Greg is that type of friend you need for life. You can tell the dude deeply understands Tommy, and looks to be defensive of him when it appears the audience is laughing at him (not with him). A good bloke.
look at it this way, at the end of the day his best friend is the only mildly interesting person on the stage, surrounded by a bunch of hollywood low life parasites.
I really cannot undersell Greg Sestero as a person and as a writer. He's brilliant. His bravery in telling his story I wish was appreciated more. The book is just spellbinding.
It IS a great book but I wouldn't describe it as "bravery". It's not like Tommy Wiseau was going to put a hit out on Greg for making him look bad. Tommy got a little peeved then forgave him almost immediately (which was probably just how Greg expected Tommy to act). Tommy needs Greg just as much as Greg needs Tommy. He wasn't going to end their friendship.
Honestly, I was a little mad at Greg after reading the book. I know Tommy recovered, but I can just imagine the sense of betrayal he felt after sharing such closely guarded secrets with someone, and then they write a tell all book about the things he said and did. I felt for Tommy, and I really identified and felt like I understood him as a human being. Ultimately, it was for his own good that the book was written (you can't keep secrets forever, they'll eat you up inside, even if they don't actually matter much) and I ended up forgiving Greg, just like Tommy must have. It's actually really amazing that I was impacted so much by the book. The movie also helped bring back to humanity the enigma that is Tommy. Tommy's so larger than life, you can forget that the man written about in the book and the spectacle he presents are the same person.
Allison Auld Disclosing details of Tommy isn't what I'm describing when I say "bravery." Greg is opening up on the biggest humiliation of his life. That's brave.
E&Entertainment Well of course but like I said since he was in the position to decide what would be final, or his own ideas, of course he wouldn't change anything
Greg is a hidden genius. It was his book with his co-writer that makes the story really special. Also, for some reason he doesn't seem to enjoy these Q&A's or interviews. Maybe because Tommy gets all the attention. Greg here is the real artist.
I love how much credit James Franco gave to Tommy and his crew in the publicity of this film. I've never seen better credits given to an original story, hell even JK Rowling wasn't this involved in Harry Potter cinema
Which is strange to me because he wrote the book in which this movie is based, so everything that's happening now is because of him. I dont get why feel ashamed.
I agree I think its because in the book he really opens up about how tommy has manipulated him and was really hard to be friends with some times. and then they make this movie based off the book but leave a lot out of how greg suffered, and paint him in a picture of like being so willing to do the movie and make Tommy look like a hero. At least that's what I get from interviews and reviews. I understand both sides if that is the case, I understand why they are making it a love letter to tommy and the room but I understand if greg is mad because they basically ignored what he went through. again all this is just from what I've read I obviously haven't seen it
I somewhat agree with you. However, someone that watched the film told me there's a great amount of Greg's story in it. Tommy is not the star, Greg and Tommy are the stars of the story based on what this person told me. They went through a lot together and Greg suffered for most of it and its depicted in the film. This, based on what this person told me, I have no idea cause I haven't seen it.
Wilmer Jael yeah I mean I'm definitely only going off of what I read, but like what I mean is I read that in the movie they make it seem like Greg is all on board to act in the movie from the get go where as in the book/real life he never wanted to do it, and tommy basically manipulated him with money to do it. So like yes they have both of there story, but Greg seems more made to make tommy look good? You know what I mean. Again. Personally I see both sides why they would do that. They want to make a lighthearted movie not a dark one. But thats not the question the question is why Greg always looks like he hates his life in these q&as and thats my theory. But regardless. I can't wait for the movie. :)
I think he's a pretty shy guy and that can translate as "sad" sometimes. I hope he's not actually sad. Between this movie and "Best Friends", he's got a lot going on. It would be a shame if he were depressed and not able to enjoy his successes.
Everyone's laughing with Greg though, because they know that he's completely self aware. Sure they laugh at his terrible acting in 'The Room', but I'm sure he knows it's crap too. Tommy on the other hand...
at this point everybody is laughing WITH them...look, they did the fucking worst movie they could, money, script etc. and almost 15 years later, still, people watch it and Franco makes a movie based on makeing of The Room, kudos to all of them
mburzzzawa I respect your opinion but you need to watch more of the interviews they have done recently and you will understand what I'm talking about. James makes fun of the man and Seth does too at times.
No. I mean even in this interview Tommy makes fun, "I did not hit her I did not". It's like seth Rogan making fun of himself in that terrible movie The Green Hornet-yes it was bad, yes he acknowledges it, yes he knows everyone is making fun of it so why shouldn't he. Actors make terrible movies, and they know it. Extreme real life people with extreme personalities like Tommy are of course laughed at/with. Even Seth will make fun of James Franco for his extreme personality (professor, writer, actor, director, author, poet, visual artist, extrovert, multiple projects all at once) his crappy films and his insane passions. I mean, James Franco coordinated his own Roast, where his friends not only made fun of him but he also made fun of himself because he knows that he can come off as ridiculous and he knows he is extreme. There is something amazing though about people that keep going no matter what others think (something James and Tommy have in common). If this group of friends (James, Seth, Jonah, etc) are able to make fun of eachothers quirks and still have a good time....why should they treat Tommy different? At the end of the day they do respect him and as actors and directors of bad and brilliant projects they all are vibing and having a good time.
1:37 Am I the only one who finds it hilarious that Tommy said, DAVEY Franco right? and then I assume he looked at James for confirmation, since he always calls his brother Davey 😂😂😂 This man is a genius
Tiff, thank you for posting this unmissable film artifact. Like all the other stuff you're posting now...but this one I wanted to be there so badly and missed out on the ticket...knew some magic like this was occurring and I laughed so hard watching this.
It's so difficult to pin Greg's intentions in all of this. I can't tell if he's either, A) Weird like Tommy, and they're weird together, being magnetized by Tommy as his opposite, while socially trying to save face by behaving like he's self aware of Tommy B) Sticking around because Tommy is very clearly brain damaged, which would have come from his car accident prior (think less severe Gary Busey), and is extremely sympathetic about it. C) Using Tommy as a cash cow - milking the attention and notoriety from both The Room and The Disaster Artist. D) A mixture of all of the above.
Bob Smith Ah yes I forgot that he was actually considering making his character a Vampire. I don't know if that would have made the movie worse in a good way or just worse.
Probably but then he should do something that has nothing to do with Tommy. "The Disaster Artist" (book and movie) are primarily Tommy's story. Tommy is his co-lead in the new movie he wrote (Best Friends). Greg seems to view his relationship with Tommy as an umbilical cord when it might turn out being a noose around his neck instead (metaphorically speaking).
I might be very crazy, but 7:06, sexual tension vibes from Greg looking at Tommy He looks very unconfortable. Tommy is fascinating but I guess it might be overhelming knowing so much about him and keep it secret. He can't be himself and talk freely to mantain Tommy's wishes. That must be hard.
I'm more than half way through reading THE DISASTER ARTIST. Long story short, this book is brilliant and compelling yet so disturbing I'm having nightmares. Is it just me or does any one else think that Tommy is just part of another in a long line of entertainment industry psychological operations? Long story short, seeing Tommy always makes me smile... at least when I'm awake.
I think so: Tommy Wiseau is a fucking genius! He put Ed Wood under his belt with just one parody of typical modern Hollywood melodramas. He beat him like a child with the help of one movie *"The Room".* U Just think guys - Ed Wood made a lot of films to stay in people's memory as the worst director. And for Tommy, just one movie was enough for a lot of people to know about him. And most importantly, people love Tommy. I think that Tommy had a goal - to break the record of Wood's fame(popularity). It is not surprising that in the film *"Best F(r)iends",* the characters watch Ed's films in the second part of the film, Tommy hints to us... but not everyone understands what he is hinting at. Well seeing as how Greg is the one making the most money out of this movie since it is based off of his book, I think Tommy knows that and is a bit jealous.
I feel for Greg, seems like he knows people are not laughing with them, but laughing at them. I hope he received lots of money for the rights of his book to be adapted into the movie.
Poor Greg, he looks like hes being dragged around by the muppet Tommy. Looks like Tommy has something over Greg, probably MONEY. Someone need to look into Gregs safety
I love Greg and Tommy but I wish they had gotten Johnny Depp for Tommy's role. James Franco comes across as kind of a jerk to me. The way he drapes his hand across Greg's shoulder like he's a statue that Franco owns and then dismisses Tommy ("Don't worry about it, Tommy.") And his crack about Greg missing the sexual tension in his and Tommy's friendship. It all smacked of serving to remind them, "I'm the big star here." Cram your Oscar, Franco. You need good material to win them in the first place. Appreciate and respect other creatives. You're not all that. Tommy Wiseau is the real deal.
Allison Auld Johnny Depp is an abuser and is a much bigger douche than james ever is. James is a big star and stop lying to yourself by saying tommy is the "real deal". Fabs of the room needs to learn to lets loose and get a grip. Learn to take a joke and dont take life too seriously, learn from your senpai Tommy
Allison Auld If you read The Disaster Artist then you would know the sexual tension quip was right on. And to say Franco is a douche in comparison to Depp? You really don't see the contradiction in that statement do you? Tommy is the real deal? In what way? He's a horrible actor, writer, director, producer.... are you being sarcastic?
I read "The Disaster Artist" and I didn't say there wasn't sexual tension. But why make a quip about it at an industry event when it could be embarrassing to both Greg and Tommy? As far as Depp, I don't know what actually happened between him and his (former?) wife. Do you? What I do know is that I never saw video of him acting flippant and dismissive towards his creative partners the way Franco is acting here. As far as Tommy being the "real deal", he is. He worked hard and he made his dream come true. Greg called him the most "genuine" and "sincere" dreamer he's ever known. To me , that's being the "real deal". I don't care how many Oscars Tommy does (or doesn't) have. Mr. Fake-Hollywood-Franco can stick his dismissive attitude.
People need to remember that this is Greg's book. I don't think he has gotten enough credit which is probably why he looks so out of it!
R1ZZ3N I mean, they mention it in every interview. Not like the Room was his movie either, he did use it as a basis for his novel after all.
But Gregs book would have never happened without Tommy.
@@mgloco88 would the room have been made without greg though. think about it.
When Greg isn’t smiling he goes straight into a dead eyed stare, like he’s seen some shit he can’t get out of his head....
Stage fright
The dude used to live with Tommy Wiseau, I bet he has seem some shit he cant get out of his head lol
He’s just very shy
he looks ok shut up bitch

Awww, "best friends do exist". Such a yin and yang dynamic between Tommy and Greg, it's a fascinating relationship.
Tommy gives zero fucks about last names, thats gregs department
I think secretly this man tommy is a genius, he made the worst movie known to man and the people love it lol. Genius
SlowMotion It wasn't on purpose though. It was bad writing with no one to tell him to edit it, since he wrote/directed/starred in it.
Cody Sorem There was a lot of people to tell him it was bad! He just doesn't give a fuck
He's like Ed Wood. People like them only come around once in a while.
E&Entertainment Well of course but like I said since he was in the position to decide what would be final, or his own ideas, of course he wouldn't change anything
nah
I truly believe Johnny Depp would have done an incredible job of playing Tommy. I'd love to see Johnny do some Tommy impersonations
Greg Sestero is the man behind the whole thing.
Greg is a hidden genius. It was his book with his co-writer that makes the story really special. Also, for some reason he doesn't seem to enjoy these Q&A's or interviews. Maybe because Tommy gets all the attention. Greg here is the real artist.
But Tommy is what made the movie so funny in a bad way.
I remember reading somewhere in The Disaster Artist that Greg has some anxiety issues, mainly stage fright.
Clark Griswold great point.
Veron Chung that makes sense. The movie or the book give us a sense about his inhibitions of presenting himself in a crowd or on stage.
what if in the next few years tommy makes a movie about making this movie
Would it not be mmore suprising if he didn't?
Yeah, Greg's not happy.
He wrote the book tho
I love how much credit James Franco gave to Tommy and his crew in the publicity of this film. I've never seen better credits given to an original story, hell even JK Rowling wasn't this involved in Harry Potter cinema

Andy Freeman dammit, I can't stop laughing at that!
People are poking fun at tommy, he’s a good sport about it though..he’s different, very much so. Either he’s a complex thinker or he’s delusional...
He's definitely delusional, he managed to convince himself that he's great, his movie's great, and any criticisms of him or his work are invalid.

Underleaf76 Jealous? This is a guy whose bank account was deacribed as a "bottomless pit". I don't think he's jealous lol
