, nothing bridging that I can see, and I've looked it over a few times, anything anyone might know off have is a easy place to bridge and not notice on a pu18?
I installed mine and now the composite is in B/W only and S-video flickers bad. What can I check to fix it? 7501 board
Tweezers are a must. I have a load, all with different tips.

Since ps1 is your favorite console, as it is mine, have you ever thought of doing a fan mod on the power side? I've been thinking about it and how it's inevitably in my modding horizon since once I've got the PSIO installed, i'll want my PS1 to last for as many decades as possible.
A friend of mine is building a new power supply for the ps1. It runs 100x cooler. And is just far more efficient. I think hes assembled alot and going to sell them soon. Using this new power supply will be better than a fan.
@@RETROGAMINGARTS y'know, I've been a creative person all my life and have tried almost every generic outlet for that creativity. Yet I never realized that it could be applied to video games without a background in programming until I heard about the PSIO and started soldering. It's been the most rewarding endeavor I've had in years. The playstation meant so much to me growing up that it now feels like i've tapped into this part of myself and am learning to manipulate it. I just wanted to state that it's really inspiring to see such talented people develop things (like the PSIO and this power supply you mentioned) and share modding processes and advice purely out of passion. It's reassuring to know that if people like you are capable of such complex mods, then I must be able to at least accomplish some of the most simple chip installations. And then with enough experience, who knows what I'd accomplish. So down to the point, thanks for making all of these really informative videos and for continuing to do so.

Interesting mod. It is a whole lot better than using CD's which never seem to run as well as the originals no matter how you burn them. I even got an old plextor drive to burn them at x1 speed (newer drives only burn at x8 or above) and used made in japan taiyo yudens cd's. The copies only run flawlessly on my psone which looks like new. I suspect that the age of the laser has A LOT to do with how well copies perform. old, worn laser = hates copies no matter what.

I got a PS1 Console SCPH-1002 with disc read error £16
This PSIO will cost £100 maybe more If I have import charges.
But I really don't want to cut traces, is it possible without cutting traces.
I am still using a Modchipped PS1 SCPH-5501, i don't know how many days left before the laser on it dies out, i'll need to know how to solder if i want a PSIO when the laser does the inevitable.
Replacement ps1 lasers are 15 bucks, they work pretty well, just as another option. But I always suggest leaning to solder, it has helped and effected my daily life so much. I fix and customize everything to my liking. It's great lol
I'll eventually put a PSIO switch board alongside my MM3 on my SCPH-5501 when the laser wants to die. It still works but games can be a bitch to load, it hangs on the Playstation logo sometimes when loading a game. CMC Magnetics CD-Rs (Memorex) are really finicky with modchipped PSXs, Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden CD-Rs have a higher success than the Memorex. and i use both Alcohol 120 or Imgburn at 8x speed for burning PSX games.
my PS1's laser just bit the dust yesterday, now it just hangs on a Playstation logo, no matter what disc that i use, Legit, import, Taiyo Yuden or Mitsubishi CD-R, no dice. it just couldn't stand the test of time. fortunately the seller on ebay gave me a partial refund. I need to save up for a new laser or a PSIO if i want to play PSX or just emulate until i have the dough for the parts.
i just pulled out my motherboard in my ps1, the components are soooo small, looks really hard and frustrating to do.
What are other methods of cutting a trace you spoke about?
Dig a blade into the trace and twist/spin it. So it will sever the trace. But you're not moving the blade in the "cutting" motion, so it allows you to be more careful

But, I have advice - try to use Amtech solder flux, it is much better than yours. I thing you have a flux from Aliexpress, or eBay, is not it? That colour is familier to me. If it is, it smells like amoniak or somthing that. The Amtech flux smells good ;-) Moreover Amtech flux works well, much better that flux from Ali etc.

Amtech is the best flux I have ever used. I am a professional electro engineer and I have tried several fluxes. Amtech I've been using for about 10 years.
Look on the web site TME.eu and type ANC559TF for 10ml flux or ANC559TF/30 for 30ml flux. Yeah I know, it is more expensive, but more reliable!

I watched this video just to see how easy or difficult this mod was. I would say im a beginner in terms of dealing with consoles hardware (did an easy stereo mod on a genesis, have changed thermal paste on ps3, have done og xbox tsop flash and hdd upgrade, replace ps2 laser, etc; all basic level stuff). And im looking at this, and there is no way i can do that. The super thin and super close lines, the minuscule size of the soldering points, the skill to solder one point and avoid making contact with the one on the side.
I mean, it is awesome you can pull this job. It is just awesome. But this mod is just out of my league. And the best part? this thing costs $110 dlrs. No.. just no.
And it is sad, cause im sure many people are being left out because of all these details. We have tons of ways to play ps1 games, but seems like this one is just not for me.
Temproarially, with a little more practice I GUARANTEE you can do this. Do a few ps1 mm3 modchips and you'll be good, they're the best practice

PSIOS from official developers are garbage. Ordered more than a year ago. A broken cartridge was sent. I waited a very long time. I had to send it back. They wrote that some detail on the cartridge does not work. They told me to wait. I've been waiting for the second month! And in total for more than a year! Technical support is silent. The money was thrown in the trash. Don't mess with these people! It is better to order in China, or play the old way with disks! Good luck to everyone and don't get into the same situation!
The larger the wires, the less I use tweezers generally.
