As I always understood it from an interview with Mick Fleetwood, it was Clifford Davis' idea to recruit "a lead singer who can start the crowd boogying" or words to that effect after Kirwan was fired. Fleetwood Mac had always been a band where musicians shared lead vocals prior to this. A non-instrumental frontman to take over the lead vocals wasn't something the band needed in terms of musical dynamic at the time hence why when Dave was dismissed he wasn't replaced. Recruiting Dave was a Clifford Davis idea, not a Fleetwood Mac one. OK so later they got Stevie Nicks but that was only because Lindsey Buckingham wouldn't join without her (which is interesting given how she basically knifed him in the back in 2018).
