Brilliant she was as a school teacher adding her songs to rock. How many times as kids we sang these songs . We just couldn't get enough. after 63 years I still get a kick out of it. Love her.
I went to a WGH Radio--sponsored show, which included Shirley Ellis. I had a front row seat, having gotten a “comp” from WGH. During her act, she leaned over the front of the stage and asked for names she could use while singing her hit record. I blurted out my on-air pseudonym “Chuck!” She smiled, and waved a scolding finger at me and said, “Naughty Boy!”.
Totally agree. In fact, I couldn't have said it better myself, Brian! Or should I say.... Brian, Brian, Bo-Ryan, Bonanna fanna foe Fie-an Fee fi moe Mayan Brian!
For my money, the best "novelty" song ever. I agree with Brian Newell, this absolutely ROCKS. The music track is just about one of the funkiest, gutsiest things from the 60s. And HUGE thanks for posting this unedited version. NEVER heard this before.
Oh Miss Ellis you were good!!!!! Gone 14 years now, but never forgotten!!! I don't know why they call this a novelty song! You could sing! And the song has stood the test of time.
One of my favorite songs when I was a 7-year old growing up in San Antonio, TX. I used to do The Name Game for all my 30+ relatives, and they would all get a kick out of it
Heard it for the first time when I was in the Army in Korea in 1965. I always loved the song with its fast moving tempo.....it brings back so many memories
I'm done 👍❤️✅👍✅👍✅👍✅👍✅👍✅👍✅mki and it will get a better time of time and then you will have it for a few weeks so you have the right ▶️▶️▶️▶️▶️👍▶️👍▶️👍❤️▶️▶️👍❤️▶️👍❤️😊😊▶️👍❤️ I'm so proud to you to help with my heart ❤️❤️❤️❤️😊❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😊😊❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yes it's true that this is one of Shirley's best "rhyme songs, clapping songs and word play songs that were fun and infectious"-- however, her "Nitty Gritty" is even more superb.
Absolutely agree the Real Nitty Gritty is like the purest form of all the songs that came after. That song is amazing. Thank you, Shirley Ellis and Lincoln Chase!
This "version" would be known as a "stage" tape. The song was recorded on 4-track machines. So the first "Stage Tape" would consist of the tracking session. That would be the session where the music is recorded. This would include (in this particular case) drums, bass, rhythm guitar, electric guitar and I faintly hear a piano. That would then get "bounced" to a single track on a separate 4-track tape.... THIS tape. The next session on this stage would've been the horn overdubs that we hear in the left channel. We now have TWO full tracks on our new FOUR TRACK tape. The next two sessions would consist of lead vocals and backing vocals which are heard in the center and right channels respectively. This now completes all Four Tracks of this tape. Why does the music go on for so long? Well, generally speaking, whoever recorded the music did not have the vocalist present and they would therefore record more than necessary. This is why so many songs (like this one) end in a fade out. When the vocalist(s) complete their portion of the song, the song then just fades out. The Stereo "Master Tape" would fade by about the 3-minute mark.
Never heard this version.....But wasn't "The Nitty Gritty" her first hit? You never cease to amaze me, with your clear sound and the excellent visuals!!! Keep them comin our way, paisano!!!!... all the BEST from NYC!!!!
Joey....you are absolutely right...."Nitty Gritty"...her first hit in 1963. Thanks for your endless support...and this time for keeping me an honest guy!
I put this on my playlist on YT. "1960's Super Fantastic Music. Mind Blowing. It's All Too Much." Great song. I never heard the 6 minute version before and I'm really digging on those drums and sax and bass. Driving.
I really dig this long version because of the drumming. It goes on for about 3 mins after the singing. I remember when this came out in the '60s and we used to dance to it all the time.
wow never heard the unedited version ... this song came out when I was in the 1st grade - we sang it all year on the playground ... I'm sure the nuns were sick of it by the end of the year!!
This reminds me of a tv game show. I always visualized her with a microphone like a game show host giving out prizes for a person who can correctly repeat what she is saying. 😂
www.charlescalello.com - He's a former member of the Four Seasons and he did the arrangement and wrote all the horn licks for this song. Click on "Career" and then "1960's" and read Calello's comments about how he wrote the music for "Name Game". Interesting stuff.
Thank you for uploading this. This is an early mix down before the official 2:30 or so 45 rpm was released. Was this recorded with The Wrecking Crew? That's some sweet instrumental track. I just saw the movie "Poms" with my wife and they ran credits over this song. I remembered it from 5th grade and had to look it up.
Nope no Wrecking Crew people on this one. Just the best NYC session musicians in town at that time. People think they played on everything but they are sadly mistaken
I don't know why they ever decided to make it shorter for the 'edit'. The best part is the music after she stops singing! Whole thing should have been released without ever editing it-ever!
This is actually an extended edit that repeats the main body of the song without the vocal track. Love your channel and its unusual finds, like this one.
This song was a huge hit. Millions of kids learned how to do this and sang it endlessly at school. I was one of them in 1965.

Brilliant she was as a school teacher adding her songs to rock. How many times as kids we sang these songs . We just couldn't get enough. after 63 years I still get a kick out of it. Love her.
I'll be 65 next month and this song always delivered.
69 and still remember!!
74 and STILL (thank heaven above!!!) remember!!!
SHE was a TEACHER?!? OMG!!! What “cred” she must have gotten from her students if they knew this came from her!!!
I went to a WGH Radio--sponsored show, which included Shirley Ellis. I had a front row seat, having gotten a “comp” from WGH. Ahahaha, great memory.
This may be considered a novelty song but it rocks like nobody's business.

Couldn't agree more. Groovy is not a word I usually use, but you couldn't speak about this song without 💖
Big time!!

Lmao Deep 😂👌😳

TIL how music is recorded. Thanks for the education.
That is so interesting! I was wondering why the bridge was so long at the end! I kept thinking that she was going to sing another stanza!
@@wolfwolf1975
I like this extended version-songs were short back in the day. I don’t think this version was on my 45.
Awesome version and thanks for sharing. What a great song!
Thanks!

Excellent production on this record. What a swinging band!

This slaps so hard
What a brilliant woman!
Awesome version!!!
Vitor...thanks so much!!
My brother has the 45!!
This is where DMX got the spirit of saying all those names
American Horror Story revived this song. I wish the B-52's would have done a cover of this song. Perfect fit!
I love this song and I am 10!
This reminds me of a tv game show. I always visualized her with a microphone like a game show host giving out prizes for a person who can correctly repeat what she is saying. 😂
Between this and the clapping song this girl is hard to keep up with.
I remember my older siblings playing this record when I was in kindergarten
A jump rope song of the 1950's.
The name game song is probably older than me (78). It has fill in music but the tune to the name rhymes is OLD.
AHS Jéssica Lange😍
2:36 pure dance bliss
The ride starts at 2:53
we used to watch a show on TV after school around 1965 where some eggs always sang this song . Does any one remember the name of the show ?
The Rock n' Roll version of the Tree Stooges' 'Swinging Alphabet'
Who is in the rhythm section? They are smok'n hot!!

The real songs ♥️
Chuck 😂 The Name Game
so much fun
Before now I've only ever heard the Tiny Toons version where Elmyra refused to do "Plucky"
The FULL SESSION TAKE ! (in TRUE STEREO) !!!

@@saml.williams6321 Thanks for the clarity
Unedited just means that it's the long version with the long musical interlude. She didn't attempt the name "Chuck"...
Memories we have family reunions all my girl cousins used to do hand jive to this song
Is this your own extended version, or is this sourced as is from vinyl? I can't find it listed anywhere! Love the breaks!
I don't know why they ever decided to make it shorter for the 'edit'. The best part is the music after she stops singing! Whole thing should have been released without ever editing it-ever!
In the old days songs had to be about two and a half minutes to get played on the radio. Songs longer than this were cut down to fit.
🙏
"And there isn't any name that I can't rhyme."...........Muammar! My name is Muammar. Do me next!

hola, alguien sabe donde se puede encontrar la instrumental completa???
This is actually an extended edit that repeats the main body of the song without the vocal track. Love your channel and its unusual finds, like this one.
