Hi, just checking out your plans when I came across your "Wooden Step Stool" plan. If you could take another look at it because it seems to not be a stable platform. The base needs to have a wider stance then the top otherwise whomever steps on the edge will fall and that is not a food thing.
I like the "functional" look with the hinges, is there any way to stop them from actually swinging ? I'd hate for a really windy day for them to be slamming on my window frames.
You can use decorative shutter dogs that attach to the house and turn to hold the shutter back. Or, like this client, you can attach an eye hook to the house and back of the shutters and then pull them tight with some thin gauge wire.
Tommy, how do i mount them to my vinyl siding without screwing them into the studs behind it? I know that i could use vinyl siding clips but how would i attach them to the back of the shutters? Or if you have another idea... Thank you for your time.
I don't think it would look great to attach these hinges to vinyl siding. You could build a wood casing around the outside of your window and then attach the hinges to that, but that would require trimming the siding down and capping it to fit up to the casing. Another option would be to mount a wood base plate of sorts to the siding and then attach the hinges to that....but I'm not sure what that would look like. Hope that helps!
I do have a question. I bought cedar for my shutters. My windows are 24 and a forth inch wide. My cedar is 4 inch wide cedar. I didn't take into consideration that they are half a inch shorter. I don't want to ripe these boards, it won't look right. What is your suggestion? These will be working shutters. Help please.
Doing some quick math, each shutter needs to cover ~12 1/8" and you've got 10.5 inches between your 3 boards, 1/8" between each board to allow for wood movement adds another 3/8" and takes it to 10 7/8". You'll want at least 1/8" between the shutters when they're closed, so each will have 1/16". Then at least an 1/8" between the window opening the shutter, so that's another 3/16"" taking total width to ~11 1/16". Now you'll have to play around with the measurements to find that extra inch or so. If you don't like the look of 4 boards ripped by about 5/8" down to 2 7/8", then maybe increase the gaps between the window and each shutter and the gap between the shutters to around 1/2". This is all assuming everything winds up being those exact measurements, but it gives you some idea. Reference measuring with the shutters and windows instead of taking only tape measurements will help you be more accurate. Hope that helps!
the shutters are so small though.. Its kinda like hanging a 1 foot door in a frame and being like "Well it looks pretty!" there's also nothing to stop them from flapping in the wind. LOL
If the shutters wouldn't cover the entire window, why not install them to the edge of the brick openning of the window. I installed mine that way and it looks much better than what you did. I also installed hanging clips at the top of each shutter. Unhook to remove to store away. I made my shutters out of fir. They are over thiry years old and still look very good.
I thought the thumbnail was how NOT to build shutters, but skipping to the reveal proved me wrong. I am sorry but in my opinion, they look plain silly; they're half the width they should have been.
You didn't watch the video...they aren't there to protect the windows. What's so hard to understand about decor that isn't necessarily functional? It's no different than growing and keeping grass in your yard, landscaping around your house, painting the drywall inside your house, hanging stuff on the walls.....none of it is functional, it just looks nice.
Another fool cutting more than one board at a time. EVEN when clamped, this method is a safety violation and can cause you or anyone near you to be injured or killed. If you try this because you saw it on You Tube, and get injured, is the presenter here liable for your inury? If he is making money from this site, he is no longer an amatuer sharing his tips and knowlege, he becomes a professional advising you on how to act and that can be a legal problem when an injury occurs. What if the judge disagrees and says he's not to blame? Well, he still has the court costs, legal fees, time lost, worry, and bad reputation. Not worth it in the end.
