    The prime minister was absolutely correct in his assessment of criticisms by organizations like Human Rights Watch and others with unrealistic expectations and who wish to see a full fledged democracy like the United States occur overnight. Ethiopia is a nation with no prior experience with democracy and we need gradual democratization.

    Haile Mariam Desalegn has transformed himself over the past 2years from a timid leader into a Meles-like leader: pragmatic, passionate and articulate. And his jewel in the crown is the fact he admits that he is "A Servant Leader." A born again leader can only be an asset to a nation. HMD continue to walk the talk!

    I am very much proud of PM Hailemariam Desalegn. He gave her the right answers. Having said that, with due respect the journalist did not get the chance to differentiate questions which were posted on Al Jazeera facebook page by Eritreans and some terrorist groups on behalf of Ethiopians.

    Amazing response!! As an Ethiopian, I am proud of H.E P.M Hailemariam Desalegn and you are really a brilliant Prime Minister of Ethiopia. P.M Hailemariam has the perfect response to all questions of Al Jazeera member, Martine Dennis.
    I am so surprised on the points below
    1. Yes, Ethiopian democracy is emerging and in process in parallel to the economic development of the country. The level of democratic discourse kind is different from country to country with times of democracy, social and economic development.
    2. Yes, Ethiopia is a country of multi-ethnic and multi religious country. The ideology of chauvinist i.e. one language, which is Amharic, one people and one country will never materialized in Ethiopia.
    3. Yes, by any standard, in Ethiopia political power complains is not acceptable. It is only people can give or deny political power by vote process, not inherited.
    4. Yes, basic Ethiopian systems should be generated from inside, not from outsiders.
    5. Yes, Our fast economic growth simply comes because we make our people to be part and parcel of all economic class….
    6. Yes, in Ethiopia, those of house in making and democracy cannot be built within few years of time, We are on the right track of democracy process.
    7. Yes, let out people judge us, not some body from outside. If anybody wants to know the democracy process in Ethiopia, ask people not political parties, the ultimate say of the people is the most important and you get the right image of democracy in Ethiopia.
    8. Yes, we are coming out of a deep poverty.
    9. Yes, we are always criticized because we generated and used a system on the base our situation for our development issue. Thus, nothing is wrong with us, rather the outsiders’ criticism.
    10. Yes, the most important thing of the Nile river dam issue is mutual understanding and mutual respect among Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia; and it is the bases of all negotiations. On Nile issue, it is hard to say this and that. We are really inseparable with Nile River sharing people; we all sink or swim together and we have to choose either of the one. We all have chosen to swim together.
    I wonder Hailemariam’s intellectual brilliance and it has to be measured his level of intelligence, such as "wise," "inventive," "curious," sophisticated," "complicated," and "insightful".
    Thank you Martine Dennis and P.M Hailemariam Desalegn.

      Are you leaking the government ass or the party ass , which one is buying you to blab , anyway whatever you said it doesn't mean that is the truth . I for one can say this Ethiopian doesn't have a voice of reason for politics issues nor a people who give a shit or understand how poltics work . Let America choose for us as always , if you noticed noticed look at the flag star ! How many of you knew what is that meant and why the people reacting or why the country become to secular , ask shit heads .

    I support the Prime Minister's response that Ethiopia is fledgling democracy and that Ethiopia will not become a full democracy in one year. We need only to look at the example of Iraq where a full democracy was implemented and now that country has been ravaged by civil war ever since. When Saddam Hussein was in power he was from the religious minority Sunni but the ethnically dominant Arabs. When the U.S. overthrew Saddam and implemented a democracy the historically oppressed but religious majority Shi'ites gained power and used that power to disenfranchise the religious minority Sunnis. Now we see ISIS which is an Sunni Islamic extremist organization that arguably was created as a result of the disenfranchisement of the Sunni religious minority by the democratically elected Shi'ite majority. This is just one example of the mess that Democracies can create in countries who have had no prior experience with that form of government. So Ethiopians must build a democratic culture where public debates, voting, and peaceful transitions of power are the norm. The EPRDF is implementing gradual democratization that takes into account Ethiopia's unique history and I fully support that approach.

    unlike the rest of you, i will try to keep a leveled head and give an honest opinion, i believe ethiopian democracy is still weak, but i don't believe its not there at all, it is there, and as far as the election goes, the ruling party has held nine or ten debates that are aired in national television, opposition party members have had ample amount of time to express their views to the nation, but heres the cookie, they have no idea what they are doing, its not the ruling party's fault that they are not coming across as they are on top of the issues, and who brings town hall issues to a national discussion, because that is all they have been doing, they will lose and they will have nobody to blame but themselves.
    sorry dudes.

    • @asefawoldu1777
      @asefawoldu1777 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      sam b. Exactly! The opposition has presented no unified and clear alternative to the party in power. I know the opposition disagrees with the EPRDF but where do they stand on the issues facing Ethiopia today? What is there stance on the "no peace no war" policy with Eritrea and if they do not support it what do they intend on replacing it with? What is there stance on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and the recent agreement between Ethiopia, Egypt, and Sudan? How would they propose to solve the power outage issue that affects the country? How would they approach the war with Al-Shabab? These are just a few of the issues facing our country and rather than the opposition simply disagreeing with everything the EPRDF supports why not present their own alternative political platform.

      I'm going to really need you to really look around and really understand the people every top nada TPLF of Ethiopia but the people not the ones you know are the ones in your family or your friends but the 19 million people including the millions that are leaving the country the millions that are starving the millions that are in prison getting beat up for absolutely no crime whatsoever before you actually talk about democracy also know the history of Ethiopia and where it is now what our fathers fought for freedom and where we are now

    • @asefawoldu1777
      @asefawoldu1777 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hirut Starving? The Ethiopian government has created an early famine detection system where those regions that may be affected by drought or crop failures the government will act quickly to identify those parts of the country and provide assistance. This policy has prevented a repeat of the terrible famine that hit the country in 1984 due to the failed economic policies of Mengistu Haile Mariam. You have no idea what you are talking about you have no facts simply hate in your heart for another ethnic group.

    • @mafficloudner3114
      @mafficloudner3114 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      hirut Could you please stop make it like a war between that extreme and this extreme..its a debate between two brothers for a common goal 'ETHIOPIA' so start asking like what alternative i'm i going to provide or my party needs to provide in order to tackle the short comings of EPRDF? what kind of policy should we create to deliver the 'millions' of our country men from poverty line instead of only denouncing what has been done so far. Or introduce us with what your party develop as an alternative so that we can discuses up on it or work for it..But instead your style of debating only initiate another problem which is extremism..so why not focusing on the solution and help your self to be the engine of change rather than 'Insult' and 'Discrimination'?

    Obviously, there is no difference between Ethiopian government and north Korea when it comes to democratic value. Ethiopia become a one party state in each election cycle. If the ruling party won by 96.667% last time...and what it means now. The current groups topped a communist party by the barrels of guns with 5% of popular support, besides U.S. and UK governments. The biggest problem in Ethiopian democratic process is US and UK governments that legitimized this thugs for the last 24 years because of Somali civil war... and knowing all the criminal activities, they allowed them kill to oromo students, and over 100,000 are imprison. Over 2 millions become a refugees across Africa and beyond. If this course is changed, they will put the entire horn of Africa in danger. Believe me a mother of all wars are in full gears.

    So what credible entity (Domestic or International) can EPRDF (Ethiopias ruling party) use to measure its Human Rights Index, Freedom of Speech E.tc...? It's none, no one because no one can make the EPRDF "look" like it respects any rights! The prime minister's demeanor is the archetypal demeanor of what every Ethiopian knows to be emblematic of the character of the ruling party. This is the same mindgame they use against their own people when their citizens cite sources, Al-Jazeera is a terrorist organization that just had an interview with the "PM" when it, itself has been deemed as a news organization which incites violence; this fact by itself annihilates their credibility. The unfortunate Zone9 Bloggers are being tortured, while the "puppet" court & their spy agency, INSA , fabricate evidence for more than a year now. It took them more than 8 months to be charged & now it seems they are intent on making an example out of them to decimate any type of expression, even "online", or hopefully delay their release which I doubt now.We live under the barrel of a gun, under the guise of security, we are intimidated daily by soldiers walking around with AK's for no reason but election time. Legitimate political parties like Semayawi have their members arrested, Andinet party the most popular has been infiltrated & disassembled as anyone interested will know. What hope do we have but armed struggle?

    • @mogegeb7517
      @mogegeb7517 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      MIke Fitsum Why do you think that only people living in Ethiopia should have a say? Can't you critisize Al-Shabaab because you are not living in Somalia? Can't you condemn the acts of Hitler because you didn't grow up in Germany?
      Often people from the outside can have a more objective approach to these matters than people who have grown up within a situation and got their opinions skewed(or not) due to the communities they grew up in. For me, born outside of Ethiopia, I can truly say that I grew up to Haile Gebreselassie on TV and didn't think, or care about his ethnicity or religion for that matter...I just hoped he would win. The habeshas grown up here look at all Habeshas(Ethiopians and Eritreans) the same way, and we want the best for all the etnicities of both countries. So please stop coming with absolute statements like this. Sometimes the advantage of being an insider can also give you biased opinions due to influence during upbringing.
      That being said, I think HMD seems to be a legit leader. The questions and critic raised by the host were weak, as opposed to the responses which seemed sincere and solid

    • @michaelarega7782
      @michaelarega7782 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mose Mehari Gebreselassie Are you really comparing the Ethiopian Gov't with That of hitler and Al-Shabaab? All am saying is only the people who are here can vouch for wats going on in the country, I invite you to actually come here and see for yourself that in the past couple decade there have been segnificant changes through out there country. People abroad can be swayed to believe that whats happeningg here is unjust and unfair because they are not here to judge and the media specially those who are funded by oppositions like ESAT can use this to chug out propaganda against the gov't. Am not saying there is perfect democracy (but in reality there is no country with a perfect democracy) and that everyones voice is being heard but they are actually doing a good job of keeping the country safe and stable and sustaining and economic growth. The bottom line being is that any person who is habesha weather being diaspora do have a say in the matter but they should be backed with facts.

    • @mogegeb7517
      @mogegeb7517 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not comparing the Ethiopian government to that of hitler. I actually said that what the prime minister said seems to make sense. My point is that you do not have to live in a country to be able to condemn what they are doing. That's what you wrote, but its far from an absolute truth. If you see a development with you own eyes, it doesn't mean that there might be parts that you have not seen that is worsening which would eventually force you to look into number and statistics just like an outsider would have to. Even a CEO of a company doesn't just think his company is doing well because they are making money, but he need to have a statistical approach to find out which part of the organization is underperforming, and which parts are doing well(even the department making the most money can sometimes be the most inefficient one). That's why the biggest companies spend a lot of money on consultants since they can see things with new eyes as outsiders. The people working there can have a very myopic look into things, while people who are outside can have an easier way of having a meta look into things.

But violence will take us back to null and void, so if want development ,we have to reject those who think violence can make a change.

  • @lionofyuda
    @lionofyuda 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is very important historical document. When this man regains his own mind, he would hang himself or his political group hangs him. Black people will never get trust and love when a dictator like this shows rudeness and ignorance in front of the world community.
    For the last 25 years, democracy has been a failed issue in Ethiopia, one more again, all what he does is reading Meleze’s rehearsal scripts preserved and provided by Sibhat Nega.
    Actually, Al-Shabaab is not Ethiopia’s issue, it is Somalia’s. Ethiopian Muslims do not even know or understand about Al-Shabaab’s ideology. Is not even a topic for discussion or concern in a typical Ethiopian family?
    I think Both Muslims or Christians agree on that. If any misunderstanding arises between them, as usual the blame goes on to the government for the creation of agents and fake political activists to punish both.

    Al jazeera. And they need to watch out semayawi party because in my opinion it is inevitable that they will instigate violence in that country.

    How hard can it be to develop democracy in Ethiopia the people are not like back in 1960 s or 1980s . The people are seeking for there democracy and having the freedom to speak there opinions without being bit up by uneducated federal police. Without having no treating to them why should the young men's and women's bit up and arrested . There is a way to provide people true justice how hard can it be when the people are cooperated with police and the government federal police but the good and inesent citizens being arrested and bit . The government dictated the all people by treating them like Slavs. Hoping for best and fearing to surviving from being bit . THERE'S NO FREEDOM . WE MAYBE NOT DEVELOP FATHERS ECONOMICALLY DEVELOP THE COUNTRY. BUT WE CAN HAVE THE DEMOCRACY AND THE FREEDOM TO HAVE SPEAK OUR OPINIONS AND EXPERIENCE ANY BELIEVERS AND PROSPERITY.

I think the presenter was good ... she tried her best... he just does not understand ... his personal dream at the end of the interview was much better !

  • @kale012

    Mr. Desalegnye would make a great reporter. The man spent 25 minutes giving the journalist(who reports for a living) pointers on how to ask questions. It's not his fault tho he is used to being asked scripted questions by ETV reporters it should come as no surprise to anyone that he did so terribly in this interview. It was like watching judge Judy asking the defendant questions that are backed with evidence and the defendant (HM) saying the questions were unfair. One word of advice when u win the elections this week can you at least put out numbers that seem reasonable please none that we won by 99.63% stuff it's an insult to the intelligence of the people of this planet. Come on man what would the aliens say ?? *** I understand it's human tendency to react with emotions to these matters but please be kind to one another always no matter what.

Gold medal goes to ASSEFA WOLDU lol if you only knew how ethnically divided we are you might reconsider what you doing supporting this so called ETHIOPIAN government. Your heart knows knows majority ethiopians hate this government not because they came from tigray but because their policy and their betrayal to this beautiful country . The more you try to defend this government the more we sum u up with them. the funny thing is its 100% guarantee all those of you who comment here weather by your real name or fake name are either paid TSILAS or just Tsilas ...just know u aint doing anything significant here except adding oil to the fire . FYI, don't even think I'm eritrean, i can not be associated with bandas and you people are their cousins.
