Thanks for taking the time to make this video. It's going to be a big help as I dive into bringing my PET back to life!

That is a nice system. I am glad you were able to get it up and running! I can imagine how much fun it must have been to type in a long BASIC program on that chiclet keyboard back in the day! Ouch!

@@HutchCA I have had my eye on two of them in Tucson on Craigslist. They are newer models than this with real keyboards - the guy wants $500 each for them and $100 for the disk drive. Not a bad price, but I don't want it that bad... I offered him $350 with one drive but he never responded.

What a fantastic video, I'm surprised you don't have more subscribers. It's clear to see how you're completely absorbed restoring this wonderful old machine. I wonder how the keys have held up - my memory of them is that repeated use (especially hammering on the space key playing space invaders) could cause them to split in two!

@@HutchCA yeah I remember the plastic surface peeling at the edges (or more likely, as a child I peeled them off). You can see a badly-cracked keyboard here - imgur.com/a/esW26NB

Great work! I've got a similar 2001 that needs some work but it's been a bit daunting. Your video definitely helps!

I have good memories of a machine like this at my high school that looked just like this, around 1980. It had a blue CRT bezel and a blue sticker, and it had the Panasonic cassette recorder with white keys (I understand there were many combinations of bezels, stickers and cassette recorders). Even though almost no-one used the machine, I'm pretty sure the keyboard was in worse shape than yours, and it got worse over time, when other kids found out how to play "Space Intruders". Fortunately the school also got a C64 so then I had the 2001 and 4032 to myself again :-)
I finally bought myself a PET on eBay a number of years ago and paid over $400 for it. The case and the sticker say it's a 4016 (with a 9-inch monitor and a full keyboard; no cassette recorder) but it has 32K on board, all factory-soldered, so I think someone did a motherboard swap. It was built in 1980. I was kinda hoping I'd have to do some troubleshooting and fixing but no: it worked great right out of the box.
By the way I'm pretty sure that Fast Forward button is supposed to latch; maybe there's something broken inside?

My dad was a research scientist in the 70s/80s so we had these at home years before release, other kids had never seen a computer. I used to play rhino 😃

    Hey Chuck,
I just got my Commodore PET 2001-8 working last night. I am having a problem with the internal tape drive, but I have an external drive that does work.
What would the command be, to load a program from the external tape drive port?

    • @jeffnay6502
      @jeffnay6502 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried LOAD "$",2 and LOAD "*",2
Both commands searches the tape for programs, and finds both programs on the tape, but does not return to READY, unless I press the STOP/RUN key.
Then I have to rewind the tape ans specify which program to load. But the ,2 does work.

It doesn't look like anyone's even typed on that thing. :-)

@@HutchCA I "think" i've narrowed my 4016 problem down to somewhere in the ram (unsocketed and piggybacking didn't work), and had planned on ordering the Tynemouth board anyway, so i went ahead and placed an order for their big board. It'll be interesting to diagnose exactly where my problem lies. Looking forward to more videos

My video is a little shaky every now and then, any ideas how to fix that?

No, I meant the video on my Commodore PET's monitor, shakes a little.
