    Once again I've learned something new. I had no idea, nor did I ever give any thought to, where cork came from. Thanks Blair.

    Thanks Blair! I was raised in Los Altos but moved to Hawaii many decades ago. It's nice to drive around the old neighborhoods with you guys and see all the sights. Aloha.

    Many years ago when traveling in Portugal and a bit into Spain, I was amazed to see large Cork Oak orchards in various states of "cork regrowth" - some just stripped, some looking like they were probably ready for another harvest. I couldn't believe harvesting didn't kill the trees, but I couldn't argue that the trees looked very much alive and very old!

    Love your video's. I live in KS and my favorite thing to do is walk and look at trees. It amazing to look at trees like osage orange and know they were planted when this area was first lived on.

    Well I'll be dawged. So THAT'S how we get cork. I never knew that! Also my first time seeing one of these trees. ( I never even knew it was in the Oak family. ) This is one of the main reasons I love your channel........always something fascinating to learn. Thanks Blair!!!

    Such an wicked tree. Trees are truly awesome, the Cork tree is the only tree that can loose all of its bark and not die, or be affected.

    I've heard that cork was harvested from tree bark, but I've never seen it. Poor naked tree. Thanks for sharing Blair.

    We have quite a few of these trees here in Northern California. After losing all my trees in a fire here 5 years ago, I collected about 15 acorns and just stuck them in the ground. I think they all grew. One that gets water is now 10' tall. The soil here is terrible.

    Hi Blair, the cork bark is a layer designed to fire proof the tree. The real bark is under the cork. The first couple of harvests are not used for bottle stoppers after that it's nice and uniform.

    Fascinating... I found a miniture cork model of a Japanese garden inc trees, bridges etc a couple of days ago. Simply beautiful, about 10" long & 2" high. The detail is stunning & its enclosed in glass. Tried googling it but have had no luck as I don't know what it's called...

      Do a google on "cork diorama". Also japanese chinese oriental cork carving searched in various permutations, but the first worked for me.

    Suber Bark slips off perfectly in high summer. Tanbark fataly pops off in spring leaving white shinny new wood taking the cambium layer with it. Resulting in death of the tree.

    Hi Blair. Love your videos. I am an arborist in Texas. We don't usually use ladders but, this ladder you have looks really interesting. Can you stear me into the direction to find a ladder like this? Thanks, Matthew TX1340A

    • @arboristBlairGlenn
      @arboristBlairGlenn  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mateo Clemente I'll need to look at the manufacturer on the ladder. They are pretty expensive. About 400 for a 16 footer. We do a lot of fine pruning on smaller trees and it makes a big difference.

    • @mateoclemente6751
      @mateoclemente6751 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would be awesome. I see the need in this for our PHC tech. He could do his sprays and fine pruning without climbers or lifts.

    Thanks for Species introduction. On topic of Bark...Blue Ash bark used to Dye Jeans back when. A regional story that goes back a century ago, warns how a band of Men started making money. By ripping bark completely off of their Victims big stately column sized trunks, regardless of species type, or time of season. Soon, everyone in area wanted in on new fad, having attractive Groves of light brown shiny creamy colored debarked trees. By the third year word got out on how many trees were showing results of mortal wounding's, which by then left secondary phloem's totally defenseless. But not till this wayward band of mal-intent landscapers, had already finished up their work on the distant fifth town down the road.

    Now we have plastic corks in our wine bottles, are they growing huge plastic cork oak trees to cut the corks from?
    (To avoid any misunderstandings this is a joke). :O)

    What's the oldest oak ever? And where?

    • @ahabtheplant
      @ahabtheplant 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kane Ibbotson Wikipedia has the oldest oak tree at 2000 years old. It lives in California. I never repeat actual locations for old trees even if it's on the page, I once told one of my former (beaten up and ratted out) friends of a lovely old tree and the rat carved his initials in it!

      I live in the uk next to a old 1200 Century Castle that Henry viii destroyed in the 1500s and there is a real nice big old tree there not sure how old it is but it's so beautiful I will take a photo of it next time I walk past it :)

    How do you even tell if a cork tree is unstable or not. Taking the baseball bat and whacking the roots and trunk gives you the same punky cork sound. You have to skin the whole tree, and then see what you can see within the sliced bark and notice any weaknesses. Too bad cork oaks don't have wine taps on them. Would make more sense.

    I love stuff like this but I was a little disappointed to find out that cork has no panty removing abilities.
