Someone did steal a can of peaches from the canteen tho. Holy mother, has it already been almost ten years, feels like I have just watched it yesterday
Tragic man. US Military went from almost nothing to 8.5 million people. Many people simply were not competent to do the job they were assigned. That was inevitable, creating such a huge army so quickly. Sobel was one such case. He understood physical fitness, he tried to provide leader ship but he didn’t know how to do it, and he did it badly. On top of that, he was incompetent at the tactical skills of small unit leader ship, which thankfully was found out before he was sent into battle where he would’ve gotten himself and a lot of other people killed. One of the many cruel things about any war is it drags people’s’ real character out into the bright light of day, where they can’t hide. It showed Sobel for what he was. How many of us could stand that exposure? We all like to think that we would be Dick Winters, but most of us will never know.
I know I wouldn't be Dick Winters...but I'm pretty sure I'm not Captain Sobel, either. My grandfathers were WW2 vets, and they weren't as great as Winters or as bad as Sobel, either. I'd be happy if I could have just matched half of what they did in combat in the Pacific.
Sobel is underappreciated. They should have depicted him a little better. They painted him as a villain without getting the same mercy and understanding that others got. He was a leader-in-training. Despite his shortfalls he demanded excellence, beating discipline, fitness, and health into a unit that went on to be one of the most significant in the war. That's not nothing. Many of the members of Easy Company went on to give him credit despite not liking the guy. Removing him was a good call as he would have gotten people killed, and that's okay. We all dont need to be tactical geniuses. He was good at training and logistics, and that's where he was placed.
Leonidas, Hannibal, Alexander, Caesar, Agrippa, Atilla, Charlemagne, William the Conquerer, Saladin, Genghis Khan, George Washington, Napoleon, George S. Patton… Captain Herbert Sobel. Say his name with the respect and dignity it deserves. Along with the hallowed names of the greatest tacticians and conquerers of all eternity.
From what I've read the real Herbert Sobel was a well-intentioned man who was a good trainer. Despite not being much of an athlete he always ran Currahee with his company. The real Dick Winters stated that Sobel's tough training had a lot to do with turning Easy into what it became, and Don Malarkey later wrote that he felt Sobel's training was a big part of why he survived.
Although it is true that several Taccoa men thought highly of his training, to say that the 506th thought well of the man's character is a stretch. Many of those same men also called him "petty and vindictive"
@@CodaMission I think it's clear that he was all of those things. Petty, vindictive, and a poor tactician, but also a dedicated trainer who wanted his men to be the best. He knew that war was going to throw tougher situations at his men than he could ever cook up, so he wanted them to be as mentally tough as possible...and he wanted to catch the washouts early and get them out of his company. Also, I didn't say the entire 506th thought well of Sobel...I cited specific examples of men who had at least somewhat kind words for him.
It’s easy to miss because Sobel proved to be such an ineffective combat leader that he was a brilliant instructor. Easy company would have probably been wiped out if it wasn’t for his training. Like Col. Sink says in the show, he fielded the finest company of soldiers Sink had ever seen. He just wasn’t the right man to lead them into battle.

Winters grew disgusted with Sobel’s increasingly harsh treatment of the men. Walking the ranks during inspection, Sobel would bark out, “dirty stacking swivel,” “dirty gun sight” or “dirty ears,” and dock the men leave time. It didn’t matter to Sobel, but it did to Winters, who was often ordered to come up with a list of infractions, real or imagined.Sobel’s habit of canceling leaves as punishment was not a hardship for the socially reserved Winters. Andrew Phillips Same situation here! I saw this scene waiting for a joke or a laughing sound on the background! HAHAHAHA I definitely can't take him seriously anymore...
***** It has nothing to do with denying the reality of the series and doesn't show lack of knowledge of WW2. If someone has watched Friends enough Schwimmer's character Ross has a very whiny and melodramatic personality. Associating an actor with his most popular role is a pretty common thing. So, he just doesn't strike people as an authority figure. Doesn't make someone an idiot.
Andrew Phillips I've watched Friends many times myself and I could actually get into David's role as Captain Sobel. I was able to separate him from Ross, and he actually made me dislike him. From what I hear he really got into character for the role too. Fair play to him.
I always thought David was just some corny bad actor. After I watched his performance in band of brothers I completely changed my mind about that. He was absolutely phenomenal in that show, great actor!!
"Corporal Toye. There will be no leaning in my company. Are those dusty Jump Wings? How do you expect to slay the Huns with dust on your jump wings?" I thought that was a hilarious impression.
Reminds me of the Corporal Himmelstoss character from All Quiet on the Western Front. No one likes him, no one would follow him, a bad soldier who can't cope with actual combat and one who gives out vindictive, arbitrary punishment. But Paul (the narrator) acknowledges that his treatment did make them more survivable in combat. Distrusting, coarse, no longer innocent and instilling a reliance on comradeship with their fellow soldiers. Then he compares himself to young recruits later in the war who didn't have time to be as thoroughly beaten into shape before being sent to the front and sees them as afraid and much less likely to intuit how to survive artillery or machine guns.
Couldn't agree less with those who cannot split Ross from Sobel. Besides, as becomes clear when we know the character better, a big part of his cruelty comes from his intimate insecurities, which is quite Rossish. Personally, I have met some CO / trainers of this kind, tough, unable to empathise (thinking that their duty) and way more "smart" than their men's cunning for cheating, and the way this one is built up is impeccable. I enjoyed every scene DS appeared within.
guys come on, we all love him as Ross, but let's try to see and appreciate him for being somebody else, it's not that great being constantly complemented on one thing when you've done hundreds of others...
I once met a guy who had it worse: he looked exactly like David Schwimmer. I was in a packed elevator and this guy walks in, everyone looks at him and straight away he says "I know, I look like David Schwimmer", as if this happens to him 5 times a day, he looked so tired of it, and he even sounded like Schwimmer/Ross when he said it. Schwimmer may be typecast as a Ross type, but this poor schmo was typecast as Schwimmer for life!
I love the way he stalks up & down the line, eyes scanning for the next victim, & you can see each of the servicemembers trying not to catch his eye. A Masterful performance
When I see him, I think of him in this role more than I do "Friends". Maybe because I spent 22 years in the Army and experienced Ahole commanders and 1SGs just like this. I remember a new 1SG yelling at the company about a dead fish in the parking lot... but that's another story...
I hated when we got a new 1SG. They always loved to flex the first week. Never could get the barracks clean enough to pass his level of inspection. Every time.
@@MaxwellAerialPhotography It was the new 1SGs 1st formation/day running the company, so we formed up in the parking lot in front of the hanger we worked at and he began ranting about how the company in his estimation, was low standard. He was going to fix it. He then asked who had seen the fish laying in the parking lot? (me: What?) He ranted about if we upheld ourselves to real military standards then someone would have picked up the fish from the parking lot and thrown it away. After formation I walked over to look at this fish. It was half a fish that was flattened and had been there for at least a week. I was months from retirement at that point. Guy was a piece of work...
I never watched Friends - so I never knew him as Ross only Sobel. It speaks of an actor make me hate a guy in less than 3 minutes. It took Joffrey an entire season, this guy took minutes. But I do not demean the real life Sobel. He knew training, he knew how to break men. He knew to make soldiers. He only lacked leadership - all he had to do was ask Winters for guidance on that - however if the lower ranks saw that - it would make him look weak, even if Winters told nobody, cause the seed of incompetence was planted. I like to think the high brass knew of Sobel’s issues and the slight mutiny not only proved them right but showed the men were not stupid. Whoever in the high brass argued to spare them possibly knew these men would be in good hands - no matter the officer who was assigned. They just knew Sobel would probably meet an “accidental” case of misfire from behind - Normandy would all but ensure that.
I respect Herbert Sobel, despite his real life shortcomings as the guy who made Easy Company the hardest company in the 101st, but I strongly agree with ya there, it's like Ross turning into Monica!
@@briang.7206 - perhaps part of your motivation to work hard for people you liked and respected was contrast with those you didn't. Unintentional good cop bad cop.

1. Rusty blade doesn't cut as fast 2. Forcing to have all weapons in best condition despite reasoning is part of military discipline 3. Captain is just being a hard ass
Sobel didn't get a funeral. The man who united an entire company against him to give them something to fight against. Breaks my heart. We all dislike Sobel in BOB, but there's no doubt in my mind (or probably most minds), that this man trained one of the best companies specifically because of that fact. Spawned some of the best officers and NCOs. When you watch this and you seethe at this man, know that he got some of the best results from his men. Even driving most of his noncoms to face the fence. I don't know if it was ever really on the table, but they didn't know that. Sobel is a hero. For his feats on the field, but especially for what he did off the field. Hell of a guy. RIP Herb.
His style of training was indeed one of the key factors that made Easy Company as effective as they were. But his court martialing of Winters is what made people lose all respect for him. It was wrong, and had nothing to do with making Easy Company stronger. It removed the idea that he was merely being a hard ass for the sake of results.
His sons didn't even go to his funeral, or his ex-wife, or anybody from E company. He even tried to kill himself but failed. He lived a life of misery after WWII.
Regardless of what one may think of Herbert Sobel, he probably was an outstanding trainer and should rightfully get credit for instilling discipline in these men. When Winters eventually took over he had a great unit to work with. Schwimmer is also a great/versatile actor. He can take on serious roles and comedic roles.
I think he did a fantastic job with Sobel. It must be awesome to be Ross on Friends, until you realize that you are always going to be Ross on Friends. They gave him a chance and he nailed it.
Actually this level of discipline is an effective training tool. It will build a strong team if properly applied. It is also necessary to reward success by the team.
god its the little details, leipgot could have just ran off to change like every other soldier, but no he goes to collect his knife. the best series ever made..
Schwimmer is actually very good at this role. I'd like to see him play more stuff like this.

The best way to get through being under Captain Sobel's command, is to simply assume there is no such thing as a weekend pass.
We were on a break !!!
*break
totally true.....Unagi with that action replay thing he would do :P
I love the way he stalks up & down the line, eyes scanning for the next victim, & you can see each of the servicemembers trying not to catch his eye. A Masterful performance
Shows the range of Mr. Schwimmer. When I first watched this, I couldn't believe that I was watching the same guy who was Ross Gellar!
Every post that knocks Sobel here is actually a high compliment for the performance of David Schwimmer.
Every time.
Please do tell the fish story.
We had a captain of our ship who was a real jerk. He'd walk up and take the chewing gum out of his mouth and drop it in your coffee cup.
"What is the God damn holdup Captain Sobel"
"Someone threw my sandwich away sir! My sandwich! MYYYY SANDWICCHHHHHHH!!!!"
Ross: PIVOT! PIVOT! PIVOT! PIVOT! PIVOT! PIVOT!
Chandler: Shut, up! Shut up! SHUT UP!
Sobel was a great condition trainer but that's it.. no combat for that guy.
But he did tho
He wouldn't have had the chance anyways. The plane he would have gone on burst into flames.
The One Where Ross Revokes Weekend Passes
He's so damn good in this role
Schwimmer played Ross here but in different era and circumstances.
If you've seen Friends, it's hard to watch this without laughing.
Somehow I can't hate this guy like others do. I think it is because of the actor. Seems too harmless. I think because he played in Friends.
Took you a whole season to hate Joffrey?! That little weasel was despicable from the get-go.
I respect Herbert Sobel, despite his real life shortcomings as the guy who made Easy Company the hardest company in the 101st, but I strongly agree with ya there, it's like Ross turning into Monica!
Ross was phenomenal in this lol
Sobel types are a good element to have in the military. The b.s. they put on folks builds resilience.
As a vet I found myself wanting to work hard and do my best for people I liked and respected.
@@briang.7206 - perhaps part of your motivation to work hard for people you liked and respected was contrast with those you didn't. Unintentional good cop bad cop.
@@granthornin3836 ok the training has to be hard but had he shown his men some respect they would have performed better.
@@briang.7206 - that is often the case, is more pleasant and more sustainable. My point is that douchebags have their place. Little brings more unity than common suffering of injustice. Should not be everywhere but has its place.
David Schwimmer is a terrific actor.
He's just mad because somebody ate his sandwich. It had a moist maker.
For some reason, I remember Sobel getting very angry about a Sandwhich..
"my sandwhich... MMYYYY SANNDWHICHH??!??"
hhhhhhhhh, I can't take David seriously
me too
Same
Currahee is 9 miles east of my house. I wouldn't want to run up the mountain. Great museum in Toccoa GA.
Despite watching this many times over, hearing David Schwimmer swear is one of the weirdest things in television.
So glad I was able to watch Band of Brothers before FRIENDS😆 When I rewath this, all I can see is Ross trying to be tough🤣🤣
MY SANDWICH
Isn't a rusty bonnet better ? If the sharp doesn't get it, the infection will ?
Episode 9 will make you cry😖😢
im dying to watch this series again. its been so so long... i was still in middle school when this first made out
Imagine Cpt Sobel met had authority over Rachel's dad if he was a private in this movie lol
It's not a movie, it's a mini-series
This is how Ross imagines people see him as when he turns into “Red Ross”.
1. Rusty blade doesn't cut as fast
2. Forcing to have all weapons in best condition despite reasoning is part of military discipline
3. Captain is just being a hard ass
The one where Ross training troops
LMFAO
This scene hits so close to home
Never seen friends so can totally appreciate the acting here.
TH-cam algo, what have you done. Now I have to watch the whole thing again...
Ross:
Oh the band's ready. Well, we we gotta do what the band says. I DON'T CARE ABOUT THE STUPID BAND!
He made that unit, and they give him his dues in this show.
Sobel...grrr! But band of brothers was the very best of the best. Never tired of seeing the documentary. Dick winter's was my hero.
All soldiers he inspected here survived the war
His sons didn't even go to his funeral, or his ex-wife, or anybody from E company. He even tried to kill himself but failed. He lived a life of misery after WWII.
Regardless of what one may think of Herbert Sobel, he probably was an outstanding trainer and should rightfully get credit for instilling discipline in these men.
When Winters eventually took over he had a great unit to work with.
Schwimmer is also a great/versatile actor. He can take on serious roles and comedic roles.
COMPANY: The Divorce Force
Commanded by: The Rossatron
I think he did a fantastic job with Sobel. It must be awesome to be Ross on Friends, until you realize that you are always going to be Ross on Friends. They gave him a chance and he nailed it.
We were on a brrreeeaaaakkkk!!!
Loved this series.
Actually this level of discipline is an effective training tool. It will build a strong team if properly applied.
It is also necessary to reward success by the team.
god its the little details, leipgot could have just ran off to change like every other soldier, but no he goes to collect his knife. the best series ever made..
