📚Description: Earlier this year, if you were quick - the Gibson demo shop offered up 5 Matt Heafy Prototype Epiphone Origins Les Paul Customs. I ordered one, but my shipment was delayed several weeks. By the time it got to me, I got busy with other things, but today is the day we review this guitar.
After recording - I realized Heafy livestreamed him opening prototypes on his show and talked through what he wanted changed. It seems likely this guitar might've been in his hands at some point which is pretty cool! There are many things I like better about the prototype, but many things the production run did better as well. We discuss all of this in the video!

I can explain the neck heel change - I helped Matt design this guitar from the start - if you notice in the clip you added he mentions Jody, that's me.
The modern heel is stronger, structurally which is important when these guitars are being taken on the road and importantly, where it joins the body on the bass side, the modern much slimmer and rounder. It has the standard LP rounded corner vs the extra right angle block corner on the axcess heel (which is added to give structure). If you're the type of player who wraps their thumb over the top, which a lot are, your thumb is sitting on this big blocky section with a hard corner on it instead of a rounded smooth corner like on the modern heel.
It came down to looks vs playability and while the modern doesn't look as fancy, it's about 90% of the access but more ergonomics for a lot of players who would wrap their thumb there. It's a preference thing at the end of the day. Other youtubers blamed gibson and claimed it was cost cutting but it most definitely wasn't that; It was a considered choice. Every part of the product was dived into until Matt was completely happy with it. We started designing these in early 2019 and a certain worldwide event delayed everything by a few years which why you see the serial date it to when you said it was.
The end result is an incredible, modern Les Paul with a nod to the classics. People seem to like it and it's awesome you got one of these to demo for your channel!
Thanks for this explanation, Jody, I've been wrongly assuming the axcess heel was stronger. Awesome you were involved in designing this nice Epi model.
The older Model had the axcess as the Prototype and was made in Indonesia
Legend
That's the one thing I always hated about neck-through designs, they look cool but you don't have the heel there for your thumb and I find my thumb constantly sliding down. I don't know anything to prove the strength of the joint, but the "Modern" heel design allows me to still use my thumb as a fulcrum point, for better or worse.
Thanks Jody!
As a lefty I really appreciate Matt going out of his way to make sure there are lefties available.
Me too.. That's outstanding! I feel I need to buy one now!
The best thing about matt heafy is that he actually uses production level signatures, unlike so many other artists.
Why you gotta call Tommy Thayer out? With his USA custom shop epiphones!! lol
The only mod he makes is that he installs Evertune bridges on his live instruments
@@ghostinthesnow11yeah makes sense plus his production model would be so much expensive if they came with an evertune stock
Dimebag did. From what I've read, that was a big reason he walked away from Washburn and switched back to Dean. He started to notice the production guitars were slipping in quality, and he didn't want people to get ripped off.
I don't know, that doesn't matter for me. These artists can use whatever gear they want. Just because they make something affordable for their fans doesn't mean that it's what they should want to play. Someone mentioned T Thayer. If he can use custom shop why would he use an 800 dollar epiphone. Them putting their name on something doesn't mean they are claiming it's the best thing out there.
I have a white seven string version. The differences you mentioned are correct. There are a couple more. The pickups arent just a different color, they are a different model. There are also locking grover tuners on the production model.
Nice to see an artist request lefties for the signature models, I'm now off to learn all about Trivium :o)
Definitely a fairly heavy band lots of wicked guitar playing, some seriously fast riffage that is not very easy so it takes awhile to learn if you’re into playing their music. Start with the earliest album, I don’t think you’ll be sorry these dudes rip 🎸🤘🏻
@@andrewpardue3324 Just been listening to some, on first listen (don't shoot me) I was getting a cross between Ghost and Evergray, I'm liking it so far :o)
@@UphillGardener-ly5shwhat made you get a connection with trivium and ghost?🤣
I play jazz mate, I'm not fully conversant with rock and metal "parlance" similarly if someone played me some U Roy I would say it reminded me of Bob Marley, at which point a reggae aficionado might say "eh how TF did you get that?" ... :o)
I own the Gibson Les Paul Modern, and the newer 2nd Edition Alex Lifeson Epiphone Les Paul Custom which has the rounded access carve on the back like the one showcased here. It also comes equipped with a Floyd Rose 1000. I play it a lot more than the Gibson Les Paul Modern.
Got a smokin' deal on a Heritage H157 which had Fishman Fluence pickups installed. Always heard great things about Fishman, and as an EMG fan, couldn't wait to try them. Never got along with them. Kept the guitar, ditched the Fishman pickups. To each their own! 🍻
I had the same bad reaction, too many options to marry such an ugly pickup.
I tried fishman's in a keith merrow guitar. hated them.
I have several guitars with EMGs and several with fishman fluence- the fishman eat up batteries pretty often, where EMGs get much longer battery life.
@@johnholly7520 Yeah, I replaced the Fishman with EMG. The Fishman install already used full EMG wiring and switches, easy peasy swap!
I have blackouts and just installed a set of fishman modern in another Les paul. I think both are great. They are good if you’re looking for a little bit more hot sauce. Still love my burstbuckers but think P90s have the best bite.
Wow that covered some bases! From some very unique to totally classic tones. Cool review sounding awesome dude!
I’m such a huge Trivium fan and I’m glad you finally demoed one. Matt is one of my guitar and vocal heroes. You should do the 7 string (the white one) next!!
Strangest change is on the back of the pickups, most Fluence pickups have some sort of pin arrangement, similar to how EMG does (but fishman doesn’t do them on the pots)
I applaud him for demanding a lefty version of all of his signatures to be made. I can't even start to describe how bad it feels to see all these nice special editions of guitars and knowing there won't be a lefty. Doesn't even have to be a very special version actually, and it's not just a Gibson thing, it's every manufacturer.
The neck profile is almost like the Ibanez Wizard profile.
I've been waiting on this one since you said you snagged one up! nice way to start the day! :D
I have one of the white prototypes and it absolutely rocks!
When its in split coil mode, there's just one voicing. So each pickup has 3 modes. PAF, Modern and Singlecoil. There no PAF singlecoil or Modern singlecoil. Just one regular singlecoil voice.

Hello from Alaska back.
That's cool that he insists on having left handed versions available. Us lefty's need some love too! Lol
I have a Matt Heafy Dean ML Rising Sun in next to mint condition. It's really cool, and gets a lot praise from people.
I think Matt said the knobs were changed out to the production version because he found he yanks the speed knobs off on stage by accident quite often when he is changing voicing
I can tell you vibed with how long the playing samples went. I nerd to grab one of these for the shop.
Cool guitar and Mr Heafy seems like he cares about making sure his namesake is awesome for everyone.
i've got a 2014 signature in 6 string which had the axis cut and the new signature in 7 string, in my opinion the new neck cut plays easier when i'm trying to sweep on the higher frets but I definitely prefer the new signature fishman pickups
Good evening Trogley and fellow Troglodytes. Happy Holidays.
I think this is the first time that pickups with coil splits from within the Gibson hierarchy have sounded satisfying to me. Could it be the collaboration with Fishman that is proving fruitful for those people coming up with coil splits that sound much more authentic, like those coming from Gibson's competitors?
There's something inherent in the Fluence tech that makes a coil split actually a single coil, whereas passive HB splits/taps are always going to be a compromise and kinda weak feeling. With Fluence, they can control and sculpt the EQ and output to exact specifications of the artist, and they are usually referencing some kind of classic pickup.
I wish Matt would do a standard or more like a studio that would be an actual Gibson especially the 7 string version
Man, that is such an amazing sounding guitar. I’d definitely keep that in my arsenal
I like it, with dirt on it. Push, pull I don't like. But it looks good.
honestly i like this prototype more, change the pickups to be back and i prefer everything about this guitar, however i do own and old matt heafy mkh guitar and thats probably why
I regret selling mine but I didn't like its weight...everything else was fine...
My dream guitar had always been a 7 string LP, and that dream came true when I picked up the Origins 7 String Heafy bone white production model earlier this year. I just wish he'd spec'd them out with the Evertune for production.
You can send it in. There is a sale going on for installs right now.
@@zanzabar4ky7 ... Oh really?!?! Checking their website now. Thanks for the heads up!
I have no idea who Matt Heafy is, but now I'm wondering if the 3-piece backs on the Les Paul Moderns are because it helps with structural integrity for the neck-to-body joint carve. That way, they can cut into one big center block of wood instead of the joint of a 2-piece back.
I have 2 of the 7 string White Origins. I love them. My favorite guitars that I own or have played. I however DO NOT like Trivium. I have listened to some and its ok just not the type of metal I like. Too Epic/fantasy based and kinda boring. I wasnt sure on the fishman fluency but they are pretty good and dont just eat batteries like every other active set does. I have wanted a 7 string Les Paul since the first one I remember seeing. I think these are pretty great guitars. I play one every day or I at least try too. I want to try the ESP 8 string single cut next.
Do you think he’ll get the Gibson version soon? He has had a couple of posts of his original Custom lately
I use the matt heafy jazz 3 picks. Best ever.
This Heafy Prototype was a good find!
Please review a new fender japan release. Signature Strat model for Rei. R246
If you need/want a set of the pickups from the retail version, I changed mine out and they’re up for grabs. 😂
I really think you need to change your amp to something like a JCM 800.
The blues breaker is really just a bluesy rock amp, whereas a JCM 800 is more versatile, allowing you to go from rock to metal easier.
Not my thing but, it's still pretty cool. That neck heel and those pickup configurations on a $1100 guitar is a very good deal. But, it looks like the production models do not come with that same heel...bummer.
I went to high school with Matt Hafey, he was a bad ass guitarist back then too, his band won battle of the band the year i saw them, he wasn't the singer at the time and they opened with a Slipknot cover
Who makes the epicase for epiphone? I'd think that the heel diffeence comes down to the prototype style needs hand sandinfand the regular shelf type doesn't need as much hands on finishing....is it heel or heal? Forst time ive ever liked these pus
Neck heel. While a living tree can heal any damage, your guitars cannot.
Greetings and Merry Christmas Sir.
Nice guitar......love the Maiden during the demo....🤘
Isnt it pretty much the same as the epiphone prophecy Series with fishman pickups
These straplocks just slide and click over the strapbutton. You screw them in your strap as you would do with any other straplocks. I have black ones that came with my Les Paul Prophecy EX.
I like that particular model , but wouldn't own a current production model. That one looks like a modern/custom with Fishman pickups, which are really chug worthy set🤘
Hey how can I purchase the prototype?
Did you already sell this? It doesn’t show up on your site.
Yes, it sold about 3 hours after video posting
Hey Troggy, you know how the Mod shop guitars now have a nice decal on the back of the headstock, do you think the Stamped Mod guitars 2021-2024 could become rare/collectable?
I think it’ll cause confusion in the future but still only depend on how popular that one was to begin with and if people are actually looking for it
Almost has a telecaster sound, in one of those modes
Wow! Those Fishmans sound awesome.
Wouldn’t mind one of the left hand 7 strings.
Those are the Gibson OEM fishman they use in the epi prophecy. Those have really stiff push pull too.
If my memory serves me right, i do recall Matt saying he likes to rest his thumb on the heel joint so it doesnt slip or whatever. Something along those lines.
Looks great without the pick guard and poker chip
Would the prototypes be made in America and then built in China after they are finalized or is everything thing done in the Epiphone factory in China?
I had the black 7 string version in my cart at Zzounds today but was still thinking about it. When this video dropped (I’m a troglodyte) I decided it was meant to be.
Enjoy it!
aw yeah the Gregg Heffley signature guitar!
Gregg is sick! Great guitrasst
Chugging in drop D! Right on Austin! \m/
Now that is a real bargain! Sweet.
Curious, why did you spell passive as pasive?
Would love to see you get a higher gain amp to better demo these kinds of guitars
That’s one thing I’ve never had access to
I’d get a Marshall JVM or possibly consider a Kerry King Marshall signature amp , it’s basically a JCM 800 ( the amp everyone into metal loves from the 80’s,90’s , early 2000’s) with a few extra features. Also look at Laney they sound very nice as well.
Or if you’re looking for something a bit smaller I’m constantly hearing great things about the BOSS ( Roland) - Katana amp I still have yet to try one myself but I’m very interested in those as I already have 2 Marshall’s ( Valvestate and a smaller MDX ) and a Peavy Dual Super Chorus, and a number of smaller practice amps as well my favourite small practice amp is a Laney ( Toni Iommi’s favourite) I really love the sound that comes out of that tiny amp ! Sounds like a Marshall with the gain pinned out and volume cranked up even when it’s actually pretty low 😊 I’ve always found Marshall’s sound best when they’re really loud with the gain way up there. Not much is required in the way of distortion pedals etc as Marshall’s sound awesome straight into the amp unless your going for some very heavy distortion in which case I absolutely love the BOSS - Metal Zone with a BOSS DD3 Digital Delay just barely on. I truly cannot understand the bad reviews the Metal Zone pedal has gotten in the last few years! It is my favourite distortion pedal of all time. ( I also like my BOSS Hyper Metal and old school 1984 Pro Co Rat 🐀 a lot ) My guess is younger guys plug the Metal Zone in and pin out all the settings to max right away. The EQ Low /Mid/High knobs on this particular pedal is Extremely adjustable ! Way more than most pedals are I think. Take a bit of time to dial it in and it can sound like or surpass most other pedals out there. Definitely one of my favourites for sure , it will never leave my pedal board!I do want to get a Waza craft model though if I can ever find one! and I’m always looking for another regular one as a backup just incase something happens to this one.
@ I have a 100 watt katana. It’s really great. Sounds good at low volumes on the lowest power setting, and can scream at high volumes. Great for high gain (especially from pedals on the acoustic setting), and cleans too.
I'd love to see him get someone who can actually play demo the guitars instead of the same bland chord progressions and riffs he always plays.
Just bought it
Enjoy it!
Hope you like your new axe dude ! the cleans were really good I thought but it definitely shines as a chug monster! 🎸🤘🏻I’m a fairly big fan of Trivium and Matt’s playing so I liked that guitar quite a bit actually
🍻Cheers bro 🙂
Aluminum pickup covers
Epiphone is my favorite, always has been
I think the Prototype looks better than the final product, the chrome covers on the Fishmans makes it look more like his Gibson (it had chrome EMGs in it at one point) which it's based off of. Maybe I would have gone for chrome hardware as well just to complete the motif.
Is the neck C, U, or ? Is the guitar balanced?
D. Yes
I had a Prophecy SG with Fluence pickup and it sucked, the tone was great for clean tones but was too soft and mushy for any overdrive, I yanked them out and installed a pair of Pearly Gates and it transformed the guitar, now it shreds, and growls like it is supposed too. I'm not an active pickup guy, maybe another brand, or I got a bad set, either way, I am happy with PAFs.
Try the older prophecy‘s i own a Sg prophecy GX from 2009 with the Gibson Dirty Fingers its awesome ❤
I hate Cesar's Gibson because it locked the Axcess neck joint to the Custom Shop guitars
Cool guitar :)
Matt commented on the neck heel, something along the lines of the modern carve being better than the Custom shop version, if I remember correctly, it was someone elses point of view he took on (if I remember correctly, someone from Gibson) and no one could see the the point of view being correct..
He said something like ''it's when you wrap your hand around the heel area, it's better on the modern''
There is a comment on this video now from his advisor explaining it a bit further. I guess some guys prefer having an edge there to rest their thumb on - which I can kind of see. More wood in that area makes for a stronger guitar as well. Personal preference for sure but I think I’ll keep my preference
@Trog Many would agree with your preference.
Thanks for the Iron Maiden, Trogly!
interesting I just assumed matt kept them
Hello everyone!!
Guitar lottery story: got an Epi with the only mod disclosed was locking Klusons. Realized both the fancy push-pull coil splits were missing and suspected pickups were taken out as well. Lo and behold I flipped the pickups over Trogly style: Gibson 57-classic set! I’m not complaining about undisclosed mods.
no fret nibs, yaay

Kinda sucks when Matt ditched the EMGs for Fishman Fluence .
Are Epiphone prototypes made in China or Nashville?
Wondering the same thing
They would be made in china per the 15 in the middle of the serial number.
@@chrisburch3808thanks for the insight
Can confirm - China. Probably a small batch and they make revisions from there - get another small batch to make things perfect and then mass produce
Thanks for the follow up!

@KevinTheMetalhead oh yeah lol don't know why I couldn't remember that. Effing love that song
I’ve always loved the unique Les Paul sound, the only way to not make it sound like a Les Paul is use EMG or fishmans, not saying they sound bad, it just doesn’t sound like a Les Paul anymore
Gold hardware but nickel pickups?
I love Trivium, and I respect Matt. I've been a fan since highschool. However... I miss the "Dean Guitars" era of Trivium. His signature ML, Dime Razorback etc. Sick AF!!!!!
Z is for late. Busy watching G&L custom build.
G&L so underrated
Ok mr celebrity
About 4 years ago I borrowed a G&L Strat from a co worker for about a month and I have to say I loved everything about that guitar immediately! I definitely would like to own one in the future. Very comfortable , super low string action with zero fret buzz, great playing and sounding guitar 👍🏻 In fact I liked it so much that I very well might choose one of those G&L Strats over a Fender Stratocaster.

TROGG!!!!
We do know how to spell "passive" corect ha ha
Editor likes to throw in comment bait from time to time haha
It’s a very nice looking LP, I like the sculpting, I’m sure upper neck access is way better! Wow, an extra $900 for the prototype! Maybe it will be more valuable down the road?
I'd take that over a Gibson any day.
keep up w the Maiden
welp, that’s gonna crack.
I have the white left handed 6 string model and I wish it had that heel carve. I don’t know why they don’t go that way.
Are the Epiphone prototypes made in China or the US?
