A great movie, and such a great performance by Robert Preston as Centauri...always great to see reactions to it on my favorite channels. You guys should definitely react to one of Preston's other great performances as Dr Finegarten in the terrific Blake Edwards comedy...S.O.B. from 1981.💯👍
@@RKnights It is a pretty DARK comedy...just to give fair warning...but it is also pretty darned goofy. And as a bonus, I believe Rosanna Arquette gets topless, among others. LOL
@@infostorm618 Very true...but that one is also a musical...and I am not sure how R Knights feels about musicals. LOL They are not everyone's cup of tea. But I will say that The Music Man is a musical that even a lot of people that don't like musicals actually quite often like. LOL
As a kid, The Black Hole (1979) a Disney sci-fi action suspense made a huge impression on me. I saw it in the theater at 6 years old. I even had action figures from this film. Oh man, Space Camp & The Explorers are excellent.
Originally saw this movie when I was seven and loved it: even now, nearly forty years later, it still hits me in the feels when the brother realizes the star fighter in the game is the same ship Alex is leaving in...
"Flight Of The Navigator" from 1986 would be a fun sci fi/adventure film for you guys to watch. It also costars a young Sarah Jessica Parker. Highly recommended.
46:52 Mark! I'm Viewer 1,283! 🎉 Thumb Up #154! 👍 Ray & Alex, you're welcome, and thanks! 😊 Notes: A re-upload! Well, it took me a while to notice that I had seen the previous upload, and so I wrote my comments then. 😊 But I can't tell what is missing now, that you had to edit out. So that's a good edit job right there! 😎 Bye-bye for now and namaste! 🙏
Don Bluth once stated that you could show a child nearly everything as long as there is a happy end. Remember when in many animated Disney movie the parent of a main character dies? Sure, it messes you up a little, but it's just a movie, it's easier to bounce back, but at the same time it prepares you for it in real life. Not saying a real death in the family won't hurt, but being prepared for it can lessen the blow. A blow that will come sooner or later.
I remember reading about this movie when it was in pre production, computer graphics magazine and 3dfx magazine I think. First cgi space ships. For me the story was pretty solid and some life lessons. That and I’m an Alex as well and at one point worked at a trailer park. It did feel like this movie
The ending makes it look like Alex and Meg are leaving Earth forever but given how fast the spacecraft are they could easily visit on weekends . I'm sure the Star League would give them a star car of their own to use.
54 and i have always loved this fantastic movie! Robert Preston played the same basic character in "The Music Man"! I also loved Playboy Playmate Jolanda Egger! The 80's were the best time to be a teen!
Definitely a matinée flick. I found the theme song a few years ago and downloaded it. Now whenever I'm feeling a bit dragged out, I can put it on for a slight pick-me-up.
I remember seeing an article when this comming out. I think it was in starlog from March 1984. It told how this was the first movie to use 100% computer generated images graphics. Extra note Centauri's car was in Back to the Future part II. When the jeep is coming in for a landing. It is parked at the curb.
The movie is fundamentally based on the then rumor that the air force placed video games to find the best potential pilots, essentially a recruitment tool just as depicted. Lol, that’s so insane but it made sense when you were a gen x kid. And to be fair, it’s not like it was easy to research the issue back in 84.
There are two childhood sci-fi movies I love as a kid (apart from the usual suspects, like Star Wars),... Flight of the Navigator and this one. I liked the look of the Zandozan, the alien bounty hunters.
This was the first movie my family rented after buying a vcr. We couldn’t afford to go to movies so this was actually quite a treat, a full movie without commercials in much higher quality than broadcast tv. Fwiw, the fx were as obviously fake then as they are now. It was advertised that it was all cg as sort of a selling point. Fun fact: test audience liked the “Beta” Alex bits so more were added. That’s why he’s got an obvious wig.
What would be super sweet about a good modern made Last Starfighter video game is you would start off in the trailer park playing the video game, and you'd have to get good enough at THAT game to win then for Centauri to come down and get you and take you to the real ship. Plus once you train a new class of pilots it now becomes a tactical space game as you command a squad of Gunstars, then a fleet.
This movie and the book Ender's Game were possibly influenced by the urban legend of _Polybius_ which was supposed to be an arcade game that showed up in 1980 and was rumored to be super advanced for the time, and created by the government for a variety of reasons, including possibly as a recruitment tool for the military or to test mind control on the players. 😂
Another similar premise to "Ender's Game" is "Toys." The uncle is planning to use toy jets controlled by kids playing video games in real military situations.
🔔 RAY: I just saw an interesting way to avoid copyright strikes! This guy was reacting to the new Superman movie trailer and he shut the sound off when it started while simultaneously activating captioning.
There was a tabletop mini-game and eventually tabletop RPG that I played. The mini-game was simply a hex based map tile set that was randomly assembled of the asteroid battle. Not overly complex, but fun. The RPG was not particularly engaging as they had so little to pull from. The supplements came out too slowly and it died on the vine. Once I became a more experienced gamer, I was able to overcome the derth of material, but by that time we had moved on from that genre.
CGI as we know it today did not exist at the time this movie was filmed. The Gunstar ships, Kodan ships, etc (only 27 mins of screen time) were created using the Cray X-MP Supercomputer, which was the world's faster computer from 1983-1985. Also, the Starfighter arcade game was built solely for the film, and was never available commercially. Atari had planned to release a version based on the movie, but upon seeing the finished film, Atari abandoned the project.
There was a game that meant to be based on this movie but it got caught up in delays, mergers & other issues ultimately resulted in it getting shelved. TBH I would love to play this game today with those visuals. Next in the old movie watches is Enemy Mine (1985) very similar feel (as in production) to this one & is a great movie. Onward & upward (hate when movies that have been uploaded for months get hit with strikes)
one of the first movies with extensive use of CGI. It was created on a cray super computer and right after the movie came out ILM bought the company that did the effects.
There is photos of the film makers inside the computer and the computer had a wrap around bench that was used to make the CGI. The Crays were in limited use with most going to NASA or major banking groups in that time. They also had to fire one firm for the CGI that was producing better images but was estimated to take over 20 years to render the needed shots. The cgi was downgraded by a factor of ten in detail and this is one film an restoration of the vision would be good. With a second movie could have his brother and a restored Starfighter Corps under Alex. Could also play it in a period of bringing Earth into the Alliance.
Fun Fact! CGI was so new at the time it had to be paid for with no idea of how it would turn out, and it was the last aspect of the film finished. Frankly, they should have went with practical models.
No! It would have looked like that schlock Battle Beyond the Stars and been relegated to obscurity. The Cray Super Computer did a great job and added to the charm of the movie. It looked amazing for the time.

One of THE most beautiful and logical designs for a spacefighter. You can see where the Starfury got its inspiration from.
The elderly actress who played Granny in the trailer park is Meg Wyllie. She played the head Talosian in Star Trek TOS.
She had several wonderful performances in Perry Mason episodes and many other things for years.
Greetings Starfighter.
We have been recruited by the Star league to defend the frontier, against Zur and the Kodan armada.
I'm 51 and this is one of my all-time favorite movies.
Have you guys reacted to "Enemy Mine"? a really good 80s Sci Fi movie with Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr.
so underrated
The book is really good as well.
You can see its impact on "Galaxy Quest" and other science fiction.
Such an imaginative classic!

Let's say I'm old ... I saw this movie in the theater. And years later I read a book about the making of and all the CGI techniques used on it.
Ohh i missed this on the 1st upload
And there's even a little Alex intro lol perfect
I miss Alex. He needs to come back and make an appearance
This is another classic for me, that I used to watch on VHS!

You should check out the 1981 "Outland" staring Sean Connery and Peter Boyle. Highly underrated Sci-Fi flick.
The score has John Williams feels to it. Really epic
Frequency and Innerspace with Dennis Quaid are terrific sci-fi films.
If the repair took all day, I'm pretty sure Elvira missed her soaps.
Also, Otis is the best.
Have you guys seen "Speed Racer" yet? It's a marvel to the eyes, almost psychedelic.
lil brother Louis' friend was a young Wil Wheaton btw
The actor that played the Xandoxan assasin was played by Gul Dukat from DS9
