    The kids didn't even know how to turn the lights on. They didn't even see the helicopter watching them. What goes on in the heads of teenagers is tragic and confusing.

    The fact that the gun involved has not been tracked or recorded in over 50 years is far more likely because it has been in the original owner's possession all that time until it was stolen from their home.
    The Sheriff's opinion that it was passed around between criminals for 50 years would have made it FAR more likely to have popped up on their radar before now.
    The sheriff has got this one backwards. Most likely the gun has been in the hands of law abiding gun owner/s for over 5 decades.

      15 years olds can have a learners permit to drive in Florida. Nobody 15 years of age in Florida can conceal carry or buy a firearm or obtain a concealed carry permit.

If your kids are the same age, it's just plain ignorant to believe they have never, or never will sneak out of the house at some point in their lives. More kids have done this than you could possibly imagine. Not to do bad things necessarily, but to get out and have fun. I wouldn't bet my ass, I'd lose it.

      I do not question the american way of life - it still represents freedom and the possibility to "make it if you try".
      As from outside the US it seems ( to me ), that the distorted thing is the pure amount of crime in your nation.

    Sheriff is absolutely correct about pistols like that. They are almost NEVER OBTAINED LEGALLY FROM LEGITIMATE SOURCES.

      I have a dozen of those small .25 caliber pistols made in Germany, Italy, USA etc. All of them bought legally.
      99.9% of such guns are bought legally, and are in law abiding hands.

      That's because most likely that is when it was bought new and has been in the same hands for 50 years until it was stolen from the owner's home.

    I believe they should have been chased. The sheriff said himself, that they WILL pursue if someone is acting in such a way that puts other people in danger. These perps stole a high-powered vehicle, operated it without lights, at very high speed, at night, along an avenue with many crosswalks and cross-traffic. Isn't that the very definition of danger to society?

    Some places used to have laws against leaving keys in unlocked vehicles accessible to the public. Haven't heard any thing about such laws lately. Like to see laws against leaving weapons in unlocked/unattended vehicles unless secured in a safe or with a cable. How about curfew laws too?

      When I was real young I admit I stole my neighbors car and took it joy riding. I was caught and charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle instead of grand theft because the keys were left in the ignition. If I had to obtain the keys from the home or his person then the charges would have been higher. They were going to charge the neighbor with something called aiding or contributing because the keys were left in the car. In the end, the charges were dropped for us both.

      During the news conference, the sheriff said the helicopter and the deputies were on another call near the area when the helicopter spotted the 3 walking down the street at 3am. The helicopter then asked for any available units.

      That’s only the sheriffs office. They aren’t the only police agency. Cities, at least those of decent size, have their own departments so they could pursue.

      They attempted to stop the car. They gave the driver some time to stop but once he accelerated after refusing to pull over. They immediately turned off there lights and siren.

      They pursued the thugs UNTIL the kid floored it and sped away from the police. Then they turned off their emergency lights and slowed down. Of course the police are going to try to pull the kids over, but once they sped off the police broke pursuit. Then the kids took it from their.
