I wish they were more common. They have such character and uniqueness. I love their voice, especially combined with the morning chorus.

100%. It would be great hearing them in more places.
Haven't met them in person yet myself, but it will be a great day when I do. :)

What usual wattles--the unusual placement is as striking as the vivid blue coloring. New Zealand must have the greatest variety of birds of any small isolated region on Earth.

I grew up in Te Awamutu, Waikato but my dad has a homestead on the west coast near Kawhia.
I use to see these birds all the time out there, jumping from tree to tree all the time, I never knew they were so endangered and how lucky I was to see them in abundance in the early 2000. They were literally like squirrels.

This birds song reminds me of a door hinge, missed opportunity for a name there xD they look like they’ve got blue berries stuck between their beaks 😂

My dad walked in on me watching this and asked "What is that awful noise?" when he heard the bird's call.

Good thing they've shown a remarkable ability to jump back up in their numbers. Gives me more hope in that regard for the potentially living South Island kokako if they still persist in some small number.

It’s a cool, looking bird, almost looks fake very sleek. The sounds are almost a sound effect generator. Very nice.

You do such a great job for introducing people to the uniqueness of your native bird fauna. I'm so thankful for this because I regard this as incredibly important for nature as a whole.

Another thing that helps with their ongoing conservation is the fact that they have a very broad, generalist diet. If they had more specific dietary needs we likely wouldn't be seeing the success we have with them.

Why don’t you get to make a suggestion creating a TH-cam Videos that’s all about the Extinct WattleBird Species of New Zealand called the Huia (Heteralocha acutirostris) on the next New Zealand Bird Of The Week coming up next?!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍👍👍👍👍

Maybe it's just their coloration queuing me to think differently about them, but their songs sound so.. sad.

At the bottom right, on the control bar of the video there is a Gear icon. If you click that it takes you to the Settings. There you can select a slower speed for playback. Three quarters, half, or quarter speed. It doesn't alter the pitch
      Enjoy! :-)
