    Oh yes, those surface mount cans are a plague. Even in the high end Sony gear, working on a V-21 right now with the same issue. Good job at finding the trouble.

      I found the rotary encoder shaft was not securely gripping the external jog shuttle dial ...like you I had to push down to jog step the frequency -- dismantle and gently spread the encoder shaft splines ( if thats the term ) I would be wary if of spraying anything that leaves a residual having seen inside the encoder

I have recently only bought an second one SONY ICF SW77 I am facing an big two problems in it... the Arrow marking two buttons above the JOG Dialing Cursor doesn't work neither the Jog dial is working i mean the manual jog dial tuning has stop working only.. rest as usually 😉 Sony SMD Aluminum Capacitor issue are weaker an the sound is almost around to nothing only... so my Question to you is sir .... >>>> Does all this weak Capacitors affects the Jog dial circle button not to work ... an those arrow buttons too stop working...

    • @Radiocruncher
      @Radiocruncher  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Amit. Bad capacitors will affect the voltages throughout the radio so could be the cause of your buttons and encoder not working properly. The encoder could of course be worn out but unless it’s seen a lot of hours this is unlikely. The capacitors can also leak electrolyte which can corrode the board and also get into the vias so it’s important that you check this out as well. Good luck Graham

    The encoder on my ATS909X is not optical, oddly they changed from the optical one in the older ATS909 and introduced problems by using switches.

    Hello .
    I follow your work with appreciation.
    Do your videos always leaner shots.
    Doing real intimate lean work in your videos.
    My advice is to first remove all the smd capacitors in the pc circuit
    Then isopropyl alcohol clear the pc card.
    Change the capacitor inside the dc -dc converter box. don't forget (22uf 6,3v).
    Remove all SMD aluminum capacitors
    Fit the SMD tantalum capacitor instead of all SMD aluminum capacitors.
    Both in terms of life span and capacitor leakage.
    at least 50 years working smoothly. (LIFETIME WARRANTY)
    (1uf.,22uf,47uf,6,8uf,(100uf 4v),(220uf 4v) =3528 B Tipi SMD )
    (100uf ,220uf 10v =6032 C Tipi SMD OR 3528 B Tipi SMD )
    (470uf= tantalum= 7343 E Tipi SMD OR D TİPİ)
    Please don't install smd aluminum capacitor again.?
    Pc circuit board does not remove a second repair.
    I have changed all radios to tantalum capacitors as a sony collector
    if you are working with your sony radios sw77.sw55 tell them to everyone immediately attach tantalum capacitor.
    Replace your radio without malfunction.
    So far, I did numerous, sony icf pro80, sw55.sw77 radio repair.
    Smd aluminum capacitors doing major destruction in pc circuit.
    DO NOT USE IN SONY RADIOS.
    Pc circuit saw radios in very very bad condition.
    Smd tantalum capacitor is very easy to disconnect and remove
    I only recommend to you.
    ultimately, labor costs money.
    Smd aluminum capacitors only, tweezers and crow-nose penseyle removed.
    Fİx the tweezers under the aluminum rubber gasket and make it to the right with pliers.
    Other than the large capacitor only end, other small capacitors tweezers with the method of pliers removed.
    Takes no more than 5 minutes disassembly.
    No one wants to share information on this site.
    I have repaired many sony radios with this method.
    Clear isopropyl alcohol after removing smd capacitors
    Do not try because of the large capacitor pliers method.(pc board removes paths)
    Do not exceed 320 degrees with hot air.(would not recommend.)
    very unpleasant smell coming out.
    is not my own link, it is for information only.
    Pdf file is for those who do not.
    The poles of the SMD capacitors plus the negative direction.
    Blue dots plus direction shows

    I wish you success in your work.

      Thanks you very much for your comprehensive comment. I have heard of upgrading to all tantalum SMD caps but have never tried it. I will give it a go on my next SW77 repair and see how I get on. I’m not totally sure on what you mean for removal of the old capacitors. Regards Graham

    • @sonycollectionrepair5555
      @sonycollectionrepair5555 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Remove all old SMD capacitors from the circuit.
      on the circuit, remove all working capacitors.
      Replace from scratch again.
      The problem is not solved when you replace faulty capsents only.
      the exact solution, replace all the old capacitors.
      my advice to you is definitely to use tantalum capacitor

    My unit doesn't hold the data after the batteries are removed, I guess I have to change the supercaps, although I checked the prismatic supercap and it held the charge for hours. But I didn't test the cylindrical supercap, which is mounted on the LCD board. Does it have to be a 6.3V type ?

    • @Radiocruncher
      @Radiocruncher  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dorf. The supercap is sat on a 6v rail so I would assume you would need the 6.3v cap as fitted. I think I may have one here but they are still available from Mouser. I didn’t fit one in this radio as the existing one was okay but I have done one since that which I did replace it in as it was corroded

      @@Radiocruncher Hello, there is a seller on ebay, but the caps aren't fresh.
      EDIT : I did measurements, on batteries (6V), C818 has ≈5.81V (off) and 5.56-5.62V (on). With the AC power adapter it is 6.36V (off) and 6.27V (on).
      [After removing a battery the voltage breaks down immediately.]
      So yes, a 6.3V supercap is mandatory.
      And yes, the schematic was right with 5.8V on the plus rail (C818). ;)

Once it goes to FM mode the radio goes to silent, and the FM frequency can't be changed at default FM 76.00 and in another few seconds it shuts off by itself. Do you know why the issue is? Is it because of bad capacitors? Thank you so much

    • @Radiocruncher
      @Radiocruncher  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Andre. The capacitors in these will be bad by now if they haven’t been changed. I suspect the ones in the FM section will have stopped it working. If left too long then the board will get damaged by leaking electrolyte

      Hi Amit. Well done on restoring the audio. Did you change the capacitor C704 in the DC-DC converter (inside the metal can)? It sounds like the rotary encoder is either worn or dirty. It’s worth checking the wires from it and the connector to the main board for continuity first though. I’ve not replaced or taken an encoder apart in one of these though but worth taking it apart if all else fails. The keys are activated by carbon pads on the back of the rubber membrane. If liquid has leaked into it then it might not be making proper contact. Take the membrane off and *gently* clean the contacts on the board and the carbon pads with isopropyl alcohol. Be very careful not to remove too much carbon doing this as it will ruin the contacts. I would certainly change the super capacitor. It’s responsible for holding the memories and may interfere with the controls if it’s dead. It’s 0.047F 6.3v. The only stockist I’ve found is Mouser electronics. Good luck

    Those SMD cans are the worst thing ever invented. When the start to leak the electrolyte in them is highly corrosive and will migrate quite a distance on the board destroying traces and component leads. If they get into the vias on double sided boards it can be game over. Hopefully you don't have any of that going on. ATB Doug.
