Dan, did you know there's a lifeblood cocoon hidden above the Mantis Lords arena? It's true! You have to wall jump up the door they slam shut, and it helps a lot in Steel Soul runs.
So whenever I watch, I often will be doing something else in another window - your voice is super soothing no matter what, even if you're panicking or dying. It's just fun to hear you have fun. HOWEVER Hollow Knight always gets my undivided attention, to the point where I can't do anything else but watch, haha. Even better is that it is very co-op friendly. My friend and I had a great time going through the whole game co-op. Unlike in Souls games, you don't have to go through hoops to summon friends, and you don't have to worry about invaders either.
40:45 I'd actually recommend that you do prioritize Fragile Strength; even using it over something like Longnail. The attack boost is pretty large; around the same as having the next Nail upgrade already, if not higher. Killing things faster means you have to dodge and survive for less time! Combined with Fragile Health you'll almost be overpowered for like half the game. Same thing applies to the shaman charms if you prefer to attack with magic, too.
Unbeknownst to everyone watching, Dan was also doing a No Magic run! I'm only half kidding. But you would make such short work of so many enemies if you just bug-kamehameha them; the soul you use up you use to heal yourself after getting bodied anyway. No sense saving soul. :) Good luck with the rest of the run!
I can't count how many times I have failed in a Steel Soul run, I never even got the monarch wings. You could have easily got he thorns of agony for free in Greenpath and then gone to Salubra and had enough charms for the first charm notch (remember that for when your run ends?). I like the way you look at the map of Fungal Wastes when you know that you don't have it yet 7 times!

I know I am a little late to this, but certain boss health will scale with nail upgrades. So most people advocate for getting spells over nail upgrades since spells have much larger damage output
I'll keep saying this and eventually people will notice, there are no adult grubs. All grubs are by definition babies, and when they become adults they turn into moths. Which is why they were considered so dangerous.
You actually don't need to fight the Soul Master if you don't want to, you just won't be able to re-use the front entrance of City of Tears and you'll need the Lantern to get into Crystal Peak. also, on the topic of things you get from the Sage (perhaps a bit indirectly in this case), you might want to consider trying out Dream Shield in this run, as it provides a nice bit of added defense as well as a little mid-range offense. It's particularly handy in Crystal Peak, as it can damage the enemies that are normally only vulnerable to spells, most importantly the ones that shoot lasers everywhere.
I'm impressed you've made it this far on your first Steel Soul run! But I can't be the only one who started sweating when you said you plan to attempt one of the Colosseum trials. Uh oh.
Don't forget, this is a man with the muscle memory of someone who completed the 4th Pantheon. All of Dan's high stakes combat experience has prepared him well for most kinds of combat before the endgame stuff

I lost two runs before getting Steel Soul and Heart. Both were to the Crystallized Mound, with the dumb Crystal Hunters before Descending Dark. The bosses are scary, but most people I’ve asked say they lose to the nasty traps and enemies that you don’t expect to be hard.
Fragile Strength is the second most powerful charm in the game after Shaman Stone. You should get it ASAP. Heart is neat, but really won't make much difference.

Unfortunately, no. The colosseum counts as 3 real fights. There's even a special room next to the bench for your shade to spawn (in non steel soul runs of course). The only fights that don't count as real fights are ones that require the dream nail to access.

Fragile Heart or Fragile Strength? Mathematically, the answer is fragile strength. Being able to kill enemies 50% faster means you take 50% less damage given a large enough data pool. So, the question is, is Fragile Heart worth 50% extra health, and that’s an easy answer: no. Even at the start of the game, with only 5 masks, the 2 additional masks isn’t equal to 50%. Having said all that, Fragile Heart does only take 2 notches, while Strength takes 3, so taking that into account, Heart is actually marginally better at 5 masks, equal at 6 and worse at any higher amount.
Important to note this is the truth when facing bosses, when exploring it might be better to have the health, the enemies are generally non threatening but give you soul to sustain you through platforming challenges

The second collosseum run is fine if you do it late game - it's the THIRD one that's insanely difficult

Unfortunately, no. The colosseum counts as 3 real fights. There's even a special room next to the bench for your shade to spawn (in non steel soul runs of course). The only fights that don't count as real fights are ones that require the dream nail to access.
