I apologize in advance; I hate being this guy, but why do so many degreed educators responsible for developing ELA skills in students pronounce the word ekcetera? It is clearly abbreviated etc., and obviously pronounced "Et Cetera."
A holistic marking bin! At last someone calls it what it is ! A bin. A whole lot of stuff all mixed up in a bin. Could call it a conglomeration. Needs sorting into distinguishable parts. Ideal for those who just want to fudge some sort of lazy grading scheme. By adding the word "rubric" to the word holistic, those who formerly enjoyed using a red pen or pencil to inscribe a letter or number at the end of an assignment have found a new way to pretend that they are engaged in some sort of educational process. There is no such thing as a holistic rubric. It is simply holistic and has nothing to do with being a rubric. Rubrics were invented to correct the shortcomings of holistic grading practices. Properly constructed and used, rubrics are primarily a formative teaching tool. “You don’t really need to give feedback.“ So why bother in the first place? One starts to wonder if the purveyors of holistic rubrics ever talk to their students. You state that holistic rubrics have “high reliability” but “so subjective” . . . Huh? So how does this work? “Easy to interpret”? I am sorry, but many students will not know the difference between “highly coherent”, “coherent” , “somewhat coherent” , and “incoherent” all mixed in with “almost no grammatical errors”, “few grammatical errors”, “several grammatical errors” and “many grammatical errors”. “Fast marking”? I guess you get what you pay for. Anyone who openly believes that there is such a thing as a holistic rubric openly admits that they do not understand the basic concept of why the rubric was actually created in the first place. Somehow, someone, somewhere added the word holistic to the word rubric because it was trendy and created a Frankensteinian monster. It also allowed the creation of a new system of incomprehensible grading in place of facilitating the mastery of subject material. More smoke and mirrors in place of real education. Funny how so many just copy the folly of others without bothering to understand what is actually going on.
