There was a Khmer empire and there was a Siam empire. Neighboring countries do share some cultures. However, many cultures have been developed by the intelligence of Thai people for hundreds of years to be identities of Thainess. For example, the shawl-like garment which worn in different styles by many countries such as India (Saree), Thailand (Sbai/Sabai), and Laos (Pha-beiyng). Cambodia has shawl-like garment too, but it’s different style from what Cambodian youths wear today which imitate the Thai styles.
There are a few questions to prove the truth: "Thai boxing, traditional Thai clothing, Thai food, Thai dance, Songkran, and Loy Krathong" belong to Thailand or to Cambodians.
1)Do Cambodians have reliable photos or video clips? Is it old enough?
2)Have the elderly ever seen those things in Cambodia? For example, Khun Khmer, Loi Krathong, and Songkran.
3)Do Cambodians know how to produce Thai clothing? Do you know how to cook Thai food?
Of course, Cambodians cannot answer the question.

People often say that neighboring countries share common cultures. I believe that's a misconception. While Thailand shares borders with Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, and Malaysia, its art and culture exhibit both similarities and differences with these nations. Thailand has developed its own distinct identity in clothing, culture, language, and arts, distinguishing itself from Myanmar, Laos, and Malaysia. Clear territorial boundaries often lead to the development of unique characteristics in various aspects.
The point I want to convey is that it's crucial not to misunderstand that Thailand and Cambodia share identical cultures, arts, or attire. Cambodia distinctly separated from Thailand and fell under French colonial rule in 1867, 146 years ago. Meanwhile, Thailand has evolved its arts, culture, clothing, and cuisine in alignment with its own direction, adapting to global trends and circumstances.
Hence, it is implausible for Thailand and Cambodia to have nearly 100% identical cultures, national costumes, or other elements.
Cambodians often claim ownership of Angkor Wat, an 800-year-old temple, as a basis for rights infringement, copying everything from arts and culture to national costumes and cuisine from Thailand, even though these aspects have been developed by Thais after 1867.

I am Khmer from Battambang, and I live in the United States. I believe that Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia should be one country and stop looking at each other so negatively because of nationalism/patriotism. We share the same blood, beliefs, and cultures. The only major difference is that we speak different variations of languages and dialects due to modern boundaries that separate our countries and geopolitics, and because of that, there are bound to be variations/influences/changes and new ideas over time from external factors/forces. Many people in Northeastern Thailand speak or used to speak the same Khmer language as the people in Cambodia and have relatives on both sides, but they will lose their Khmer language and identity more and more over time because the Thai language is the predominant and national language of Thailand today. We also have a lot of Khmer in Southern Vietnam, known as Khmer Krom, that Vietnam took over their land and are more resistant to the Vietnamese because we don't share their culture and values. Khmer Krom tries really hard to maintain their identity/culture and a connection to their brothers/sisters in Cambodia. We should look at our three countries (Lao/Cambodia/Thailand), and maybe the Burmese, too, as one family/country within the greater ASEAN family. Our three countries are also greatly influenced economically by the Chinese or Chinese descendants who have assimilated into our societies today, and there is no one predominant race of Khmer or Thai or who should be better than whom. We're of the same human race from the same geographic location with a strong belief in Buddhism, and we can be kind and respectful to each other.

As DNA analysis of international. Cambodian's DNA doesn't have DNA of Ancient Mon (Khom)and India. Cambodian DNA are included African and Indonesian. They are not the original people on this Mainland. But Thai people have DNA of Ancient Mon mostly in SEA and including with Tai-Ka-dai and India. You can search Khmer DNA analysis in Google.

Hey, you guys. The third party is here, and listen to me. Khmer Krom has never been ruled by the Thai people, not even for a moment. I scrolled through a lot of comments like "Thai ruled Khmer for 400 years or Khmer's King learned in BangKok and he brought all the cultures there to his country bla bla stuff like that ONLY Khmer Kandal (Cambodia now) and Khmer Surin (Thailand now) in that domanited period by Siam but Khmer Krom NEVER. I'm sure that everything in Khmer Krom, from ancient times to modern days, is still the same. Everything like architecture, costumes, food, holidays, spells, musical instruments, millennial pagodas,etc. During the Vietnam War with America, my dad told me that my grandfather gave him an amulet to hold in his mouth in order to protect him from bullets and bombs. When the Viet Cong occupied South Vietnam, many soldiers from the old regime were pursued by the Communists. My father told me that there was a man who almost got killed, but he ran into Khmer's pagoda and begged the monks to save his life. Then he was given an invisible amulet, and he miraculously escaped. I'm a mixed-race offspring (Khmer and Chinese). My maternal ancestors are Hokkien Chinese. Khmer Krom people have lived here for over a millennium; even Chinese people have just immigrated for over 200 years. I don't know clearly about Siam or Thai people, so I wouldn't say anything about them because I don't have deep knowledge about them. But do not say that Khmer people are not native or don't have any culture and have to adapt from somewhere else. Take your words back if you have no knowledge about other people. I'm sick of people who just get information from one side to prove the truth.
P/S: To Khmer people, you guys shouldn't say Thai coppied because you're not them and don't fully know about them. In ancient times, maybe we're the ones just like mythology, as old people said. It's like Chinese people on the mainland. There are many ethnicities, but the culture looks similar and slightly different. Even Viet Nam (Bách Việt, Yue people) and China (Hán, Han people) are really similar. Moreover, Pakistan and India, Malaysia and Indonesia, Arab areas, etc. But if anybody says Khmer coppied, let my story prove it to them.

Khmer people have descended for the Khmer Angkor era from the Khmer empire. Cambodian/Khmer people are native to the land of Cambodia. Thai people migrated from China and adopted the Khmer culture and modified it to be their own. Recently, some Khmer people are copying the modern Thai styles. LOL, chill people. Khmer or Cambodian are inspire by the culture from the Khmer Empire especially from all the Apsara designed on Angkor Wat. Now, the entire region are deeply influence from the past until these day. Cambodian styles, it is what it is, you can see them in many old Cambodian movies from the Golden Years. At the time, before the civil war and before many culture were destroyed, Khmer movies were really popular in the region, Thailand included. Now, I have to admit, Cambodian is starting over from year zero but many progress had been made. Just because Cambodian are making a comeback, Thailand shouldn't worry too much. We are neighbors for thousand of years, cultures get influence both way but overall, they all came from the Angkor Empire.
