Finally got around to finish watching the rest of this episode while drinking my morning coffee today. It made me smile when you kept callng the 110 a 100. I fall victim to the same thing when talking about those two reels!
Great video, Willie, I enjoy watching videos about the assembly, operation and maintenance of various mechanical devices since I have little background in mechanical engineering. I like the creation of a hybrid reel from two different models to create what I hope we can call "The Johnson Centry Willie 101 Special Edition" or maybe "The Johonson Centry Willie 2023 Freedom Reel" since its almost the 4th of July, the latter works for me! I can't wait to see it in action! I hope you and your family have a great 4th of July, take care and be safe!
Hey CJ! I wouldn’t say I’m the most technically minded but I do love seeing how these things work and function. Not to mention, being able to take 2 useless parts reels and make one good functioning reel that catches big crappie (spoiler alert😉) it’s just a good feeling to revive something and get it back out there doing what is was meant to do. As far as what to call it, I think “The Johnson 110 point A to point B Citation, WGF Edition..🤔😂 Thanks for watching CJ, I appreciate it!! Willie
Thanks fella!! In all your journeys I’m sure you’ll be able to find you one and do the same!! Give you something to do during those pop up flash rain storms you keep getting caught in!! 😂 Thanks for watching and commenting Bud!! I appreciate it very much!! Willie
I started out as a kid with a spincast and a metal tacklebox and 60 years later back with the good old reliable soincast. I have some newer Johnson spincast but i like the older made in the USA ones recently picked up a like new old century and today at the antique store a like new older citation for $6. bucks so excited to use it.
Hey there🤠, I understand perfectly how it is to be drawn more to the old stuff. New is fine but there’s no better feeling then walking through an antique store or flea market and see that emerald green standing out on a shelf among all the rest, pick it up, see that it seems to work, and the price is $6.. 😂.. What a great feeling!! Congratulations!! Let me know how it goes!! Thanks for watching!! Willie
Hi Willie, I like watching you take reels apart and putting them together. Can you put different manufacturers mixed? 🤔 It took you no time at all to rebuild it. "Feesh" is the way my mom always said fish. Why, I have no idea. 😊 You just made me smile. She's been gone 12yrs this month and my dad 17yrs this month. I do miss them loads. I can't wait to see this reel in action. What pound of line did you put on it? Tell all Hi and meow. Take care and stay safe till next time. ❤❤❤❤
Howdy Skye! I love taking them apart and making them function again. They deserve to get back out there doing what they were meant to do. I’ve never combined different companies. They Zebcos and the Johnsons are the only two I have ever mixed and matched but not with each other. I put 4 or 6lb line on most of the spin cast reels. My best friend and I have been saying Feesh for 40 years. 😂 I list my mother and father as well. About 7 years ago. Dad one year and mom a couple years later. I truly miss them as well. Learned a lot from them both. Everyone says Hi Skye and meow 🐈⬛ Thanks for watching Skye!! Willie
Hey there!! I love the Century and Citation. When you find a nice one and clean it up, they’re hard to beat. The technology for the time was pretty high up there in my opinion. It’s was sad they went out of business but when you try to change too much, that’s what happens.. But I love finding them… cleaning them up, and putting them back out there… it’s a blast. Thanks for watching and commenting, I appreciate it. Get your grandfathers and clean’um up!! Take them fishing!! 😉😃 Willie
Interesting! I respect your knowledge of equipment. Yeah, I'm not the best on maintenance or knowledge of equipment. I do however prefer spincast for lighter action especially. I have a zebco omega of some model (Maybe z03) that I like a lot. *I've tried a baitcaster and it's awesome on the retrieve! 😢😂😅
My knowledge comes from “diving in, tearing it apart and learning along the way”… I love seeing the technological changes through time. It’s actually exciting to see. At least to me anyway. I’ve seen the Omega but I can’t afford one😂. I’m afraid if I ever got one I wouldn’t mess with the old ones anymore!!😂😂 I thank you very much for watching and commenting!! Willie
@@TheGraytOutdoors I don't normally spend a lot on equipment. The z03 combo was on sale at Walmart, but still a little pricey. I still use a $1.00 flea market 70s dark green zebco 202 that I believe to be the model of my first fishing reel that I caught my first bluegill on. The drag is a bit wonky now after I hooked and brought in a big Bowfin with a beetle spin.
What is the best spincast on the market right now?The daiwa goldcast?Im a hardcore walleye fisherman that uses ONLY baitcasters for walleye whereas 99.99% of walleye anglers uses spinning reels but I want to try a spincast this year on my NRX you know to troll the other guys on the water
Hey there 🤠, To be perfectly honest, anything that I would tell you about “New Spincast Reels” would be mainly speculation.. I can count on one hand how many new ones I’ve bought and used.. 2 of them were discontinued, one (Zebco gold series 3 bearing) broke before I could get it on a rod.. The 4th reel, an Abumatic Max Pro, worked fairly well. I sent it to a gentleman in the Pacific North West who catches pretty nice trout with it on his TH-cam channel.. I know Zebco makes some pretty high dollar Spincast reels. Sadly, I can’t afford to spend that kinda money for a review, truly wish I could but I have picked them up in Bass Pro Shops on the display and they’re extremely smooth😄. However, that’s the best I can tell you on new Spincast reels. Maybe when I start making some reel money on TH-cam I’ll be able to buy some of those higher end Spincast reels and give them a fling or two.. sorry I couldn’t be more help.
@@DavidCallis-y1v Hey there, you most certainly can. Contact this gentleman Gary Barber GaryB92596@aol.com He has just about every part you could ever want for any Johnson reel..especially 110B and 100B.. I have a single arm 100a, which is in great condition, but the spool is very tight even when the drag tension screw is completely removed. I’ve been able to remove it but even after cleaning it, it is still incredibly tight and I’m not sure why. I’ve seen plastic Zebco center spindles swell over time causing spools to be very tight, and I’m wondering if this can happen to the Johnson drag washer system to? Has this ever happened to you and if so how can I fix it?
@@Shankdaddy16 🤠Hey there!! Honestly, it’s very hard for me to diagnose things when I can’t physically tear into it.. I’m a very “hands on” individual when it comes to the mechanics of these old reels.. Johnson reels (Century’s and Citations) are pretty easy to completely disassemble and put back together and that’s usually what I do.. I inspect and clean the entire thing one piece at a time. Usually the only thing a good cleaning can’t fix, is a physically broken part, like bad gears or cracked drag shoes but for the most part, cleaning is always the major problem.. I know that the spool will get frozen in the body from corrosion. If it was used in salt water and never washed out they will freeze up in the body on top of the copper clicker. Taking the spool out, as well as the three drag shoes, brass drag bar, and copper clicker then using an SOS pad and hot water to clean the surface of the body where the clicker and spool sit usually always loosens up the spool allowing it to spin once everything is reinstalled.. make sure the inner surface of the spool, (the donut hole) where the drag shoes ride is cleaned with the SOS pad as well. A little grease around the inside of the hole will help is ride smoothly on the drag shoes.. Other than that, making sure everything is reinstalled correctly is the key.. I hope that helps, like I said, I’m a “hands on” tear it apart, figure it out, put it back together, kinda guy.. and I actually hate it when someone is having an issue and I can’t see it or physically have the reel in front of me.. please let me know how it goes and if that doesn’t work, maybe we can walk through it via email and get that thing right.. Willie
@@TheGraytOutdoors Wow, thank you for this detailed reply! I’ll tear it down again later this week and see if I can get a better sense of what’s going on then I’ll get back to you on that, only thing I can tell you right now without looking at it is that I did get it very clean and I did use grease. These early 100a reels use a one piece plastic drag shoe with a metal clip around the circumference that clicks into place on the spool (one side of the spool is green).
@@Shankdaddy16 🤠Ah, yes.. the one piece drag shoe.. then there should be a “groove” in the center of the spool that the ring snaps into.. and the spool should face “green side” up.. honestly the only thing I can think of at the moment is, if the body is as clean as you say, where the spool touches, where the center of the spool making contact with the drag shoe can be causing your issue.. again, I wish I had it in pieces in front of me..this will make me crazy until we/you figure it out😂..
@@TheGraytOutdoors I got the reel apart again and tried to put the spool and drag shoe on the shaft without any other component on the reel body but it still won’t go on easy. I can force the spool on but I have to really struggle to get it back off. When I push the spool with the drag shoe onto the shaft it kind of snaps on and cannot be rotated. If I take the drag shoe out of the spool I can push it onto the shaft with very little effort. I took a few measurements with my calipers: Spool ID: 0.996” Spool w/ drag shoe Id: 0.616” Shaft Diameter: 0.616” Drag Shoe ID outside of spool with no tension: 0.618”
