BITTER MELON - PLANTING, POTTING UP & SETTING IN THE GARDEN (OAG 2015)

  • This is my video on growing Bitter Melon or the Japanese name for it is “Goya”.
    Unless you grew up eating this vegetable you would probably not like it because it really is bitter.
    The Okinawa people are one of the cultures in the world that enjoy a long life span and Goya is one of their staple vegetables. Does it contribute to their longevity, some think so.
    It is very easy to grow, no pests bother it so there is no need to spray it, nor do the deer eat it.
    See my video on making the potting mix: • PLANTING - POTTING MIX...
    See my video on making the horse manure compost at: • COMPOST PILE MAKING (...

    Very nice video! Can you please share what kind of seed starting mix and potting soil you use to sow your seeds and later transplant your plants in? I saw in the video that each one of your seeds have germinated beautifully and growing. I believe the seed starting soil plays a very important role in germinating any kind of seeds. Also what kind of fertilizer you use once they start to grow? Thanks.

    Hi, thanks for the video.Could you please give information in detail how to germinate bitter melon seeds. As I understood, your seeds were wet before you planted them. How many hours you kept them in water? What is the regularity of irrigation after planting? Did you keep planted seeds in a dark place till they germinate?.. Once I tried to germinate bitter kelon seeds, but I failed, need help for the second try...

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Mia Mia Take a look at my video on planting the seeds at: BITTER MELON GROWING - [PART 2] (OAG 2015) th-cam.com/channels/bsmRMHLiGeecgxBMuEIBqA.html
      Now to answer your questions: Were the seeds wet? My answer: It doesn't matter, I usually just put the seeds in soil blocks and grow them that way. The plants are a warm weather plant so you need to wait until the weather is warm. Next question: How many hours did I keep them in water? My answer: I didn't keep them in water , but if I were going to do it that way I would keep them in water at least 24 hours. Next question: What is the regularity of irrigation after planting? My answer: Are you talking about planting the seeds or the plants? The seeds need to be kept moist as you would any other seeds you are trying to sprout. The plants in the ground need to be watered, (depending on if you get rain and how dry your area is), at least once a week. Next question: Do I keep the seeds in a dark place till they germinate? My answer: No, I usually germinate the seeds either outside if it is warm or under grow lights inside the house, the main thing is it must be warm and keep the germinating potting mix moist.
      If you met these conditions and still didn't get germination, I would suspect that the seeds you used were no good.

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Johnny, if your tomato plants are growing well, that is big, and you only get 5 or so tomatoes, I would suspect pollination of the blooms might be the problem. Take a look at my video on tomato blossom pollination at: th-cam.com/video/jxoalbrTBiM/w-d-xo.html
      No, it is not too late to fertilize. I would mix some Miracle Grow tomato fertilizer (red color) and pour about one gallons round each plant.

    others like waste on septic tank thats been dried for how many months usually called human manure people use it as compost in growing vegies, is it advisable?

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      For hundreds if not thousands of years the Asians used human waste on their crops, when I first went to Japan we were advised to not eat any locally grown produce. The problem was that Cholera was spread by human waste on crops. If you are not concerned about the spread of disease then it might be okay, as for me, no, I don't want any human waste, dried, composted or any other way, on food that I am going to eat. Actually I don't seem to have any luck growing bitter melon. I'm not sure why but they never sprout & I've tried a couple of years. I'ld rather buy the melons themselves when you harvest, would that work? I have your email somewhere & will contact you again & let you know. I'ld rather not leave my email in public view. Thanks

    • @OldAlabamaGardener
      @OldAlabamaGardener  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The reason (most likely) the seeds don't sprout is that the seeds you are using aren't mature, especially if you collected seeds from a bitter melon you bought at a store. I have sent seeds to people and with my instructions they are successful in growing this melon. As to buying melons from me, I don't know if they would ship well. I understand about not wanting to put your e-mail in public, what I do if you want to put your e-mail here is I will copy it and then remove it. How much more difficult must it have been to grow plants using just the elements before additives such as prepackaged bone meal and fertilizer were developed.

    • @OldAlabamaGardener

But I appreciate watching your videos. They give me insight into another life and another path :) Thanks OldAlabamaGardener

    you gave so much shock to the baby plant and to be honest with you sir, you should have left some empty space underneath so the roots can grow fast so it can have room for oxygen and other needs.

      Last year I planted in my kitchen garden in Canada and got a good crop. This year I am waiting for summer to arrive to sow again. I already planted the seeds in containers. But the thing is, I envy you Mr Awesome Alabama Gardner, you are having such a fun in a farm and I am rotting in concrete jungle with 9-5 office job.
