Oh is it time to talk about the World's Weirdest Racist?
My favorite one (haven't watched yet don't know if they mention it) is when he wrote to a news paper about a mining strike where most of the employees are black saying more or less "Well yes they are more prone to violence but has anyone thought about treating them less shittily so they have less reason to be violent?". Dude really took racism and presented it as a reason to not be shitty to the people he was racist towards.
Also a fun one about Lovecraft, he was on record saying about cops that "Irish, Italian and even Black people may not like him but they leave mostly him alone, where as cops will go out of his way to mistreat him"

i have some strong feelings about lovecraft honestly. i feel like on some level his work is compelling _because_ he was an awful guy. like ... he otherizes basically everything outside the narrow category of respectable white people he considered 'civilized' but he also represented that other as a vast and inevitable horror that comes from beyond space and time to corrupt the very self into something unrecognizable which i find like, kinda flattering.
to me they read like the nightmares of colonialism and it's very easy to find joy in the way the 'reason' of the 'civilized' protagonists breaks down on contact with the unthinkable. for me, the idea of someone's mind being sanity being broken by contact with the other is like, connected to a society that demands you never imagine or empathize with other ways of living. also for some reason he made his flesh-eating ghoul creatures like really attractive in an extremely furry kind of way.
it also helps that he's dead, was quite miserable for the most part and now all his stuff is public domain anyway

As a sex-repulsed asexual myself, I sympathize on the ONE point where learning about sexual anatomy killed all sexual interest forever. XD
I got the sex talk when I was eight, and was so grossed out by the concepts I had been introduced to that I swore on the spot that I would never want sex. Sex Ed in school only intensified that repulsion. To me there really is no “separate channel” for sexual desire vs the intellectual knowledge of what sex entails, and I was honestly BAFFLED to learn that people do actually genuinely experience a desire to fuck. 😂 I thought it was all some socially constructed fad, like… pokemon cards. Then it took another few years to deconstruct the knee-jerk belief that sexual desire must be some kind of evolutionary psychology thing which meant people’s higher cognitive skills must have to switch off entirely when they got aroused.
I spent a few years just. Studying the whole concept of sex, smut, and porn because it was such an alien and gross concept to me. Sometimes I really wish I didn’t have that perspective, tbh; it (combined with a painfully Christian conservative upbringing) made me very judgmental of people for a long time when I shouldn’t have been. The amount of work I had to do to just not be a sex-negative asshole is so frustrating in hindsight.

Maybe the reason that his mom's description of him being more appropriate for a cat is that he kinda was like a moody cat. More neurotic cats often have hard time with strangers and change in general. He also thought cats were much better than dogs and wrote floridly about them

For some reason the idea of Lovecraft denouncing racism in his last minutes is amusing to me, and makes me imagine like JKR in her deathbed in the distant future going "You know what, maybe trans women are women🤔" and then someone a couple generations from that point forward insisting she was a good person, actually, because ultimately she changed her mind.
On a more philosophical note, I wonder what it would actually take for a writer to in any degree correct their negative impact during their lifetime, considering the bad stuff would simply continue existing and still potentially have the same negative influence on readers. Obviously there are lots of people who dislike their previous work or think they might have been in the wrong about something they said, but that alone doesn't undo anything of course. I don't know.

    • @ffbotha
      @ffbotha 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

This isn't going from bad to good, but I think Ursula Le Guin is a good example of an author who realised her earlier works were harmful and actively worked to fix that through the later works. Hers is specifically how patriarchal the earlier Earthsea books are. She's commented on how she didn't even realise how much she was upholding patriarchal ideals in the earlier books due to her social environment at the time. When she eventually realised it she made an active effort in later books both to not keep doing it and to rehabilitate the earlier works. This is why there's at least one story from the perspective of witches, to show that much of the way they're viewed (and the limitations to their power) is an result of active prejudice from wizards rather than witches being innately worse at magic (as I believe it heavily implied in the earlier books).

The discalculia, the hyperglossia, the hatred of the outside, the samefoods, the asexuality, the unusually strident reflection of the societal views around him... It would honestly be tricky to come up with a more stereotypical description of an upper class White Autistic man a century ago.

While it’s not incorrect to cite Lovecraft’s experiences of in New York as an inspiration for The Call of Cthulhu, I feel it overlooks his story from the previous year, The Horror At Red Hook. It was about the evils of a cult of immigrant necromancers in the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn. This location was, obviously, entirely unrelated to the fact Lovecraft was living in an apartment on the edge of Red Hook at the time.

I'm sure I'm not the only one thats thought this, but does anyone else think 'The Color Out of Space' might just have been horror-themed 'Lud-In-The-Mist' fanfiction? The latter was published in 1926, the former 1927. This would be kind of ironic given the misogyny and the whole idea that Lovecraft's ideas were super original.
I do like his stories sometimes. Bad people make good art and whatnot.

This is definitely one of those situations where I have to actively engage in death of the author.
I really enjoy the ideas and tropes of horror that have evolved out of Lovecraft's work, and I did enjoy reading some of this stories... but I definitely realize that a lot of his work is dripping with racisim that was extreme even for his day, like the Arthur Jermyn story.... plus one of the best video games of all time (Bloodborne) wouldn't exist without this man. So there's been a lot of amazing stuff that has evolved from him.

I find discourse around Lovecraft's awfulness so interesting.
Like on the one hand, yeah, he was 100% awful in his attitudes towards anyone who wasn't a white Anglo-Saxon like himself (at least until later life, when he kinda started mellowing out).
But on the other hand, he was clearly an exceptionally mentally troubled man who may or may not have been heavily on the autistic spectrum, and I can't help but wonder if he would've had less trash opinions had he been born in the modern day.

The man was a massive racist, yes. But it is dishonest to talk about that without mentioning how much of his work can easily be read in an anti-racist, anti patriarchal manner, especially The Case of Charles Dexter Ward, Color out of Space, The Rats in the Walls and a beloved short gem of mine The Temple.
I am not saying he was a good person, but he was a more complex and redeemable charactet than you are presenting him as.

Loved this one. There's a video by this political streamer called President Sunday on Lovecraft and how his horror is not just racist, but driven by racist sentiment, like sublimated racism. You guys should check it out. Very interesting.

It's like, as an enjoyer of Lovecraft, his cosmic horror feels COOL rather than conveying the feelings that he probably intended. I think that experience is common, I don't think that enjoying Lovecraftian horror is a sign you're racist, but the opposite in fact: in fact, the reason you enjoy Lovecraft's imaginative creations is BECAUSE you don't share in his xenophobia. Step on me, fish mommy.
