Rufus is not worthless, he is a fan favorite. He absolutely has channel value. Keep Rufus!
Rufus can be the mascot! Another male to do the deeds. Hes worth the effort to keep and love!
Their is another word for that, and its not "Mascot".
Rufus should be allowed to live his best life as a pet alpaca.
Alpacas come from a cold climate! I live in Southern California and my friends have alpacas and summers where we have extended heat spells their alpaca studs get heat stress infertility. I would give Rufus a couple of months before you trade him in and retest him. Heat stress infertility takes a couple of months to resolve itself.
That's my question as well. We have a lot of bulls up in Idaho and they never go sterile from the cold. Neither do my Rams🤷
Heat stress sounds more reasonable to me than saying the winter's severe cold affected him. An animal that originated in the Peruvian Andes should have no problem with single digit cold.
I am in Idaho as well, our livestock would all die out up here if cold caused infertility! However, heat will cause lower counts! I breed rabbits, and it's rare to get summer babies, unless I keep my bucks under air-conditioning. Most winters we are under 0 for weeks on end....seems as though winter will never end!
@@donnajoyner1474 I'm pretty sure he's never been in the Andes and know from being in East Coast Virginia that I have to adapt from summer to winters and vis-versa. Not sexually but just body changes with the seasons. The winter they had was extreme for there so it's possible. Mike
I would agree...he's breed before...I to raise rabbits and my males go sterile every summer...

I hope you can borrow/rent a male intact alpaca and still be able to keep Rufus! I like Rufus and his funny stalking personality.

As you was trying to get Rufus into the trailer, he had that look in his eyes as if he was thinking, " Last animal that went in there didnt come home, Aint no way im going in there".
Rufus has gone from a working model to a sports job. Brooks has gotten so big and just gets sweeter and sweeter each day. Rufus needs to stay and be the neighborhood grumpy
Poor Rufus, he was so afraid of what was going to happen to him. I hope ya'll keep him as a pet or at least rehome him to a sanctuary where he can live a long happy life, he's a good boy and deserves it. Blessings...

As a breeder ourselves I'd castrate Rufus and find another male to add to the farm. As long as Rufus is fixed you can have another intact male on the farm. 🙏 You can find connections soon even if it's just on a lease.

Daniel it might be the beard. My daughter was scared of men, especially if they had a beard. So glad you're going to keep Rufus, we know how much he loves you Daniel.

Rufus is a great guard Alpaca. I hope you can keep him and just borrow one for breeding. How about artificial breeding. Anyway, I hope you get a little boy you can keep out of their next batch of babies.
Artificial breeding w camellids does not work because they are induced ovulators and need the whole mating process.

@@romeliaanddixie I don't see Rufus as an aggressive Alpaca in fact as you can see by his demeanor he's pretty nervous and skiddish. I understand they do that for dogs and certain other animals.
it is very costly to castrate an older animal, it not like you canjust band him, cut him, onve there over a year old they will bleed out, they have to be put out and a full on operation.. not worth it, nor it it worth keeping, feeding, it his time to move a long, it not like they are runninga kids petting zoo. time to go

Poor Rufus, all he wants to do, is be in the pasture with his farm animal friends. Getting a semen sample from animals is not fun...for them. It can be a little painful. I do give Rufus, an "A" for effort in the mating dept.

@@nm7sp if they are going to be alpaca breeders this is highly unresponsible to have a male that isn't really producing who has showen signs of agression not to casterate him and then bring in another male no..thats just asking for both of them to attack eachother or worse the females get attacked in the cross hairs as well, its better they fix him and let roofus live out his days as a pet.
Would it be possible to give him a testosterone shot to produce more sperm. And when I find u a sperm donor .. maybe keep him separated so u have no problems he is awesome . Don't castrate him he may surprise u some day .. LOL 🤣🤣🤣

i could never ever get Rufus out of my life...there is something with animals that are injured,fearful,helpless of they miss something like him...i always give them more love coz i want to make their life easier...with babies or nor Rufus deserves to stay,he makes us smile.:)..it was hard for me to listen him cry:(...hope he is with you still...cheers!

What an interesting morning day.....Steve's got something to say about everything. The chickens coming out to see what's going on. Rufus not wanting to be harnessed and put in trailer and having to have his hind end carried to the procedure area. Earl caught in the middle of it all. Brooks not sure she wants to be on this adventure and DJ grimacing while watching Rufus's procedure. So much fun watching the side-eye and hesitation while you and DJ are sharing Rufus's breeding situation. Spend some time thinking about a decision. Rufus is quite the entertainer.

Wow I’ve never heard of that cold effecting breeding. I was born and raised on a farm in Southern Illinois where it’s definitely cold for months but we never had issues with breeding. Learn something new every day. Happy Easter to y’all!!!

I love Rufus. Please keep him he makes me smile I just love Rufus he's hilarious. I think you need to lease a male for a bit but then probably what would happen if you would fall in love with it and then you'd want to keep it that's the whole thing that would be my problem. I know of a Alpaca Farm that raises them here in Missouri. I live in Kansas City Missouri and I believe it is between Kansas City and St Louis. I will find out the name and all and send it to you!
