Me too . I found this online. Take a tube of cheap toothpaste and put it in a spray bottle fill it up with water. Spray outside around windows and doorways Its really helped at my place. They don't like the smell of it. Also peppermint liquid works just as well. They don't like minty smells
I built the trap exactly as described. It worked perfectly. Upon its first use, I watched three stink bugs approach the trap and climb right up and in. The only thing I don't understand is also what you had mentioned. They crawl down into the bottle through the spout and navigate around to the inside. Yet for some unknown, they can't reverse their way back around to the inside of the opening and back out. I must have watched this one stink bug walk around the opening from inside the trap a dozen times without just going through the opening and back ouside the same way he came in. After about twenty minutes, I went to bed figuring he woul be gone the next morning. But he never got out. Totally bizarre. Oh, as far as how to dispose of them... I just undo the tape from the top, take out the light, and dump them into the toilet. Then, hasta la vista stinkos - FLUSH!!!

My 2 cents: I agree with using a second bottle to separate the light source from the capture chamber to make disposal easier. The other thing I would suggest is to use a fabric tape on the outside rather than a masking tape. Something like a medical tape would make it much easier for them to climb to their doom. I intend to make and test this tonight. Well thought out folks!
I made this trap to use on my screened in porch where the stink bugs seem to love to gather and tried it for 3 weeks, a few stink bugs went in it but there were still a lot hanging on the walls and screen then I read that stink bugs put off a scent that attracts other stink bugs so I parked my wet dry on the porch and each time I seen one I sucked it into the Vac and sealed the end of the nozzle just to make sure it wouldn't crawl out. (the vac has a bag in it) after 2 weeks I did not see another stink bug and it has been 3 months now. Seems if you can keep them from spraying their scent to attach other stink bugs you can get rid of them
I used leftover black grill spray paint to spray the side of the bottle, left a portion of bottom clear for the light to shine through. I used small pieces of poster tape (double sided adhesive tape) to glue the top funnel portion to the bottle base. I also used poster tape pieces on the sides of the bottle for the bugs to crawl up. I got a cheap $1 L.E.D. light from Walmart (in a bin with small flashlights and head lights you put on your head in the camping dept). I placed the L.E.D. light in the base of a dark small plant pot and placed the bug bottle inside the pot over the light (stabilizes the bottle and holds the light). The light can be turned on before placing the bottle over it and the light doesnt get ruined from bug crap, and you dont have to maneuver a pen in the bottle to turn it on. Cheaper alternatives

Heather Atkins I missed Those comments. Some people actually believe that these bugs are reliable? They missed the fact that these bugs or what ever they are, are foreign and may have a greater purpose where they are from.
They do kill a lot of insects on most of our plants, but are not quite friendly on some, this topic is quite unsettling. If this bug benefits you than keep it going, and if it does not than eliminate them. I respect the way that you handle your live stock if you respect mine. Mann collect your stink bugs and sell or give them to whom values them. There.
I made several variations of this before I saw this video. I would quickly recommend that a piece of light cardboard be rolled around the bottom of the bottle instead of black tape and that it be long enough so that the light can be put UNDER it instead of inside it, this way you don't waste a light every time or play with the bugs to get the light back. What also works is get a big pot that you can fill halfway with soapy water and hang a light over it, a blacklight works best. I used an old fish aquarium, wrapped it in aluminum foil, and put a blacklight in the hood. Trapped several hundred a week.
Just ran out to get the light. Found at the Dollar Tree for $1.00 each and they had an eight pack of batteries for $1.00. I will be trying it with these. It may work as well as the 6.00 light you mentioned. I hope so.
My 3rd grade class just made these for one of their final projects. Super easy! Several teachers will be testing out these traps as will our maintenance crew at our school. Excellent idea!
You can trap stink bugs outside by hanging a wet towel. Drape it over a chair or clothes line around dusk. In the morning, you should have a big collection. Just dunk the entire towel into a bucket of soapy water. This will not get rid of stink bugs completely but it will help to reduce their population. I have had major success using neem oil. I love it because it is 100% safe and natural. I have kids and dogs so I don't like to use harsh chemicals around my home. I spray it on plants and around my windows and doors. There is a video on my youtube channel about how to use it to eliminate stink bugs if anyone needs more information.
I've heard of folks using neem oil before with success, I'll have to try it. I have had success also with treating my window screen / sills with Denatured Alcohol as well. Trouble is that's a tab pricey and requires re-application for good effect. More frequent applications to start then maintenance as you see the need.
I wonder if this works with the harlequin stinkbug in Australia. I got their numbers down by raking up all the dry leaves under a spruce tree where they were wintering. I did it in the heat of summer so they scattered and died of exposure. Soapy water kills the infant's but I did notice that they love water, I have some plants that must be filled with water for the lilly to come and they segregate here. Thanks for your comment. JoJoZen: they say diatomaceous earth works well. Dust it on all your shrubs and the leaf litter--it adds calcium to the soil and dries out their exoskeletons.

just a sugestion for your idea use a double bottom on the bottle that slides onto the trap bottle to hold the light so it is removeable for battery replacement and to keep it clean i use a similar stile trap for japanese beetles a pile of them will stink horribly till you empty it

Great idea have you thought about just setting the light under the plastic and surrounding it with black tape so it's not inside the jar. Would that work?
I made one yesterday. Plugged it in about 4PM and checked this morning and there are about 8 bugs in there! IT WORKS!!! Less than 24 hrs and I'm catching alot of bugs. Let me add that we only saw about 1 bug a day on our wall so there are more in your house than you realize! They are good hiders!! I did buy a plug-in light though so I won't go thru alot of batteries. I just cut a "doggie door" type hole in the bottom to put the plug thru and taped it up really good. How about a minor improvement to even prevent them from climbing back up: rather than placing the light in the bottom of the Pepsi container, you place it UNDER the container. Then you can put some water in the container, with a few drops of detergent to break the surface tension, then when they fall in, they will drown. Similar to a wasp trap with the fluid on the bottom.
I saw another trap that was supposedly tested by Va Tech. A pan of soapy water and a full spectrum light, eq, I saw was a CF, shining done on the water.
It's 11 p.m. at night and a stink bug just started flying under a light in my living room. I didn't know what it was until my little dog found where it landed and I looked it up on Google. Just found your video. Thank you for sharing! Looks like there's some work to do in starting to reinforce seals around the outside my home and making a few traps to lay out at night. Oh, goodness!

This is an excellent trap for these pesty stink bugs!! Here in NY in February, we still see them on a daily basis! The worst is when they get in the bed! 😩😵 They may be harmless but they are scary looking enough that my children and I prefer to remove them. Thanks for sharing this great tip!
I like these traps -- I have a few of them made. I made some minor changes with mine though -- I put water in the bottom of the bottle, along with dish soap. When they go down the funnel they hit the soapy water and die in about 5 minutes or so. It works very well at killing them, and it's safe. I put the light underneath the bottle and have the bottle rest on top of the light, so it still makes them want to fly inside. You don't have to use the soapy water though -- another good way to kill them is to put the entire trap in the freezer (once it's full...obviously!); they will be frozen & killed or slowed down enough to stop moving entirely in about 1-2 hours or so. Then dump and flush or dump them outside in a compost. Also -- these traps work very well when used "manually" as well, without the light. If you see a bug on the wall / window / ceiling, take the trap in your hands and try to get it around the bug and knock it down into the funnel. Once it's in there, it will not be able to get out. Works better than crushing them, most of the time they won't release the stink smell, but sometimes they will anyway, as just disturbing them can cause them to release it automatically -- they don't have to be crushed / killed instantly for them to release the stink...but most of the time I've found that using the funnel manually on a live one won't cause it to release the stink.
+surgeyX Nice! I had the same idea, I was thinking of somehow putting the light underneath the OUTSIDE of the trap, so that I could turn it on and off easier between night and day. I imagine these traps really work the best at night, but not really during the day, right? I plan to make a bunch and I don't want to have to disassemble each one every morning to shut off the light. With the light on the outside, the soapy water is another good idea. I couldn't find these lights at the local Home Depot (Lowe's had them though), so researched the suggested light on Amazon and it seems that the current version shuts off automatically after 30 minutes. No good! +MojoSpoonful Yeah those are the same kind of lights I use (the first link) -- just make sure to get rechargeable AA batteries for it, as it will eat through standard batteries that can't be recharged in no time. Yeah that's pretty much how I do it, put cardboard or some kind of material to block the light on the side so they want to go to the top of the bottle, and the light only shines through the bottle. I live in Buffalo, kind of close -- they were here all summer, but as it's getting colder now, they seemed to have died down quite a bit...hopefully they're not resting in dim corners of my house / basement / attic and want to come out when it snows and I have the heat turned on, lol.
First thank you. I was thinking about the upgrade. If you take another bottle and cut it in two places to be just a roller. You add this roller from the bottom and you pierce for cord and wrap with the tape you can use the charger power in to put a pair of LEDs and an LED diode resistor. Then water can be placed in the bottom of the upper bottle. I wish you a nice day :)~
So I made kind of the same thing today. Except, I powered it with LEDs powered by a solar charger. I also used the bottom of another Pepsi bottle inverted to house the lighting so I didnt have to mix lighting and stink bugs, now they will be easy to dispose of. Wrapped it with tape of course. For the ladder I used mesh tape for drywall, they should easily be able to climb up there. Also lined the inside of the bottle with clear insecticide. Made this all with leftover stuff in my garage.

Neat. Only thing I question are the life of the batteries. How long will they last? Would be nice if the light could be turned off and on without taking the whole contraption apart.
Great Idea, but they want more heat than the LED can provide. So I built the trap just like you described only I modified the bottom with a small candle bulb wired into the bottom. Puts off the heat they are looking for and seems to be working better than the LED. Im going to modify it again with a "Roof" of sorts and a mirror to reflect the light back inside to prevent them from going to the ceiling and looking down inside which seems to happen 50% of the time. -Thanks for the Great idea!
I just came back from the future to let you know, we still have stink bugs !!! but your invention is keeping them at bay. No Im from the year 2019 and they are invading us still..... LOL by the way I love how you said they get there friends to help them out..... LOL
Disposal tip. After collecting a bunch of bugs, we stick the whole trap in the freezer for about 30 mins. This kills the bugs, or slows them do enough to easily empty into the toilet. This saved us from making new traps after throwing the bug filled traps away and from a melee of not dead bugs flying free in the bathroom when we tried to empty.
Great video on how to build a cheap Stink Bug Trap. Those pesky things have been around my property all year. Since winter is coming on, I know they will increasing want to come inside. He states that a good place to locate is in the attic. I'm also experimenting with yellow jacket traps.
Last year stinkbugs age huge holes in my tomatoes, not the leaves, the tomatoes...and before they were even close enough to being ripe to pick and ripen indoors. I'm going to make these to put at the four corners of my veggie garden. Thanks and God bless you for the inexpensive ingenuity.
Trust me, once you see a camelback cricket in your basement climbing on walls and jumping 20ft in the air, you will start having coffee and tea with stinkbugs.
You need to make a version with an easy to remove light attatched to the bottom instead of inside the actual trap, that you can plug in, so you won't have to worry about changing batteries and stuff, then you can also add some soapy water to the inside of the trap, so whatever bugs fall into it won't even be able to climb up the walls because it'll be all slippery. Probably would be less stinky too :P
So you are saying that the stink bugs cannot climb the plastic unless there is the masking tape so why did you explain that the stink bugs ( once inside ) will climb the inside of the trap ( without tape )?
Definitely trying this. These bugs are all over here in NC. They’re annoying! I can deal with them but my wife freaks out. I usually spray them with a bottle of water mixed with dawn dish soap
Get the cheap Hydrogen Peroxide sprayers at Walmart. Dump the H2O2 and refill with 90% Isopropyl Alcohol. A squirt or two does them in in about 2 minutes. Instantly blinds them so they don't fly. I doesn't stain anything and evaporates quickly. They either don't squirt or the stuff neutralizes the smell. much better than squashing. It's actually fun, got a sprayer in almost every room.
Nugget The Beagle He said he dumped out the hydrogen peroxide and was just using the alcohol. However, be careful about how much isopropyl alcohol you breath in! The fumes are not good for you.
I'm sure you've made modifications since this video, but how about seating the light inside a cardboard collar underneath the bottle a) it keeps the light shaded so they don't congregate underneath either the collar or the shaded taped area b) it allows you to turn out the light easily but mainly it allows you to drown the little buggers in the bottle, so ensuring they die quickly rather than slowly suffocating slowly,. Though I don't want to live with bugs I also don't want to torture them.
Yes, also it keeps you from having to touch the bugs to get the light out. Only thing is you have to shield the sides of the light so they just don't hang around outside the bottle.

But they're not going to any time soon. Conversely, their numbers are growing at crazy rates for something that didn't even exist here in the U.S. until 1998.
Because of global warming their mating season which is in the early spring is increasing. So the populations of stinkbugs are increasing. That's when natural selection kicks in. The strongest stink bugs with the most immunities will survive and reproduce. now there's a large population of stink bugs that are difficult to kill even most insecticides won't do the trick. And since they're from Asia there's no natural predator here that can mainly consumer them. That's why they are becoming a problem in the usa.
I just made two of these. I found the lights at Dollar General - Rayovac brand LED lights for $5.50 including the AAA batteries. I also have to say that they can escape - they fly and land where you screw the bottle top on (threaded area) and then go inside and come out. They can also live a long time in the bottle before they die... Any ideas on how to get them NOT to escape?
Does this works with ladybugs also? It's winter time and I'm finding them 1-2 everyday in my bedroom, soooo does it works only on stink bugs or normal ladybugs aswell? Or I should search for new apartment to rent? 🤔😅

I just pulled jeans out of my dresser and about 6 fell out on the floor. Shook them, a few more fell out. Put them on, still had some on the inside! Freaked, pulled a fresh pair, more stinkbugs. WTF!!! I just did laundry 2 days ago and they all seem to be getting into my dresser and clothes!!!! Losing my mind, hate these things! If they like light, wth are they all in the top drawer of my dresser?! My place is tiny and I keep it very clean because it's the size of a shoebox and gets cluttered easily. I'm bleaching floors, walls, dresser (inside & out), window sills, they keep leaving their smell everywhere. I wanna puke. One landed in my coffee yesterday and I ended up tasting the smell. PLEASE HELP! WW3 between my place and asian stinkbugs has begun! Im losing the battle, wanna win the war!
Happy Gilmore I tape my windows closed from September until November!! They leave a trail so once one gets in the rest will follow. Have sprayed them with Clorox Bathroom cleaner and they STILL LIVE!!! Just gotta be vigilant and kill every single one you see. Good luck
I never knew anything about stink bugs until we moved into our home going on 4 years ago. They are a pain in the @$$, but as stated kill each one you see. I need some type of preventive measures now though 🤔!
thanks for the tip. I have been looking all over for something good to work and looks like i found it. I was thinking of something like this myself. I have a stand up light in one bedroom. It has the plastic upside down cone on the top. The stink bugs goes to the light and drop in. They cant crawl out. Plus the light (60-75 watt bulb) cooks them pretty fast. But I dont have two of them lights, so I need something in my bedroom. I've never seen them this bad before. I have no idea how they get in
I talked to an exterminator and he said they get inside your walls. I guess the bugs go outdoors when the weather permits. I don't know, just thinking. ; )
Very nice! I'm going to try this and put on in my attic! Only issue I see is light will need to be removed to replace batteries all the time. I'm thinking of using part of LED strip and threading thru hole in the bottle and sealing it with caulk or hot glue. If you use waterproof LED strip, it can even be submerged into soapy water so bugs will drown in it.
Pshhh,MY way is "simple" ALSO,and didn't cost ME a dime! While watching my flat-screen Tv in the evenings (the rest of the room is dark),Stinkbugs fly ONTO the screen as it's the only source of light in the room. Then I take a tiny clear plastic bag that's palm sized,with a ziplock closure at the end of it and I open the bag up with my fingers and carefully place it OVER the stinkbug on the screen,and take a business card to slide underneath the bag (to remove their legs from the flatscreen) and once they fall into the bag,I simply use the ziplock to close it,then stick the bag into the freezer which kills them in less than an hour,then take it out of the freezer,open the bag and throw their corpses onto the lawn where the Birds eat em! :)
I just started looking up bugs because one stinkbug climbed on me and got to my crotch, once I actually felt it I thought it was my underwear so i just tried to move it a bit but then i felt it and since i put pressure on it I smelled it (smelled like burned plastic) so i got it in my hands somehow then i panicked and threw it somewhere. I found it a few minutes later and just sprayed it with air freshener to kill it and get rid of the stink. It didn't kill it but it did help the stink and "freeze" it in one place. (I didn't know what it was but i knew it was immobilized) So now that it wasn't moving I took my old phone and started beating the thing until i knew it was dead. Then I took a tissue and threw it away. When I looked it up based on appearance (and the guess by the smell) and I figured out it was a stink bug so then I looked up if it was dangerous which thankfully it isn't (unless you're infested) I only had one that I know of but I eventually saw this video and it looked cool so I clicked it. I am not sure why I commented this and sorry if i wasted your time.

Hence the person whining about it costing 25 when you can make it for almost free if you have the stuff at home. ..there is a cost for convenience etc. I think it is a genius idea and nice for him to share the idea for freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. He could have thought it up and marketed it only. So be grateful.
I had too many for this last year. I bought the smallest shop vac from WM and extra filters, duct taped a mop handle to the end of the wand to extend it, and kept it on the porch. First day I did not count, but wow! Second day 4,231 bugs! Third day 6,113! My husband could not believe I counted them, but it’s boring just catching bugs all day otherwise. Each day got better. I could not stop, kept going from door to door to porch and pergola. Still finding them inside after winter though. Must empty into garbage bag carefully by sitting the vac inside bag, because the vac will not kill them! Also, plug the end with a gum band and a baggie when you take a break.
I appreciate three things from watching this video: 1. Seriously, how is this not on Shark Tank? 2: Almost PC way of telling people to suffocate them stank bugs to death. 3. "terrorists" is the only word for these bugs.
After watching this video, I watched Andrew Strube's video, "How to Catch Stink Bugs" and made some suggestions. Stink bugs are attracted to other stink bugs because of their scent, and you are not supposed to crush them. I don't think that we want our water to stink, so I don't think that it is a good idea to flush them in the toilet. I've heard some people say that they vacuum them up, but if they get agitated they spray their scent and it is expelled from the vacuum all over your home and they are attracted all the more. The best bet it to find out where they are coming in, i.e. the fire place, soffits of roof and cover holes with a mesh that they cannot fit into to keep them out. Otherwise, they are going to scent up your house and come back every year.
I agree w/ all of your points!! I've found out that flushing them works and I've yet to smell their disgusting smell yet. But there's always a chance that could change. I watched a video where a guy put a trap full of them in his freezer. I don't know...there was just something disturbing about the thought of putting them in there around my food and then them spraying before dying due to the stress of the cold air makes me sick. LOL.
It is that time of the year again where they fester in the attic and gain access through roof top nooks. crannies and chimneys. I usually capture them into a container...it is a fun game like being zapped in operation, you try not to be stinked by the bugs. I think capturing them and burying them in the yard is good...especially in areas where pests may be entering your property. I wouldn't suggest putting them in the toilet...don't want to be drinking stink water...we have enough problems with our drinking water as it is.
Thanks for the tip- somehow these stink f*+#€* found there way into my bedroom, only.. I've be catching, killing, and flushing about two a night. It makes sense it was always in pairs, I'd "get" one and within a few minutes there's a second. Its winter here, I think I'm allergic and I'm wondering do they go back outside when the weather changes?
Laura Pflug Laura, they aren't like ladybugs where the stink they make is the same as the attracting scent. When stinkbugs are clustered, they give off a 'come over here' scent to draw more to them so as to keep sheltered. It is a different smell than the stink smell they put out.

My 2 cents: I agree with using a second bottle to separate the light source from the capture chamber to make disposal easier. The other thing I would suggest is to use a fabric tape on the outside rather than a masking tape. Something like a medical tape would make it much easier for them to climb to their doom. I intend to make and test this tonight. Well thought out folks!

I made this trap to use on my screened in porch where the stink bugs seem to love to gather and tried it for 3 weeks, a few stink bugs went in it but there were still a lot hanging on the walls and screen then I read that stink bugs put off a scent that attracts other stink bugs so I parked my wet dry on the porch and each time I seen one I sucked it into the Vac and sealed the end of the nozzle just to make sure it wouldn't crawl out. (the vac has a bag in it) after 2 weeks I did not see another stink bug and it has been 3 months now. Seems if you can keep them from spraying their scent to attach other stink bugs you can get rid of them

I used leftover black grill spray paint to spray the side of the bottle, left a portion of bottom clear for the light to shine through. I used small pieces of poster tape (double sided adhesive tape) to glue the top funnel portion to the bottle base. I also used poster tape pieces on the sides of the bottle for the bugs to crawl up. I got a cheap $1 L.E.D. light from Walmart (in a bin with small flashlights and head lights you put on your head in the camping dept). I placed the L.E.D. light in the base of a dark small plant pot and placed the bug bottle inside the pot over the light (stabilizes the bottle and holds the light). The light can be turned on before placing the bottle over it and the light doesnt get ruined from bug crap, and you dont have to maneuver a pen in the bottle to turn it on. Cheaper alternatives

They do kill a lot of insects on most of our plants, but are not quite friendly on some, this topic is quite unsettling. If this bug benefits you than keep it going, and if it does not than eliminate them. I respect the way that you handle your live stock if you respect mine. Mann collect your stink bugs and sell or give them to whom values them. There.

I made several variations of this before I saw this video. I would quickly recommend that a piece of light cardboard be rolled around the bottom of the bottle instead of black tape and that it be long enough so that the light can be put UNDER it instead of inside it, this way you don't waste a light every time or play with the bugs to get the light back.
What also works is get a big pot that you can fill halfway with soapy water and hang a light over it, a blacklight works best. I used an old fish aquarium, wrapped it in aluminum foil, and put a blacklight in the hood. Trapped several hundred a week.

Just ran out to get the light. Found at the Dollar Tree for $1.00 each and they had an eight pack of batteries for $1.00. I will be trying it with these. It may work as well as the 6.00 light you mentioned. I hope so.

My 3rd grade class just made these for one of their final projects. Super easy! Several teachers will be testing out these traps as will our maintenance crew at our school. Excellent idea!

You can trap stink bugs outside by hanging a wet towel. Drape it over a chair or clothes line around dusk. In the morning, you should have a big collection. Just dunk the entire towel into a bucket of soapy water. This will not get rid of stink bugs completely but it will help to reduce their population. I have had major success using neem oil. I love it because it is 100% safe and natural. I have kids and dogs so I don't like to use harsh chemicals around my home. I spray it on plants and around my windows and doors. There is a video on my youtube channel about how to use it to eliminate stink bugs if anyone needs more information.

I've heard of folks using neem oil before with success, I'll have to try it. I have had success also with treating my window screen / sills with Denatured Alcohol as well. Trouble is that's a tab pricey and requires re-application for good effect. More frequent applications to start then maintenance as you see the need.

I wonder if this works with the harlequin stinkbug in Australia. I got their numbers down by raking up all the dry leaves under a spruce tree where they were wintering. I did it in the heat of summer so they scattered and died of exposure. Soapy water kills the infant's but I did notice that they love water, I have some plants that must be filled with water for the lilly to come and they segregate here. Thanks for your comment. JoJoZen: they say diatomaceous earth works well. Dust it on all your shrubs and the leaf litter--it adds calcium to the soil and dries out their exoskeletons.

just a sugestion for your idea use a double bottom on the bottle that slides onto the trap bottle to hold the light so it is removeable for battery replacement and to keep it clean i use a similar stile trap for japanese beetles a pile of them will stink horribly till you empty it

Great idea have you thought about just setting the light under the plastic and surrounding it with black tape so it's not inside the jar. Would that work?
I made one yesterday. Plugged it in about 4PM and checked this morning and there are about 8 bugs in there! IT WORKS!!! Less than 24 hrs and I'm catching alot of bugs. Let me add that we only saw about 1 bug a day on our wall so there are more in your house than you realize! They are good hiders!! I did buy a plug-in light though so I won't go thru alot of batteries. I just cut a "doggie door" type hole in the bottom to put the plug thru and taped it up really good. Thanks so much for this idea!

How about a minor improvement to even prevent them from climbing back up: rather than placing the light in the bottom of the Pepsi container, you place it UNDER the container.
Then you can put some water in the container, with a few drops of detergent to break the surface tension, then when they fall in, they will drown.
Similar to a wasp trap with the fluid on the bottom.

This is an excellent trap for these pesty stink bugs!! Here in NY in February, we still see them on a daily basis! The worst is when they get in the bed! 😩😵 They may be harmless but they are scary looking enough that my children and I prefer to remove them. Thanks for sharing this great tip!

I like these traps -- I have a few of them made. I made some minor changes with mine though -- I put water in the bottom of the bottle, along with dish soap. When they go down the funnel they hit the soapy water and die in about 5 minutes or so. It works very well at killing them, and it's safe. I put the light underneath the bottle and have the bottle rest on top of the light, so it still makes them want to fly inside. You don't have to use the soapy water though -- another good way to kill them is to put the entire trap in the freezer (once it's full...obviously!); they will be frozen & killed or slowed down enough to stop moving entirely in about 1-2 hours or so. Then dump and flush or dump them outside in a compost. Also -- these traps work very well when used "manually" as well, without the light. If you see a bug on the wall / window / ceiling, take the trap in your hands and try to get it around the bug and knock it down into the funnel. Once it's in there, it will not be able to get out. Works better than crushing them, most of the time they won't release the stink smell, but sometimes they will anyway, as just disturbing them can cause them to release it automatically -- they don't have to be crushed / killed instantly for them to release the stink...but most of the time I've found that using the funnel manually on a live one won't cause it to release the stink.
+surgeyX Nice! I had the same idea, I was thinking of somehow putting the light underneath the OUTSIDE of the trap, so that I could turn it on and off easier between night and day. I imagine these traps really work the best at night, but not really during the day, right? I plan to make a bunch and I don't want to have to disassemble each one every morning to shut off the light. With the light on the outside, the soapy water is another good idea. I couldn't find these lights at the local Home Depot (Lowe's had them though), so researched the suggested light on Amazon and it seems that the current version shuts off automatically after 30 minutes. No good! So I found these and will try them:

I'm thinking I can create some kind of base for the trap. Maybe a cardboard strip a little deeper than the light, to tape around the bottom of the bottle so I can tape the light to the outside bottom of the bottle and the trap won't have to balance on the light. In fact, using this method, I wouldn't even have to tape the light to the bottle. Then I can easily set the traps when it gets dark by turning them on and in the morning, I'll just shut the lights off to save batteries.
My house is infested with these damned bugs and now I also have an army of ladybugs in here too! They also seem to go for the lights, so I think these will make great dual stink bug/ladybug traps!

Yeah those are the same kind of lights I use (the first link) -- just make sure to get rechargeable AA batteries for it, as it will eat through standard batteries that can't be recharged in no time. Yeah that's pretty much how I do it, put cardboard or some kind of material to block the light on the side so they want to go to the top of the bottle, and the light only shines through the bottle. I live in Buffalo, kind of close -- they were here all summer, but as it's getting colder now, they seemed to have died down quite a bit...hopefully they're not resting in dim corners of my house / basement / attic and want to come out when it snows and I have the heat turned on, lol.

First thank you. I was thinking about the upgrade. If you take another bottle and cut it in two places to be just a roller. You add this roller from the bottom and you pierce for cord and wrap with the tape you can use the charger power in to put a pair of LEDs and an LED diode resistor. Then water can be placed in the bottom of the upper bottle. I wish you a nice day :)~
So I made kind of the same thing today. Except, I powered it with LEDs powered by a solar charger. I also used the bottom of another Pepsi bottle inverted to house the lighting so I didnt have to mix lighting and stink bugs, now they will be easy to dispose of. Wrapped it with tape of course. For the ladder I used mesh tape for drywall, they should easily be able to climb up there. Also lined the inside of the bottle with clear insecticide. Made this all with leftover stuff in my garage.

Great Idea, but they want more heat than the LED can provide. So I built the trap just like you described only I modified the bottom with a small candle bulb wired into the bottom. Puts off the heat they are looking for and seems to be working better than the LED. Im going to modify it again with a "Roof" of sorts and a mirror to reflect the light back inside to prevent them from going to the ceiling and looking down inside which seems to happen 50% of the time. -Thanks for the Great idea!

Disposal tip. After collecting a bunch of bugs, we stick the whole trap in the freezer for about 30 mins. This kills the bugs, or slows them do enough to easily empty into the toilet. This saved us from making new traps after throwing the bug filled traps away and from a melee of not dead bugs flying free in the bathroom when we tried to empty.

Great video on how to build a cheap Stink Bug Trap. Those pesky things have been around my property all year. Since winter is coming on, I know they will increasing want to come inside. He states that a good place to locate is in the attic. I'm also experimenting with yellow jacket traps.

Trust me, once you see a camelback cricket in your basement climbing on walls and jumping 20ft in the air, you will start having coffee and tea with stinkbugs.
You need to make a version with an easy to remove light attatched to the bottom instead of inside the actual trap, that you can plug in, so you won't have to worry about changing batteries and stuff, then you can also add some soapy water to the inside of the trap, so whatever bugs fall into it won't even be able to climb up the walls because it'll be all slippery. Probably would be less stinky too :P

So you are saying that the stink bugs cannot climb the plastic unless there is the masking tape so why did you explain that the stink bugs ( once inside ) will climb the inside of the trap ( without tape )?

Get the cheap Hydrogen Peroxide sprayers at Walmart. Dump the H2O2 and refill with 90% Isopropyl Alcohol. A squirt or two does them in in about 2 minutes. Instantly blinds them so they don't fly. I doesn't stain anything and evaporates quickly. They either don't squirt or the stuff neutralizes the smell. much better than squashing. It's actually fun, got a sprayer in almost every room.

I'm sure you've made modifications since this video, but how about seating the light inside a cardboard collar underneath the bottle a) it keeps the light shaded so they don't congregate underneath either the collar or the shaded taped area b) it allows you to turn out the light easily but mainly it allows you to drown the little buggers in the bottle, so ensuring they die quickly rather than slowly suffocating slowly,. Though I don't want to live with bugs I also don't want to torture them.
Yes, also it keeps you from having to touch the bugs to get the light out. Only thing is you have to shield the sides of the light so they just don't hang around outside the bottle.

But they're not going to any time soon. Conversely, their numbers are growing at crazy rates for something that didn't even exist here in the U.S. until 1998.
Because of global warming their mating season which is in the early spring is increasing. So the populations of stinkbugs are increasing. That's when natural selection kicks in. The strongest stink bugs with the most immunities will survive and reproduce. now there's a large population of stink bugs that are difficult to kill even most insecticides won't do the trick. And since they're from Asia there's no natural predator here that can mainly consumer them. That's why they are becoming a problem in the usa.
I just made two of these. I found the lights at Dollar General - Rayovac brand LED lights for $5.50 including the AAA batteries. I also have to say that they can escape - they fly and land where you screw the bottle top on (threaded area) and then go inside and come out. They can also live a long time in the bottle before they die... Any ideas on how to get them NOT to escape?

I don't think flushing them down the toilet is a very good idea, as an ex sewer inspector I can see how that could cause line plugging.

I just pulled jeans out of my dresser and about 6 fell out on the floor. Shook them, a few more fell out. Put them on, still had some on the inside! Freaked, pulled a fresh pair, more stinkbugs. WTF!!! I just did laundry 2 days ago and they all seem to be getting into my dresser and clothes!!!! Losing my mind, hate these things! If they like light, wth are they all in the top drawer of my dresser?! My place is tiny and I keep it very clean because it's the size of a shoebox and gets cluttered easily. I'm bleaching floors, walls, dresser (inside & out), window sills, they keep leaving their smell everywhere. I wanna puke. One landed in my coffee yesterday and I ended up tasting the smell. PLEASE HELP! WW3 between my place and asian stinkbugs has begun! Im losing the battle, wanna win the war!
Happy Gilmore I tape my windows closed from September until November!! They leave a trail so once one gets in the rest will follow. Have sprayed them with Clorox Bathroom cleaner and they STILL LIVE!!! Just gotta be vigilant and kill every single one you see. Good luck

It has the plastic upside down cone on the top. The stink bugs goes to the light and drop in. They cant crawl out. Plus the light (60-75 watt bulb) cooks them pretty fast. But I dont have two of them lights, so I need something in my bedroom. I've never seen them this bad before. I have no idea how they get in
I talked to an exterminator and he said they get inside your walls. I guess the bugs go outdoors when the weather permits. I don't know, just thinking. ; )

Very nice! I'm going to try this and put on in my attic! Only issue I see is light will need to be removed to replace batteries all the time. I'm thinking of using part of LED strip and threading thru hole in the bottle and sealing it with caulk or hot glue. If you use waterproof LED strip, it can even be submerged into soapy water so bugs will drown in it.
Pshhh,MY way is "simple" ALSO,and didn't cost ME a dime! While watching my flat-screen Tv in the evenings (the rest of the room is dark),Stinkbugs fly ONTO the screen as it's the only source of light in the room. Then I take a tiny clear plastic bag that's palm sized,with a ziplock closure at the end of it and I open the bag up with my fingers and carefully place it OVER the stinkbug on the screen,and take a business card to slide underneath the bag (to remove their legs from the flatscreen) and once they fall into the bag,I simply use the ziplock to close it,then stick the bag into the freezer which kills them in less than an hour,then take it out of the freezer,open the bag and throw their corpses onto the lawn where the Birds eat em! :)

I just started looking up bugs because one stinkbug climbed on me and got to my crotch, once I actually felt it I thought it was my underwear so i just tried to move it a bit but then i felt it and since i put pressure on it I smelled it (smelled like burned plastic) so i got it in my hands somehow then i panicked and threw it somewhere. I found it a few minutes later and just sprayed it with air freshener to kill it and get rid of the stink. It didn't kill it but it did help the stink and "freeze" it in one place. (I didn't know what it was but i knew it was immobilized) So now that it wasn't moving I took my old phone and started beating the thing until i knew it was dead. Then I took a tissue and threw it away.
When I looked it up based on appearance (and the guess by the smell) and I figured out it was a stink bug so then I looked up if it was dangerous which thankfully it isn't (unless you're infested)

+JustSomeGuy yea well not everyone is so bright. Hence the person whining about it costing 25 when you can make it for almost free if you have the stuff at home. ..there is a cost for convenience etc. I think it is a genius idea and nice for him to share the idea for freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. He could have thought it up and marketed it only. So be grateful.
would it increase the efficiency of the trap to also put some food bait in the trap as well? Such as some apple slices or orange peelings?

I had too many for this last year. I bought the smallest shop vac from WM and extra filters, duct taped a mop handle to the end of the wand to extend it, and kept it on the porch. First day I did not count, but wow! Second day 4,231 bugs! Third day 6,113! My husband could not believe I counted them, but it’s boring just catching bugs all day otherwise. Each day got better. I could not stop, kept going from door to door to porch and pergola. Still finding them inside after winter though. Must empty into garbage bag carefully by sitting the vac inside bag, because the vac will not kill them! Also, plug the end with a gum band and a baggie when you take a break.

I appreciate three things from watching this video:
1. Seriously, how is this not on Shark Tank?
2: Almost PC way of telling people to suffocate them stank bugs to death.

After watching this video, I watched Andrew Strube's video, "How to Catch Stink Bugs" and made some suggestions. Stink bugs are attracted to other stink bugs because of their scent, and you are not supposed to crush them. I don't think that we want our water to stink, so I don't think that it is a good idea to flush them in the toilet. I've heard some people say that they vacuum them up, but if they get agitated they spray their scent and it is expelled from the vacuum all over your home and they are attracted all the more. The best bet it to find out where they are coming in, i.e. the fire place, soffits of roof and cover holes with a mesh that they cannot fit into to keep them out. Otherwise, they are going to scent up your house and come back every year.
I agree w/ all of your points!! I've found out that flushing them works and I've yet to smell their disgusting smell yet. But there's always a chance that could change.
I watched a video where a guy put a trap full of them in his freezer. I don't know...there was just something disturbing about the thought of putting them in there around my food and then them spraying before dying due to the stress of the cold air makes me sick. LOL.
It is that time of the year again where they fester in the attic and gain access through roof top nooks. crannies and chimneys. I usually capture them into a container...it is a fun game like being zapped in operation, you try not to be stinked by the bugs. I think capturing them and burying them in the yard is good...especially in areas where pests may be entering your property. I wouldn't suggest putting them in the toilet...don't want to be drinking stink water...we have enough problems with our drinking water as it is.
Thanks for the tip- somehow these stink f*+#€* found there way into my bedroom, only.. I've be catching, killing, and flushing about two a night. It makes sense it was always in pairs, I'd "get" one and within a few minutes there's a second. Its winter here, I think I'm allergic and I'm wondering do they go back outside when the weather changes?
Talk to someone who works at the water plant in your town. A few stink bugs is the least of the worries about what gets flushed.
Laura Pflug Laura, they aren't like ladybugs where the stink they make is the same as the attracting scent. When stinkbugs are clustered, they give off a 'come over here' scent to draw more to them so as to keep sheltered. It is a different smell than the stink smell they put out.
