    Hi D,
    What a masterpiece of art.
Allow me give you some thoughts from someone who's born here.
First of all, first time I watched the video I was shocked and deeply moved. The song/ video takes a very deep look into our german souls and how a lot of us feel about our country.
It's a love- hate- relationship. The video is loaded with tons of symbols, that as a German you catch onto.
Let's start: in the intro you see Germania ( Personification of Germany) during roman/ germanian tribes time.
The red Lazer represents the "red thread" of the story/ history.
Astronauts from the future bringing Germania in a glass coffin (snow-white) so she can lead through the/her german history.
Next you observe the twenties(Weimar Republic). The prison scene representing the rough, violent times especially for the majority of the population struggling to survive. Money raining down/ the great depression. And Germany's first try as a democratic state. In between Germania is dressed in knight's armor awaking her knights/band with the Lazarus spear.
Next Germania is pushed in a wheelchair by the band through the Berlin Holocaust Memorial with burning bodies. (Imagine the statue of liberty being shown like that)
Next vignette the office scene showing east Germany and west Germany reunited (1990).
Then you're being taken back to mideveal times, monks/ church are feasting off of Germania. In most scenes you'll see some church man involved. No coincidence.
The concentration camp scene in the background you see V2 rockets ignition. The inmates are wearing different types of stars on their chests and a sign on the gallows reads: no photos. Germania wears an eye-patch first on her left, than on her right eye.
Than a quick shot of Germania dressed modern with lots of gold leading german shepherds., representing Germany's wealth.
The 70's scene shows the RAF- extremists holding Germania/ Germany hostage.
Next vignette is the witch burnings shifting to the book burning. If you have a close look, at minute 4:45 you see a church man holding up a cross hugging a Nazi, symbolising the churches over all position to the horrific events happening during 1933-1945.
The birth scene. Germania is giving birth to dogs respectively "Leonberger" a breed preferred by Kings and Queens. The Breed almost went extinct during WW1 and WW2. A cardinal/ Constitutional judge (dressed in red) dressed in red helping a new Germany being born.
At minute 5:50 you see the riots against refugees homes in the 90's in Hoyerswerda. Molotovs are being thrown and a car is being pushed over with the help of a man dressed in Nazi uniform.
Than the scenes/ time vignettes start shifting faster and faster, showing how many times, when circumstances becoming too extreme everything is falling apart and Germania ( dressed in knight's) armor is crying.
The outro is the piano version of the song "Sonne" which completes how we feel thinking of our past: a sense of sadness.
To sum it up. Germany has a long, wild, violent, unique history, because we as a state of today exist only since 1990. Yet the roots go back a very long time. "Young and yet so old" I hope that helped a little to understand the video and with that us Germans. We don't have a strong feeling of patriotism, but a strong sense of unity.
With love from country of Poets and thinkers.

    Hiho Guys,
German is my first language - so as a native pls let me explain as concise as possible many of the hidden symbols and meanings in this great song: In advance - please apologize the mistakes that I have certainly made as English is not my first language :-)
Before I go through it just some general remarks: the black lady’s persona in the video is “Germania” and she represents Germany (the nation / the people) and in many scenes where she appears the colors black, red and gold (colors of the German flag) are dominant. The video as well as the lyrics are a critical review on Germany’s history.
Main scenes of the video: The first scene with the roman soldiers refers to the battle of Teutoburg forest, the first time the German tribes untied under Arminius against the Romans and ambushed them on their march back to their winter camp + completely annihilated several legions - the Romans would never return and fortify at the Rhine - this could be seen as the birth of the German identity.
The red laser beams throughout the video I think are guiding thread (German expression “roter Faden”" translates to “red thread” and translates to guiding principle / guideline of a story)
When Germania (black lady) in golden armor (black red gold as main colors of the scene pushes the standard into the ground she raises all the dead medieval knights - a reference to the strength of the German people who recovered time after time throughout history from catastrophes (especially, but not only) in the middle ages (crusades, Hunnic invasion, plague, etc.) - the additional meaning i think is the fact that German people several times followed their countries call for War - even if they were already beaten up (e.g. after WWI going into WWII). The standard I guess refers to a relic which was part of the Imperial regalia of the Holy Roman Empire of German Nation ("Heiliges Römisches Reich Deutscher Nation" - the conglomerate of mostly German territories which was ruled by a emperor elected by the highest ranking nobles of the realm and persisted from the 10th century until 1806). This relic, the Lance of Longinus, is dated back to the 8th century and was said to contain in it's tip one of the nails that were used in the crucifixion of Jesus. It was supposed to make any army that carries it into battle invincible. It can still be seen today in a museum called "die Schatzkammer" (the treasure chamber) in Vienna,/Austria.
Next scene (fistfight) is from the roaring twenties, the period between the two world wars where upper class society was decadent on the backs of ordinary people + entertainment industry was born.
Next scene shows the Hindenburg disaster (famous German Airship which blew up in flames) during a time of growing industrialization 1930s.
Next Scene is from the communist elite in eastern Germany who was indulging in party and Champaign while ordinary people were poor and the main idea of communism should be equality of the people.
Then the scene in the middle ages - where the monks (representing the church) feast on Germania (the land) and suppress the common folk (underneath the table).
The scene in the prison again refers to the roaring twenties, as Germania is dressed in a Prussian uniform suppressing the German people. Additionally money is thrown away by everybody, a reference to the big inflation in Germany after WWI.
Then the rockets (Nazi German was working on the first warfare rockets called V1 and V2 (V standing for “Vergeltung” which translates to retaliation - fitting to the picture with the rockets, the lyrics are an alliteration on “über” a german pre-syllable/prefix meaning over. “Überheblich (overbearing / presumptuous), Überlegen (superior) Übernehmen (taking over), Übergeben (handing over), überraschen (surprise), Überfallen (ambush), „Deutschland, Deutschland über allen“ (Germany, Germany above everyONE). The line „Deutschland, Deutschland über alleN“ (Germany above everyONE) is a reference to one of the verses of former national anthem of Germany which was in use from 1922 to 1945 and got excluded after WW2 for being too nationalistic. In this verse there was a line “Deutschland, Deutschland über alleS“ (a subtle difference to the line in Rammstein’s version translating to “Germany, Germany above everyTHING”). The actual verse with this line was already written in 1842, long before the formation of Germany as a Nation (which only happened in 1871) - therefore “Germany, Germany above everything” was relating to the importance of uniting the several German ministates, kingdoms and Duchies into one nation. After WWI this verse got taken into the national anthem of Germany as it spoke to the patriotism of the German people but later officially excluded from the anthem since it was deemed too nationalistic. Today this verse/line is generally frowned upon and would be associated with Neo-Nationalism. Using this line in the scene with the concentration camps including the subtle change from “Germany above everyTHING” (which has already the nationalistic connotation) to “Germany above everyONE” which carries an even more nationalistic / racist meaning is a very clever double-reference to the doctrine of racial supremacy in the Third Reich.
The Concentration camp prisoners have symbols sewn on their jackets for the groups the Nazis hunted and killed (yellow star for Jews, Pink triangle for Homosexuals, red symbol for political adversaries (communists). Germania is on the side of the Nazis and has an eyepatch (representing the blind eye that many Germans turned on the atrocities of the Nazi regime.
The Scene where Till is dressed as a woman refers to the left wing terrorist group called “Rote Armee Fraktion” - a terrorist association in the 1970s responsible for several political assassinations and murders as well as a famous kidnapping of German Diplomats in Stockholm.
Then there is the scene with the stake at which books are burned by the Nazis and people are burned by the church (inquisition). Later the monk (church) and the Nazi soldier hug (as the church did not go against the Nazis when they came to power and both organizations were responsible for a lot of intolerance and suffering in their times.
The scene where Germania is dressed in white with a Halo I think refers to the positive, the strength of the German people who recovered time after time from several catastrophic disasters in their history. Later she gives birth to puppies representing the German people. The puppies are from a rare breed of dogs (Leonbergers) who’s population got almost extinct in both world wars (symbolized with the dogs wearing gas masks) but recovered after the wars. In these scenes the band members wear space suits - in my view a reference to the (hopefully) better future of the German people.
In the very last scene of the outro you can once more see Germania with national colors (black, red gold) with black lipstick, red eyes and golden armor before a red/ black background holding an eagle, the heraldic symbol of Germany.
One further remark to one of the more important lines of the lyrics: The line in this song "So jung und doch so alt" (So young and yet so old) refers to the fact that the German people with their idenitify have been around for thousands of years, however the actual state of Germany as a nation was only founded very late (1871) thorough the unification of several mini states (Prussia, Hessia, Saxonia, Bavaria, etc.) But it can also be understood that today's Germany has only existed since the reunification of East and West Germany (October 3, 1990): so young and yet so old.

One little nuance on that lance. The attribution of it to Longinus is later invention, closer to to Renaissance times, but its history begins in the medieval times.
When Henry the Fowler bought it from the Burgundians for the city of Basel, he was told it is the lance of Saint Maurice, who was martyred near the place of its discovery.
Saint Maurice was a legionnaire, a warrior, and half-barbarian himself, so to self-identify with him was just natural for the German kings of that time, who knew that Germany is relatively poor and barbaric, while their neighbors in France (west Frankish kingdom) and especially Italy had all that Roman heritage.
Later Henry the Fowler's son Otto carried the St.Maurice's lance to the battle of Lechfeld, were united German tribes of Saxons, Franks, Swabians and Bavarians with their Czech allies from Bohemia crushed huge Hungarian army, killing most of the invaders including their leaders, and ending half a century of devastation that Hungarians laid on most of Europe, Germany especially (Huns were kids compared to them). That led to the, basically, foundation of Germany and Holy Roman Empire. And Otto, becoming an Emperor, remembered St. Maurice. He founded a big monastery in Magdeburg and many other monasteries and churches, and the Pope declared St.Maurice Otto's personal and dynastic patron.
Given that St.Maurice was believed to be a black African from Mauretania (or from Southern Egypt), it is doubly appropriate that it is a black woman who depicts Germania wielding his lance to resurrect and unite Germans.

On January 1, 1871, the German Empire was founded in the small German version, which had already been envisaged by the National Assembly in 1848/49 as a model for unification. Like the previous constitutions of the North German Confederation, the constitution of the German Empire provided for the King of Prussia as head of state. Wilhelm I accepted the title of German Emperor, which he disliked, at a ceremonial proclamation in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles on January 18, the coronation day of the Prussian kings. This is why this day, and not January 1st, was later celebrated as the day on which the German Empire was founded.
Germany was founded by several confederations of states.
Prussia only made up a large part of it.
The German Empire came to an end with the November Revolution and the proclamation of the Republic on November 9, 1918.
The German Reich was transformed from a monarchy into a parliamentary-democratic republic with a liberal constitution.
With the proclamation of the republic in Germany, Prussia became a free state, which was a stabilizing factor in democracy for almost the entire period of the Weimar Republic.
The very fact of Prussia's dominance over the other member states was also reflected in the fact that it had 17 out of 58 seats in the central constitutional body, the Bundesrat. As only 14 votes were required for a veto there, the Prussian government was able to prevent any law it did not like through its representatives.
However, the adoption of a new Prussian constitution, which declared the country a free state within the Reich federation, was delayed until November 30, 1920.
The term Golden Twenties or Golden Twenties refers to the period in Germany between 1924 and 1929.
During this period, Prussia was already a federal state of the "Republic of Germany".
So I would continue to say: Yes, this is "Germania" as the German people in Prussian uniform who enjoy the weaker ones because Prussia made up a large part of the land mass & population at that time. Prussia no longer had a king at this time. One part of the population exploits the other.
Because the larger part was Prussian does not mean that they were not German at that time.

Actually, after the defeat of 9 A.D. (the Varus' one, to wich you referred), the general later called precisely Germanicus (sent to Germania by Emperor Tiberius) took revenge against german tribes led by Arminius (exctaly in 16 A.D, the year indicated in Rammstein's video) in the battle of Idistavisus.
Despite the victory, Germania was not "rich" enough to risk the loss of many soldiers (as it had happened in 9 A.D.), so Romans decided to abandon it and maintain the border at the Rhine, instead of Elbe.
It was more a political and strategic choice than an obligation.
Plus, Arminius' ambush in Teutoburgus clarified to Romans that Germans were very strong enemies, whose domination would never have been achieved in a "simple" way.
Romans didn't get scared so easily; they always considered pros and cons when it came to conquer and dominate lands and peoples.
Fact is, anyways, that german peoples' invasions, centuries later, will be the main reason of the fall of the Western Roman Empire (476 A.D.).
      Greetings from Italy

We owe everything to the Romans. They came in, killed or enslaved the weak. They Brought roads, water supply control, Organized commerce, Advanced military, Waste management, a new system of governance. They came with a multi god belief system to Europe. Eventually they switched over to a single god belief, and in general united Europe to push them out. When they were getting pushed out, the Earth went dark in 535-536 A.D. This created a very united superstition of peoples. By Mid-800’s Muslims tried to push into Europe till the Crusades started. If the Romans Did not unite people, there is no telling how far the Muslims would have pushed in. We Owe Everything to the Roman Empire. We Owe Everything to the spreading of good Ideas, and new methods. We Owe Everything to these previous Empires. They have Brought us all up to a modern way of thinking. The Story of Germany is similar. They learned so much from the Romans, and eventually tried their time as an empire like several other countries. (Brits, Dutch, French, Portugal, Spain) No Shame. Its how our civility evolved. Crazy that in happened such a short time frame. The Romans united Europe. What they did to people back then is far worse than anything we could possibly know. Slavery, torture, death.

The song is about the ambivalent relationship of Rammstein and many Germans to their country, because of the violent and cruel history with extensive human crimes ("red line of violence through german history"), especially in recent history. Therefore the video features various events from German history, including Roman times, the Middle Ages, witch hunting and burning, Protestant Reformation, the November Revolution, the "Golden Twenties" and hyperinflation, Nazi book burnings, the Hindenburg disaster, the First and Second World Wars, the Holocaust, the Weimar Republic, the Red Army Fraction (violent anti-capitalist terror alliance of young people and students against Nazis in high state and economy positions in post-war Germany), and the division of the country into West and East Germany including the Uprising June 17 in East Germany. The black woman represents Germany and one of the Colors of the German flags, sometimes as a victim, but mostly as a perpetrator. With her black skin she is also a provocation to all stupid racists
A lot of people do not understand the scenes with the dogs. This breed of dogs are not German Shepards, but Leonberger. This breed of dog narrowly escaped extinction during the First and also Second World Wars and is symbolic of the German people, whose existence was also strongly threatened in those wars (Morgenthau-Plan) - both now have a second existential chance, just like the new German democratic constitution, which in future must be protected as strongly as if it were under quarantine (Judges in red robes, Rammstein members in protective suits with the dogs)
The Holocaust was for this reason the greatest human crime because it was the first industrially organized mass murder in human history, by a country that was culturally at its highest point at this time and called itself the country of poets and thinkers. But it is precisely the high cultural and scientific level of Germany that unfortunately caused others to be viewed as subhuman who can be killed without pity, just like animals. Seeing other people as inferior has always brought a lot of suffering to people

Not all concentration camp prisoners were Jews. The pink stars denounced homosexuals regardless of their religion, the red triangles indicated that they were political opponents (social democrats, etc.), the yellow ones had to be worn by Jews, the black stars marked “antisocials” and Sinti and Roma forced to wear brown stars.

"The Germans are very proud of their rocket." - It was not the first rocket but the first human-made object to reach space.
Funnily enough, the people who developed this rocket were the same people who worked with their boss, a man named Werner von Braun (I assume that Christoph Schneider is supposed to portray this gentleman in the scene "Mittelbau Dora"), an older gentleman with nice Alabama akzent, who developed the Apollo rocket with which you flew to the moon. "Operation Paperclip".
I don't want to claim that von Braun was a real Nazi, but he dreamed of being able to reach the moon and he didn't give a shit how and he knew exactly that the rocket, or the system for building the rocket, was built by forced laborers under the worst possible conditions . By the way, the Americans didn't give a shit either.

Hats off, your reaction is the best on the net in my opinion! I am really impressed. The red lasers symbolize the "red thread" as we say in Germany. Something that connects things, across all times and places. In Germany, it's violence, war and the unconditional will to always do better. I always say that we are the Vulcans of the real world. That's why Germans always seem so cool, to suppress the anger and violence that lies dormant within us. 😅 The Man behind the Tank is Karl Marx! The Woman plays Germania, a ficrional German Goddess. @arnonyhm4055 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

This is one of the best videos from Rammstein and at the same time one of the most difficult content to fully understand. Even though you got quite a lot of the content. The song is about Germany (Deutschland) and the band's feelings about their home country which has a rather violent history (not only in WW2). It is a kaleidoscope of scenes from 2000 years of German history (some more symbolic, others painfully accurate) and additionally some scenes that might happen in the future when archaeologists are searching for artefacts of German history.
The woman - as you already figured out - is Germania, played by the German actress Ruby Commey. Germania is not a literal person, but was a personification of Germany for centuries. And of course all other main roles are played by the six members of Rammstein.
The starting sequence with the Roman soldiers refer to the Roman attempt to conquer the main part of later Germany, which ended up desasterous for them in Teuteburg forrest. A few years later, a second and last attempt ended similar. The Germanic tribes were united (the first time) under Armenius, a son of a Germanic leader who was taken as hostage by the Romans, learned about Roman strategies and tactics and later returned to the tribes to fight on their side against the Roman empire. This is oftenly referred as the birth of Germany, even though it took a long time until 1871 AD that there was the first German state in this whole area, instead of multiple and small counties and kingdoms.
The scene when the monks seem to eat Germania references to the Thirty Year's War (1618-1648), which started as a religious war. As a result of that war - masses of people starved or died by plagues. And the church took what little they had left to live on.
If you are interested in more details about some of the historical events referenced in Rammstein's video, you may take a look at this content-wise analysis: th-cam.com/video/sc-euVL8xQs/w-d-xo.html
Even for me as a German guy there were some details that I was not aware of.
Also the lyrics are explained a bit and the assumed reason for Rammstein to come out with this video. And there is an explanation why the video caused some harsh reactions BEFORE it was fully published.

"Deutschland" by Rammstein is a profound piece that delves into the complex and often painful history of Germany. The song and its accompanying music video are rich in historical and cultural references, depicting various epochs and events in German history, from ancient times to the present. These portrayals illuminate the country's troubled past and reflect on its character and identity.
The refrain "Du (hast) hast mich" plays with the ambiguity of possession and dislike, indicating an ambivalent relationship with one's own nation - a mix of love, pride, pain, and criticism. This ambivalence is also reflected in the depiction of historical conflicts, including tensions between state power and ecclesiastical authority. The historical role of the Church, as both a moral and political force, is not directly addressed but could be implied through the symbolic and iconographic representation in the video.
The song also seems to be a critical reflection on nationalism and patriotism, showing how a country's past shapes its character as well as its present and future. It touches on moral questions and guilt, which could be viewed in the context of church teachings and the historical role of the Church as a moral authority.
Secularization, the move away from traditional church structures and belief systems, could also be part of the broader narrative of change and development in Germany. This is reflected in how the song deals with themes of personal and collective identity in a country with a burdened history.
Rammstein is known for its provocative and ambiguous artistry. "Deutschland" exemplifies their ability to tackle complex and controversial topics while leaving room for various interpretations and discussions. The band often avoids giving concrete explanations for their songs, allowing listeners to draw their own meaning from the deep layers of lyrics and imagery.

I've watched this video many times in the last few years and still find something new. There are so many references to German history, it's mind-boggling. Some scenes refer to real events and some of them are metaphors. The dog puppies for example could be Leonbergers, a dog breed from Germany nearly extinct after WW1. The scientists and the cardinal could reference the Nazi ideology creating a superhuman race of Aryans through science and mythology with the dogs as a placeholder for a pure breed/race. Germania wearing the eye patch first left and then right as a symbol for fascism and later socialism. The vitreous casket may refer to their song Sonne, and the wings to the song Engel. Maybe someday the band may reveal their thoughts about this masterpiece.

  • @Tiisiphone

This is by far the BEST interpretation of this video I ever saw on YT! You get almost everything right. 👍Rammstein indeed chose a German black actress to portray Germany in order to piss off the far right. She originates from Togo, a former german colony.
Germany rescuscitates the dead Teutonic Knights, a powerful christian military order involved in the Crusades.
The missiles you see are the V2, first ever ballistic missile, and first rocket to reach space. The direct ancestor of the Saturn 5 rocket that will bring Man to the Moon.
The dogs are Leonbergers, a typical german breed that went almost extinct before WWII: Germany bring them back to the world and is reborn as a democracy.
During riots in the 70's, you see the terrorists of the Baader-Meinhof Red Army Fraction group (communists) taking Germany hostage.
You also see the reunification of East and West Germany, with officials drinking champagne and hugging each other. Then for some reason it turns into an orgy!

The V2 rockets were stationed in Peenemünde and fired at England from there. The rockets were built in an underground work camp called "Dora". Thousands of prisoners died of hunger, disease or exhaustion. After the war, Wernher von Braun was largely responsible for the development of the space program and civilian rockets in the USA.

The National Socialists see themselves as left-wing politicians. The propaganda minister, Josef Goebbels, wrote in the NSDAP party newspaper “The Attack,” which appeared on December 6, 1931: “According to the idea of the NSDAP, we are the German left... Nothing is more hateful to us than the right-wing, national property-owning bloc.” Also Adolf Hitler declared: "We are socialists, we are opponents of today's capitalist economic system... and we are all determined to destroy this system at all costs." The same shitty destructive, fascistoid politics that we currently have in Germany with the green and red socialists.

I love how the question "I dont know if I'm gonna pause or just take it in" just went out the window really quick.
On first watch you really can't do anything but take it in. probably multiple watchthroughs. Idk how many times I watched the music video and there's probably still details I haven't noticed, and others I wouldnt have understood without watching other peoples analysis of the video. I imagine there's even more you miss if you have to read lyrics at the same time. Also some of the lyrics (most of the words starting with "über-" ) have double meanings
like "übernehmen" could mean either "to take over" or "to take on too much" and "übergeben" coul mean either "vomit" or "to give smth to someone"
I also think the message here was precisely not "Let's forget about the past". Look to the future, yes but do so while remembering the past to not make the same mistkes.
I love the Germania in this video, but I don't wanna hornypost

Regarding the different symbols on the prisoners:
During the Nazi era in Germany, various markings were used to identify and segregate different groups of people, particularly those who were targeted by the regime. These markings were part of a system of discrimination and persecution. Here are some of the key symbols used:
Yellow Star of David: Jewish individuals were required to wear a yellow Star of David badge on their clothing. This star had the word "Jude" (German for Jew) written in the center. The use of the yellow star was a way of singling out and stigmatizing Jewish people.
Pink Triangle: Homosexual men were often forced to wear a pink triangle badge. The pink triangle, pointing downward, was a symbol of shame and persecution. This group faced severe discrimination and persecution under the Nazi regime.
Black Triangle: People deemed asocial, which included those with mental or physical disabilities, Roma (Gypsies), and some others, were marked with a black triangle. This symbol was meant to identify those who were considered socially undesirable or a threat to the Nazi vision of a homogeneous society.
Red Triangle: Political prisoners, including communists, socialists, and other perceived political opponents, were marked with a red triangle. This group included individuals who resisted or opposed the Nazi regime in various ways.
Green Triangle: Criminals and habitual offenders, such as repeat offenders or individuals who violated Nazi laws, were marked with a green triangle.
Everyone belong to this "groups" were killed

@15:40 I grew up in the GDR - German Democratic Republic (Deutsche Demokratische Republik), like the members of Rammstein too. We called the GDR "den Arbeiter- und Bauernstaat" - "the workers' and peasants' state". You can see a significant part of the GDR flag in the background. Hammer and compass in a wreath of wheat. This symbolizes the workers' and farmers' state. (It seems to be that you don't have a word for "Ährenkranz". Blame it on Google Translate. Send them a postcard.). In this scene the lead singer represents Erich Honecker. He was like the Federal Chancellor in West Germany, but also the leader of the SED - "Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschlands" - "Socialist Unity Party of Germany". The SED emerged from the forced merger of various socialist and communist parties. We were Socialists, not Communists. Please notice, Socialism and Communism is not the same. Achieving communism was the social goal. But we never managed that. There is no money in communism. Everyone works and only takes what they need to live. That's what we were taught in school. The idea was that everyone is happy if they have enough to eat, clothing and a roof over their head. But this is not the case. Later in the video, prisoners are shown on the gallows waiting to be hanged. These include political prisoners. There were also German resistance fighters in the Third Reich who were held captive in camps and executed by the Nazis. Most of them were socialists and communists. Think about it. There is nothing wrong with wanting to create framework conditions in a country that serve the majority of people and not only a few. 🤔❤👍

Three Legions from (as I remember) only 15 existing roman leagions (at this time). This means the roman Empire lost 20% of their complete Military in a few days.
Think of a battle where 20% of US Army, Airforce and Navy will be lost. This would be three Aircraft Carrier groups, Hundreds or thousends of Airplanes, thousends of Tanks and (currently the US has 1.4 Million active Soldiers) 280.000 Soldiers KIA - in one week.

The Varus Battle or Hermann Battle or Battle of the Teutoburg Forest - three names for a historical event. In 9 AD, Germanic tribal warriors led by the Cheruscan Arminius defeated three Roman legions. It is said that between 2,500 to 5,000 Germanic people defeated 15,000 to 25,000 Romans. According to legend, only 1 Roman survived. A few years ago, confirmation of the battle was found in the Italian archives. The Italians used to deny this.
