The first game of the last 8 saw Argentina and a Yugoslav side, reduced to 10 men after only half an hour, play out a goalless stalemate. The holders reached the semi-finals after winning the penalty shoot-out 3--2, despite Maradona having his penalty saved. A second Argentine miss (by Pedro Troglio) looked to have eliminated them until goalkeeper Sergio Goycochea -- playing because first choice Nery Pumpido broke his leg during the group stage -- rescued his side by stopping the Yugoslavs' final two spotkicks.

My dad is from Montenegro and my mom Kosovo. I was 4 when this game took place and to this day my dad says, had Yugoslavia not split, they would have won 3 world cups since this time period. Those teams were so talented.
I was 4 in 1990, I'm French and at times, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia and USSR were very good teams. We didn't like play against them. And from 1987 to 1994, it was dark ages for France national team.
After that came west world and destroyed Yugoslavia... and all hopes and dreams a gone..

How happy I was then that Argentina won with Maradona and was promoted to the best four in the championship. In the match against Italy, I did not give them a lot of chances, and they, headed by Maradona, Caniggia and the amazing Goycochea, still won with them. It is a pity that Caniggia did not play in the final against Germany. Thank you divine Diego Armando Maradona for wonderful football moments.

This was a useful experience for a few of the Yugo players. The year after this, many of them were in the Red Star Belgrade side that won the European Cup in a shoot out.....
Shit after this our country was not stable at all. War broke out and nasty things happend. When the leader of Yugoslavia Tito passed away that country was never the same. Imagine if war never happend how much talent that country had. Croatia alone almost won Worldcup. Imagine Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Kosovo. When Tito died that was one of the saddest day. He was bad ass leader every leader welcomed him America, Korea, China. Just type in Tito Korea. He is the only president that smoked a cigar in White House
@@hexoroid nothing would have happened bc Modric would sit on a bench so the likes of Milinkovic Savic could play. That was always the problem of Yugoslavia National Team. Best players sitting on the bench so the less talented players from certain republics could play.

@@robotube7361 1982. Dinamo was Champion of Yugoslavia. Zajec was the only player playing in the starting lineup. The only other Dinamo player that was called up was Deveric. Mlinaric, who was one of the best players in the league that season wasn't even called for the WC, Kranjcar, who dominated the league, wasn't called up, Vlak wasn't called up. But players like Sljivo, Sestic, Svilar, Krmpotic, Pantelic, Zivkovic, Pasic were there. The result rewarded the selection.
After all, the results of National teams after Yugoslavia broke up, speak for themselves.

A tek je dolazilo zlatno doba Ju fudbala . A u svim sportovima smo bili najbolji to je fenomen USA koja je puno veca nije rukomet , ni igrala dok smo mi harali . Rusi isto ogromni mi smo ih lupali .

That was the weakest Argentina to ever reach a final doing a handball against USSR and the referee not seeing it then the match against Brazil where Brazil 3 or 4 times hit the post Brazil clearly deserved to win that match and then 2 times a penalty shootout, what Germany did to y‘all is justice served at its finest…

Yugoslavia had a great footballing side and two club sides in Red Star and Dinamo Zagreb its a shame what happened when the country split i think this Yugoslavia team could of gone on to greater success Pancev was an oustanding player
Pančev was a piece of crap. He couldn't even make first 11 in Fortuna Düsseldrof in the season they were relegated.

Grande goleiro nessa era da seleção Argentina. Um dos melhores de todos os tempos. Grande ídolo Argentino. Pena que não é da minha época, mas sempre ouvi falar no pegador de pênaltis, Goycothea.
Ele foi para essa Copa como reserva, mas o goleiro titular quebrou uma perna em uma entrada de seu próprio zagueiro ainda na primeira fase.
Uma cena que já procurei, mas não encontrei, foi de Maradona beijando as mãos de Goycochea em agradecimento por tê-lo salvado de entrar para a história como o vilão da derrota nessa disputa com a Iugoslávia.
RIP Maradona sir.

Yugoslavia goalkeeper, Ivkovic (at the time at Sporting Clube de Portugal), bet with Maradona 100$ he would save the penalty when in 1989 Uefa Cup game he played against Napoli. Maradona missed the penalty Ivkovic won the 100$. Then, in this Argentina x Yugoslavia, even though Argentina won the shootout, Ivkovic, again, saved Maradona's penalty. :)))))

Tomislav Ivković saved a penalty by Maradona in the penalty shoot-out in the match Napoli - Sporting in 1989.
So, Ivković had saved two penalties from Maradona.

Yugoslavia deserved to win
The history of football is full of teams which "deserved to win". Hungary deserved to win in 1954, The Netherlands deserved to win in 1974 and many say the Czech Republic really deserved the 2004 UEFA Euro Cup and not Greece. I've even met Greeks who said they were "lucky" to win in 2004. Yugoslavia did well in 1990 and probably deserved to have gone to the semi-finals at the very least.
To be fair the entire 1990 World Cup was rather unspectacular and dull. Even the German winning team won rather unglamorously against Argentina and most shrugged the shoulders and moved on. 1990 has been voted by many as one of the worst football world cups - and it did have the fewest goals in total.
@@paulallen8109 West Germany v Italy would have been the right final. They were the two best teams. I meant Yugoslavia deserved to win this game given the circumstances. Argentina were extremely lucky to get to the final.

Only the last match which was arranged by Italian Mafia to make Germany the champions since they couldn't score a single goal the whole game so at the end Germany invented a penalty kick and ran off with the cup. FF to Germany 2006, they returned the favour > Italy won the cup
